Question about sponsoring

LJ-SEC: (ORIGINALLY POSTED BY [info]thedemonprist)

So I'm having a bit of good fortune here lately, what with landing a new job. And I thought, you know what they say about good fortune, that it ought to be shared if possible. So I was wondering about one of those overseas sponsorship programs, the kind where you send in a bit of money and it covers a child's expenses (like schooling, or medical, or even all of 'em) for one year (or more), and maybe they even encourage a pen-pal correspondence between you and the person you're sponsoring. But the thing is, I know that many such organizations are religious-influenced, and while I don't have any problem with that per se, I'm very leery of sending my hard-earned money (seriously - before I had this job I was literally stone-broke without a single penny to my name) to an organization that's just going to use it for shoveling a particular Doctrine and Dogma down a kid's throat, if you know what I mean. (And I don't care what religion it is, if it's being force-fed to someone - especially if it's meant to inspire hatred and encourage persecution of others who are Not Your Kind - it's wrong.)

I was wondering if anyone knew of any particular sponsorship programs, religious-based or not, that are really good for donating to.
