"How nice - to feel nothing, and still get full credit for being alive."

~Vonnegut; Slaughterhouse-Five

So there is a bookstore. I love books, I especially love the self-help books in this particular place. Though I must say, my imagination has always served me up with the -- ah, shall we say, finest forms of assistance?

Mm.

I found a copy of Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle which I'm keeping, and Slaughterhouse-Five which I'm reading. I also found a few volumes of Iron Man comic books, which I've taken all the copies of and hidden.

I mean, he is immortal.

That's fairly special.

I think that withered dead body at the end of his book says otherwise.

He's still more immortal than most.

Whilst this is certainly true, I don't hear any of the rest of them shouting about their origins and believing that makes them better than the rest of us.

If that's what he were saying, then you'd have every right to get smart with him. But that wasn't really what he said. Someone who was being a dick asked Dorian, "What makes you so special?" So he responded with a list. He wasn't bragging -- or he didn't interject to do so -- he was answering a question. In... typical Wildian form.

Ultimately, he was just trying to explain why it was that he dealt with a specific situation in the way that he did.

Well actually he answered 'what makes you so special?' with 'I'm Oscar Wilde's Magnum opus.' And then went on to claim that anyone who didn't agree that his book was a literary masterpiece was illiterate.

I'm sorry, I must have misinterpreted that as bragging.

Back to my main point, though, it doesn't make him any better than the rest of us. He's still a character from a book. Dorian fucking Grey or not.

It's Gray with an A, not an E -- I'm not Fifty Shades of anyone's bullshit.

Well, it's not his book. It's Oscar Wilde's book. And the book is a literary masterpiece. You don't have to like it, but you can't really argue that it isn't one of the most important novels of its day. That it didn't shape an genre, and influence generations of writers that followed. It's 34 on the Guardian's list of the Greatest Novels of All Time, and it often features on other such lists. You don't have to like it, but to deny that it's an important literary achievement and, in fact, Oscar Wilde's seminal work, is simply incorrect.

And truthfully, the things he listed weren't even things that he himself accomplished. If anything, he was talking up Oscar Wilde.

He didn't say that he was any better than the rest of us. He just told you what made him worthwhile in his own right. You can't infer a comparison where one wasn't made.

I didn't deny that it was an important literary achievement. I just said that I, personally, found it boring, and that I, personally, preferred the plays. That's very different.

And that's fine. You don't have to like it. You're free to prefer the plays. But that doesn't make anything Dorian said incorrect. You could argue that the way it was worded seemed arrogant, but ultimately, the person he was talking up was Oscar Wilde, not Dorian Gray.

I didn't say he was incorrect. Or arrogant. Eames did. I don't really give a fuck if he thinks he's special or not. Or if he's arrogant. Whatever, I'm arrogant.

...if I don't want to try and kill you I shouldn't talk to you?

Either that or you're implying that I've somehow come out on the bottom- which is inaccurate.
