In the centre of this vast, and yet empty city, there stands a tower of stone. The cracks suggest that it is of a hardy nature, able to withstand severe weather conditions, although the day is mild. The whole structure throbs with an unexplained electricity.

There is a scent of salt in the breeze, there is a beach nearby. It may well be a safe place to swim today, but at night the sharks know no fear, and everything fears them.

It is possible. I don't know if I would consider it a fight, but it would still show great courage. Only you can know if you are being honest with yourself. As long as you are true, it will mean what it means.

No, not at all. Any fool can have wild, unbridled, ridiculous, confusing sex. A boy can desire sex, and often does. It is very different to have sex and to make love. It is good to make love in the evening after you have worked well all day, or in the morning just because you can. But it does not make you a man.

Often, but you must not rely on it. It will only be effective if you truly intend to follow through if you must, or your opponent will see your hesitation.

I see.

I'm not ready to be a man. But thank you for your advice and support.

You will know when the time is right, and it doesn't happen all at once. It is a journey that you have already begun, although you may have many more steps to take.

I strive to be helpful and honest with everyone I meet, so you are welcome.

Far from it.

You know who I am, you already quoted my own advice at me.

Who are you?

My name is Patrick. Patrick or nothing.

Very well, Patrick it is.

Patrick! I'm Patrick. Hello. Hi.

Yes. Everything. Everything. Everything. We read you in school. I...I didn't... and your words are so-

Oh goodness. Goodness. Gosh.

Do you really have a moustache?

Yes, Patrick or nothing, my memory does stretch back that far.

In school? Why the hell would they have you read it in school? Seems like a damned waste of an education.

No, it's a fake moustache.

Oh. Yes. You remembered my name.

Because it is the staple of American education. Along with F. Scott Fitzgerald and then some other shit I didn't pay attention too.

You're totally Hemmingway, aren't you? Shit! Shit!!

Really?

Why do you have a moustache? Is it another sign of being manly?

Yes, I clearly have an astounding memory.

My book? The staple of American education? What the hell are you talking about, boy? Are you trying to make a fool of me? And Scott? Well- his writing has many fine points, but it's not honest, it's not educational.

Yes, I don't know why it reduces you to profanities, it's not that impressive.

Is it really fake? No.

I was in the military and grew accustomed to it.

You have no idea. No idea. No idea.

Seriously. Everything you've written. Everything. You're just so awesome. And F. Scott Fitzgerald is so good! He's brilliant! You're both brilliant!!

Wow.

I like it. Your moustache. I like it. Military. That's awesome. That's awesome. That's hot. Hot.

Your enthusiasm is appreciated but ultimately unnecessary.

Scott's here, too. He takes flattery well, his ego needs it.

It's hardly that surprising.

Please, calm yourself. You're worse than Gil.

Why would we live together? His opinion of my facial hair has never come up.

Well no, I suppose the two of you are a great couple and should always be together.

Oh my God, I have to tell people!

I don't know who Gil is.

Because! He's your best friend!

If we were always together, I can't imagine it would be too long before one or both of us attempted homicide.

I doubt anyone is going to be this interested.

No, I suppose you wouldn't. He's an American writer, working on his first novel, currently incomplete but it's getting there. I'm sure you'll know him one day.

And that requires us to live together? I have a wife and child at home already, I can't be looking after Fitz as well.

I wasn't in Kansas, I was in Paris. Tatie, not Toto. It's not the worst I've heard, though.
