In the centre of this vast, and yet empty city, there stands a tower of stone. The cracks suggest that it is of a hardy nature, able to withstand severe weather conditions, although the day is mild. The whole structure throbs with an unexplained electricity.

There is a scent of salt in the breeze, there is a beach nearby. It may well be a safe place to swim today, but at night the sharks know no fear, and everything fears them.

It's sunny, pleasant enough, everyone seems quite jovial. Well maybe that is more a sign of peace than of war? Who wants to waste ammunition? It coud be quite the philosopical thought process.

yes, indeed. well, we'll just see how we can get a coach out of here. back to Paris!

Storing up ammunition is hardly a sign of peace. He claims that he has spent his whole life in a warzone, although perhaps that was simply a clever metaphor about modern life. I often feel as if I never left the warzone. Do you?

Or a train. The train to Paris in the summer is a swell experience for anyone.

Well, there was the Great War just gone, and the Bower and Balklands before that, perhaps he is just a vetran. I don't know if everyone is as keen to drop in metaphors as you, my dear fellow.

That really sounds lovely, old sport. Where on earth have you gotten to, by the way? I'm dragging this little magic box around to see the sights and have yet to spot you.

He says that he is from the future. More war to come, then. Shame, really. I enjoy a good metaphor.

Excellent, but this time we will go to the station together. I'm not going all the way to Paris on my own because you can't read a train schedule properly, you hear?

The pub, where else?

Oh jolly! I found it quite an inspiration. No counting for what the thought of pending death can do you for you eh, old sport?

You know it isn't fair to bring that up, Ernie. You're well aware I have some difficulty with such complexities as that.

I'll join you shortly! get me a red, will you?

We will all die, inevitably. There is little use in dwelling on the thought, it's overdone. You won't get anywhere if you just obsess about death all the time. A truly great novel wouldn't concern itself with such things.

Yes, well, it was bloody embarrassing! I don't want a repeat of that disaster, honestly.

Marvellous, I will.
