Whenever I’m alone with you You make me feel like I am home again Whenever I’m alone with you You make me feel like I am whole again He stood at the window in his office at the estate, staring out over the snow-covered grounds. The reports he was supposed to be going over were sitting on his desk, forgotten. Although a fire crackled in the hearth, he felt cold. He raked a hand through his short brown hair, closing his eyes to try to shut out the images that played in front of him, but they were still there on the insides of his eyelids. Her vivid red hair, beautiful blue eyes. Her smile. Her laughter rang in his ears, and he could hum the opening of Beethoven’s Moonlight sonata and see her sitting at the piano, her nimble fingers flying over the keys. Turning, he fixed his eyes on the bottle of scotch that sat in the corner. It shouldn’t be in here, the maids had been instructed to remove all alcohol from his rooms. Just looking at the bottle brought back memories of its own. The burning sensation as he swallowed a mouthful. The blissful numbness it brought with it. Shaking his head, he turned back to the window. No more scotch. He hadn’t touched it in over a year. One year, two months, and nine days, to be exact. It was hard sometimes. He idly rubbed the scar on the side of his hand. It had faded over time, but it was still there. It had taken two dozen stitches to close up his hand. His sister had ripped into him for that one, demanded he get help. Therapy had helped a lot, though he felt like he would never be whole again. Not without her. Whenever I’m alone with you You make me feel like I am young again Whenever I’m alone with you You make me feel like I am fun again Seeing her with their daughter. Leaving them again. It had killed him. Knowing that she was there, but he couldn’t be with her, that he couldn’t just hold her in his arms. He wanted to die. He wanted her out of his head. He couldn’t live without her. She was his world, his life. And like an idiot he couldn’t ever seem to hold on to her. She was the love of his life. His “The One.” However far away, I will always love you However long I stay, I will always love you Whatever words I say, I will always love you I will always love you He brought his hands up to the cool glass in front of him, then leaned his head forward until he could rest his forehead on the windowpane, as well. Eyes closed, he remembered. Her soft lips on his, the feel of her hand in his. How well they fit together, despite their height difference. Their bodies entwined, so close that it was impossible to tell where he ended and she began. His fingers curled against the glass as a tear slipped out of his eye and down his cheek. God he missed her so much. She was halfway around the world, but it might as well have been hundreds of thousands of miles, instead of only five thousand. Unwillingly, he turned again, eyes opening to look at the scotch. No. He was strong. He didn’t need it anymore. It was never the scotch that he had needed. He forced himself to look away from the scotch. He should call for a maid to get it out of here. But not now, he didn’t want to be disturbed. As much as they hurt, his memories of her were too precious and he loved them. Whenever I’m alone with you You make me feel like I am free again Whenever I’m alone with you You make me feel like I am clean again Their moonlight picnic and swim. The waterfall. He had been so sure that it would be romantic, wonderful. He’d told her for the first time that he loved her. And then she slipped and fell. His stomach had turned into a lead ball and all the blood rushed out of his head as he dove in after her. Cradling her in his arms in the water, praying to anyone who would listen for her to be okay. Her waking up in the hospital without her sight. All the changes that brought, but he’d been there for her. He still loved her, even if she couldn’t see. Then the discovery that her vision was returning. Shopping for a ring with his sister and her brother. Taking her out to a romantic dinner, bumbling his way through what was supposed to be a romantic proposal, and presenting her with the ring. She said yes. But then she left him on their wedding day. Heartbroken and dead inside, he left. Their child was born only months later, and he couldn’t be there for her. He didn’t even see them again until their daughter was eight months old. But the love was still there, it had never really died. However far away, I will always love you However long I stay, I will always love you Whatever words I say, I will always love you I will always love you He would always love her. She had his heart, wholly and completely. He was only whole when he was with her. With her, he was home. |
