If a scream of horror was enough to stop war, there would be no more war.

Given what we know about mankind, is it even wise to have children?

No matter how many books you read, no matter how much you live, there are some things in this world that you will never, ever understand. And perhaps you wouldn't want to.

This island is a prison. And my mind is one.

Ah, I see. I suppose my parents were fairly conservative. But I feel like I have to write the way that people actually talk, otherwise it comes across as unnatural. And as much as publishers would like me to star words out- well, they can go to hell.

Jesus, you're getting far too much enjoyment out of this shit.

Next time I see you, I'm going to come up and curse as much as I can improvise right to your face. Onlookers will wonder what the fuck is going on, but you'll know.

I wish I were that brave. I can't say damn without blushing like a child.

Now you're doing this on purpose, aren't you? I see through that genius level intellect persona of yours, Mr Hemingway. You just like seeing a girl squirm.

I think it's all mind over matter. They're words, they're words that people use daily- who decided they were bad? And why? Context is everything. As humans, we assign positive or negatives attributes to everything, and then forget we did it, and think that things have some sort of inherent goodness or badness in them. They don't. Only we thought of them that way. Does that make sense?

Yes, I am. You caught me.

But there are multiple contexts to the words, yes? An infinite amount. So if I were to say 'fuck you', there are many different permutations of that phrase. Which one is worse than the other? It's like the Chatterley trials for indecency; using the word 'fuck' in its original context and meaning. Should that be censored?

It's working, by the way. I'm bright pink all over.

Yes, that is what I mean, context is everything. There is a difference between swearing at someone, and just- having it in your vocabulary. Plus, I can think of many things that would offend me more than someone saying 'fuck you'. But I'm aware that it is subjective, and don't seek to censor an entire population based on my own sensitivities. And whether or not it's 'nice' to curse at someone or not- it still happens, so I still write it. War isn't pleasant. Disease. Death. Injustice. But they don't ask for it to be censored. Is a simple word so much worse?

Oh, how delightful!

My English Professor once told us that censorship was stifling truth in creativity. That, in order to be a great writer, you have to be brutally honest with language and images and the tones that you create. The world is one of excess and violence and pain as much as love, happiness and friendship. Daisies grow through cracks in the cement.

I'm glad you think so.

Wise words, indeed. It sounds as though you have had a good teacher, which can be invaluable. I'm glad that not every school seeks to stifle any sort of individuality etc.

Some of the world's most beautiful offerings are also disgusting. Childbirth- bloody, messy, screaming, agony, and fucking miraculous, and it is a disservice to it's beauty to miss out all of the horrible bits. They are part of a whole.

I had a very good teacher although my favourite teacher I have yet to meet in person. He's taught me more than my professors ever did and I'm proud to call him my influence.

Oh gosh, don't talk to me about that. The whole pregnancy thing just weirds me out completely. It's a person growing inside you. So weird.

Well, meeting people you admire can be such a disappointment.

It probably would terrify me more if I were anatomically capable of bearing children. But having witnessed it first hand a few weeks ago- it is beyond fucked up. No wonder I never made it in the medical field!

I guess you're right. Silly idea.

You have a little girl, yes? How's the Dad life treating you?

No, no, not silly. Just- overrated. Is it even possible now? Is the person on the island?

Yes, that's right. Patricia. It's fine. I was a father, already. My son, Jack, is also on the island.

Yes, yes he is.

Congratulations on your new baby then. I hope your little boy doesn't get too jealous.

Then be brave. Just ask.

Thank you. He is a good-natured child, he doesn't seem to be too upset at the moment. He has never been spoiled.

You told me to so this is your fault: Mr Hemingway, would it be possible to meet you and pick your wonderful brain?

Too many children are spoiled these days.

Ah! I think I'm going to have to retract the 'genius' statement for being so slow on the uptake. Yes, of course. Where would you like to go? I'll try not to be a crushing disappointment.

It seems that way, yes.

Anywhere you're most comfortable. It's not often a person has the opportunity to talk to their literary idol.
