Here's a thought. And you can all complain to me if you think I'm wrong but I'm going to share it anyone.

How about the only people that get to say anything about the community are the ones that actually contribute to it? Just a suggestion.

Since there was a misunderstanding of what I meant, I'll clarify.

I am not in any way trying to tell people what they can and can not think or say. I am simply asking that if you don't, in some small way, contribute to the community you really shouldn't complain about how things are. Yes, it is your right to do so, but if you don't try to change things, all you're doing is complaining. And also that maybe it would be nice to consider other people's feelings before calling them names in an open forum. And that, if you insist on insulting people, you put it under a filter so that only those that wish to read what you've written have to see it. That's all.

Ah, so we don't have freedom of speech here anymore? Interesting.

People contribute in different ways, and I think we should try to be less condemning and more accepting.

I do understand that people contribute in different ways. I just think that if your only contribution is to be condescending and rude, you should keep it to yourself.

There have been a lot of situations in which I wanted to say something but I kept myself from it because I knew that it would be taken the wrong way. And the times that I haven't kept myself from it, there was a horrible backlash that I severely regret.

All I'm saying is that people who don't contribute shouldn't complain about the way things are. It's like in America when people who didn't vote would then complain about the elected leaders. If you're not part of the community, you have no say in what happens.

Right, and maybe they shouldn't complain.

But they still have the right to. That's part of what being free is. Other people can't tell you to shut up because they disagree with you. You don't pay for your freedom of speech with the work you do, it's a right that's yours no matter what.

So you would be perfectly okay if I started posting every single complaint that I have on the network every time I felt like it?

I wouldn't have to read it, would I?

Ah, but you see, it would be open and there for everyone to see. And how many times have you passed up an open post of which you didn't like the content? Like this one for example. You didn't have to read it but you did. And you decided to comment. So when things are put out there for everyone to see, it's nature to read it. It happens.

Sometimes, though, I think certain people on this island complain or make comments in open forums strictly for the attention it gets them. And yes, I get that you are probably thinking I'm a hypocrite right now, but I don't deny that I have made a couple of posts on the network just to get a bit of attention. I'm not going to lie. But I have never openly and publicly insulted someone in a post unless they insulted me or someone I love first. I have never come out and called someone names just because I felt like it and wanted to stir the pot, so to speak. Most of the posts that I make to get attention are silly and ridiculous and if they make fun of anyone, they make fun of me.

The point is, sir, that you don't have the right to control what someone says or thinks. It's not your place. You don't have to like it - I don't like a lot of the things I read. But it's not your right to tell them to stop.

If you don't like what people post, tell them. That's your right too.

You're trying to qualify their right to say it.

I quite often got told that I shouldn't be allowed to have opinions on certain things because I sat up there in my "tower" and looked down on the little people.

Is it so wrong to ask that someone be a part of the community in some way before badmouthing it?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]ourloveburnsus
2013-07-09 01:47 am UTC (link)
Yes.

Because, as I just said, you're trying to qualify their right to express themselves based on spurious qualifications.

[info]aedwardstark

How are they spurious qualifications? All I'm asking is that they be a part of the community in some way. And so far the person that has been badmouthing the community doesn't live anywhere near the city and thinks we're all lesser beings because we're simply human. I'm sorry that I find that a little wrong.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Because the right to free speech is absolute. It's a human right. The right to expression. The right to be the person you are.

And it is not your place to qualify that in any way.

[info]aedwardstark
2013-07-09 01:53 am UTC (link)
Ah, but you see, the one causing the problem isn't even human. And he's not the only non human that acts the same way. So by saying it's a human right, you only prove my point, not dispute it.

Okay, so I will start sharing my opinion of each and every person on this island whether it actually effects me in any way simply because I have the right to do so.

I don't know what you're talking about. Elodin is as human as everyone else.

If that's what you want to do, then do it. It's your popularity at stake, and I'm not going to tell you that you can't.

But you admit that venting your frustrations to an open network has a negative effect on the community. So you've only proven my point further. Have a nice day.

I said nothing of the sort. Perhaps you should read a bit closer?

I said that it could have personal ramifications to you, not to the community. You have no point.

It must be nice in your little world. I hope you enjoy it there. Because it seems that in your world you can't understand that me losing my popularity means making people angry with me. That, in and of itself, has an effect on the community. Or maybe I'm the only one that sees it that way.

I think I'm done talking to you now because if I don't stop now, I'll end up wasting a whole bunch of time saying the same things over and over and over again.

Strange, that's exactly how I feel.

Let me put it in smaller words, that maybe your brain will understand.

So today we say that Elodin can't speak his opinions to the network because we don't like them. Because Tony Stark thinks that it hurts "community." Well, how about tomorrow we say that Person X can't post to the network because, oh, I don't know, Tony Stark happens to disagree with them about their choice of football team. Then so and so can't post because their opinion on childbirth hurts the "community." Then, after a year or so, I suppose that Tony Stark will be in charge of the stasi. Doesn't that sound fun?

Hey the door to Texas is still open, we can stuff tube socks in mouths and ducttape fingers.

People should remember that there are still countries that cut out tongues for things that are said. Not everywhere is free speech. And even though here might be, it wont save them from an ass kicking later.

That is very true. I was trapped in a cave for four months with a group of people that didn't believe in free speech. Hell, the ring leader killed one of his henchmen just because the guy made me do his laundry.

I don't wish to torture anyone innocent. And the people we're talking about are far from. They would fit right in with any mutant hating bastard that you've ever come across.

And while they don't do anything productive, at all, for the community, they would like to stick anyone not like them in pens and mark them with numbers. Tony and I have simply had our fill of it. I don't know about you Mister Lensherr, but I'm not going to sit still and let no one hold me up in a cage like an animal while they poke and prod me till they get bored, without issuing one hell of an ass whoopin' everytime they try.
