It had been a little over a month. A month since she'd been in that warehouse with her wand set on Elle Spinnet and Trenton Bambar. A month since she watched Bambar throw the potion and heard Elle's reaction cry for him to stop but was too late. A month since she'd been witnessed someone dying while on the job. Susan was no stranger to death. Most of her family had been tragically killed in the wizarding wars. She grew up admiring all of her family that had been killed in the first war and grieved her aunt and the others she knew more personally that were killed during the second. She would always remember the Battle of Hogwarts as long as she lived. Yes, Susan was used to death; she just hadn't been witness to it when it was her job to help prevent it.
Logically, she knew in her head there'd been nothing else she could do to prevent what happened, but it wasn't as easy to truly believe it. One small change and maybe Elle Spinnet's daughter wouldn't grow up without a mother. Even if that mother had been destined for prison, she'd still be alive.
Most days it was easy to go on with her daily activities. Once she'd been cleared to go back to work, she made sure to keep busy. Susan was always great at keeping busy in order to distract herself from something she wasn't ready to deal with just yet. She could have even said she had a fairly good week so far when a couple of news headlines caught her eye while heading home for the day. It was an update on the case against Bambar with a picture of both him and Elle Spinnet plastered on the front page.
Forgoing her flat, Susan ended up at the Squealing Snitch. She'd never been much of a drinker, but after a couple rounds, she was starting to feel a lot better. Lighter. She shared a few laughs with a couple other aurors who had stopped in for the night but after a while left to go home to their families. Susan stayed on and had another drink. With some help from the effects of the alcohol, she sent a few texts to a friend about what she was up to for the night.
"Your best pink drink, please!" She called out to the bartender. While she was waiting for the drink to be served up (because obviously that was enough instruction for a proper drink, right?), she spotted a group over by the pool tables.
"OOH!" said Susan, clapping her hands as she bounded over. "Can I play?? And can I be the yellow ball?" Without thinking, she picked up the solid yellow ball and smiled. "Number one. Does that mean I go first?"
Luckily for Susan, the group wasn't taken aback by her interjection into their game and started another game with teams this time. Pink drink now in hand, she smiled brightly at the wizard standing next to her who happened to be on the opposing team. Bearded Bloke, she called him for most of the game.
It wasn't long before her worries of the day were completely out of her mind. See? Distractions did work.
