Scott is dead. Perhaps one of the doctors would like to come out and take a look, I know he was receiving his vaccinations with myself, and it is possible that he had a bad reaction. I'm not certain.

He was a hypochondriac, so when he tells you he's dying you scarcely bat an eyelid. How foolish I was. I should have had more patience with him. I thought he was being dramatic again. He was always saying he was dying, and nothing ever came of it before.

There is little point in dwelling on it. I have been to the bookshop, and his novels are still there. Some of which he is yet to write, so I can only assume that he has gone home to publish them. Death is nothing to fear, after all. Pity the living, not the dead.

I am not a religious man. I don't believe that any God exists in order to give as he takes away. All I can say with certainty is that whatever power is behind this island has a peculiar sense of humour. As they take Scott from me, they offer me this little creature.

He's not impressed, can you tell?

Aw! That's your son, is it? I mean, not that I think anyone would blame you for taking a random child off the street and claiming it as your own, given the-- nature of the Reader of this island...

But your little boy is utterly adorable, by the by...! How old is he, do you know, now?

Yes, he's my son. I appreciate that, but I must admit that I am not so selfless and caring as to just claim a random child as my own. It's different, since he's mine. Of course.

Thank you. I suppose they all are at that age, but he's really very cute and cuddly, like a teddy bear. Oh, he'll be three in October. Or, he would have been at home. I'll assume the same to save confusing matters. He looks just the same as he did.

Oh of COURSE! I mean, I think I'd only consider taking in a kid who isn't really mine own, is to make a filling of a sort, for my otherwise empty life. Which isn't really that empty of late...!

But all the same, Mister Hemingway, if you ever get sick of your little boy cuddling up to you, or merely want your have your hands free to Write - well, just send him off to me rather! I certainly wouldn't mind looking after the little tyke...!

Yes, certainly. There are always some selfish motivations to even the most seemingly selfless act, even if we don't realise it ourselves except in retrospect. I'm glad that your life is not empty. I fear mine would have been, having lost Scott, if not for the arrival of my son.

That's very kind of you, and I will likely take you up on that offer. He has never had a babysitter before, there was never any need in Paris. So I'm not sure how he would take to it, as good-natured as he is. Would you perhaps like to meet the little fellow in my company? Then you will not be a stranger to him.

Indeed, sir...! You know, I think I am going to have to track down your novels here, because you truly have a gift with looking into human nature, and of course, with words, too!

And I'd love to meet the little tyke... Though I have to wonder why there was never any need for a babysitter in Paris! I mean, was your wife not quite as impressed with "gay old Paree" as you were...?

Thank you, I appreciate that. I hope that I don't disappoint in my fiction. The Torrents of Spring is something that I wrote in only ten days, it's is something of a joke intended to break a publishing contract without actually breaking it. I consider The Sun Also Rises to by my actual first novel. I'm currently working on something else, although it is already available in the bookshops here- and many others that I won't write for a few decades. It boggles the mind. Anyway, you can let me know what you think, if you do get around to it.

Wonderful! Well, there weren't really any. If you were rich, you could hire a nanny, but we could hardly afford to buy wood for the fire. My wife was often home, but when she wasn't, we had a cat. A very loving and protective cat, that would keep the baby warm and not let anyone go near the boy or any harm come to him. It was more trustworthy than any nanny, any day.

Indeed, sir? Because I actually already picked up the first one you mentioned simply because it intrigued me, being the shortest of your works, and with the longest subtitle... Ha! So I suppose I'll be reading your little "joke" first off...?

At any rate, well, I'd be glad to come over any time to meet the boy, so long as he doesn't act like the kitty-cat who babysat him in his infancy! (Haha! No, really, that cat sounds rather sweet, and I'm sure you couldn't have paid for a better nanny or au pair!)

	Well, maybe you'll enjoy it! My wife hated it, but Scott Fitzgerald thinks it's a masterpiece, so- it's a matter of personal opinion I suppose. Enjoy! Oh, wonderful. No, no, he doesn't hiss and scratch, fortunately. Wouldn't have been much good bringing him up feral, would it? Yes, it was a terribly sweet cat, I have a certain fondness for them anyway.
