This sure beats the weather in New York City and it definitely beats prison.

I guess most people must introduce themselves when they show up here, don't then? I ...well I would, you know, but... I don't know who any of you are. Names are too precious to just give away.

And which war might that be?

Did you come here from the front?

Kind of? I was on my way to tell some friends of mine that the German Army just surrendered and then I was here. We were occupying Eagle's Nest at the time.

At least you were bringing good news. And you're all right? I know war can be difficult.

I've had some close calls but nothing serious. I've lost a lot of good men either badly wounded or outright KIA over the last twelve months.

I'm not sure what's going to happen next, for all I know they could ship the Division over to the Pacific for the invasion of Japan.

You should enjoy your time here, you've certainly earned the rest.

Thanks.

So you've had me talking about myself for a while now, what's your story?

Me? I'm just an artist from London. I went to University in Dublin, studied Math. That's about all there is to me.

I've been to London several times on leave back before D-Day. Its a wonderful city.

University in Dublin huh? The university I went to in the States is pretty old for us but I'd imagine yours has Franklin and Marshall College beat by a few centuries years.

So how does someone who studied Math wind up an artist? And what sort of art do you make?

I really hope you get to see London again, she's much better when she's not under fear of air raids, I promise. Trinity was Est. in 1592 -- so I think it may have you beat, but that's all right. It's just the building thats old, if they minds were, they'd never be any use to anyone, would they?

How much do you know about Pure mathematics, speculative mathematics? It's a bit like theoretical physics, not about ...ah, how things work, but about how that which we don't understand... might? That's what I did...

and then I became a painter! Because theoretical science and looking at a blank canvas and making something happen, well, it's all about the same.

Well the war is over in Europe now, I'm sure I'll get a chance to see London and Paris both before we head out to wherever we're going next.

A graduate of trinity, wow.

My major was business so I can't say I know much about speculative mathematics. What sorts of things do you like to paint?

Cityscapes, buildings -- architecture. They're something beautiful in the way we made the world and how she fits together. We're the gods of civilisation and I think our creation should be captured with all the integrity of the sweeping landscapes and sunset portraits of the past.
