Why is there a drunken Sully on the steps leading up to Tim's apartment?

Yeah, you were a big influence on that, not being one. I mean I drink, but with you and Momma and Pops... I never did it in access or depended on it.

And right there you are automatically smarter than I am. I spent years watching my father drink himself into a stupor and become a total ass hat in the process and yet, I still became an alcoholic.

I think that's probably why... I didn't watch you and Momma or anybody else do all that. You were exposed to it a lot.

You'd think the bad example would render it an undesirable way to live.

You'd be surprised what bad stuff we see, that we end up doing.

Kind of weird how it works out that way.

Either way, you're a good kid and I'm really glad about that. This guy better treat you right or he's not just going to have your mom to worry about.

It is a little. And sometimes it works out the opposite. I mean I know my biological Dad, turned out kind of the opposite of his old man.

Well, I wouldn't want anything to happen to him if he did, though. I mean, just because he hurts my feelings doesn't mean he should get beat up for it.

Is that a good thing?

Hurting your feelings is one thing. Breaking your heart is another. And you'd be amazed what people can live through.

Yeah, from what I can figure. I... didn't have a whole lot of experience with him. But I watched that show he was from.

No, I don't want TJ hurt no matter what happens to me. Okay? I'm going to tell Momma the same thing. I don't care what he does.

I knew him a little bit when he was here. He was a good man.

You care about him that much, huh?

He was pretty brave.

It's not about me caring about him, it's about me caring about all of ya'll. But yeah, I'm out to help him. Not get him hurt.

You get that from him, you know? Not just from your mom.

Alright, I promise to limit myself to a lot of yelling and threatening. How's that?

Being brave? I'm not brave.

Well... We'll see it depends on what the offence is.

How can you say you're not brave, kid? There are a lot of different kinds of brave.

How about this? If he does hurt you, which we're both hoping he doesn't, I'll ask you what you want me to do before doing anything.

Because when you're brave you do things, I haven't really had to ever realy do anything that proved that I was brave.

I like that. I hope everybody else thinks about asking me first.

I'll make sure they do.

Alright, let me put it this way. Willingly put yourself out there for someone like him. Being there for an addict, especially this early into sobriety. That, my dear boy, takes bravery.

I don't know. It just seems like something anybody would do really. That's not really bravery is it?
