This place.

I've done my best to attempt to understand what this island is and what it was that I did here before, and I'm left perhaps feeling much more confused that I was when I started. But I imagine, as important as the past may be, there is no reason to get lost in it at least, not here, where everything is so unfamiliar. It is the present, as unknown as she is, where I must focus my efforts, and on the people here who are as lost as I am.

With that in mind, and with respect -- I pose the question: Why do you, any of you, think we're here?

They is it a second chance. A second chance at what I don't know, or care. For those of us not looking for one it's a trap.

Are you looking for a second chance?

No, of course not. I enjoyed my life the way it was, compared to what I have learned and done here.

Shouldn't you then think that this is all some kind of punishment?

For what? What have I done in my life to earn it? Live in peace? Offer sanctuary to people who had none?

Valar, are the Noldor not punished enough already? How is it paradise for some and punishment for others?

If you're in no need of a second chance -- if this is a trap for you, must it not be punishment?

It is punishment but I do not understand why or what I have done to deserve it.

Or what my son has done, or his father. There is no reason for it to be this way.

There are plenty who suffer who've done nothing to earn it.

We're here to learn something. We've been brought so that we might understand. What it is, precisely, is a question only time and trial can answer.

I imagine it might be unique to all of us. I can't imagine that what we are to learn is the same.

I'm not so certain. Every man has his own failings, to be sure, but in the end the goal we strive for - that any higher power ordains - is the same.

No; we have principles, which are close enough to facts to serve the purpose. We always begin with those.

At least for me, being here, no matter how strange it might be, is like a dream come true.

A little more than six months, sir. Many strange things have happened, but every place has its strangeness, and this place is...kind, for the most part.

Yeah, airplanes, they're uh...they're kind of like big, metal things that you fly above the clouds. This one was was being used in a war and the only way I could stop it from killing millions was to take it down in an ocean.

I like to think that if they knew doing so would save an entire country and protect the world from an oppressive, racist leader most men would have done the same.
