I have a desperate and serious need of gold!

Pure gold, mixed with nothing, that can be hammered out thin enough to use as a hair ribbon. I have but six of them with me, and it is not nearly enough. I like to wear three braids on each side, and if I lose one, as I almost did in the sea, it is a cruel fate to be sure.

So!

Is there gold in the hills, and those who can mine it?

I am Eldar, not a dwarf.

I don't think anyone has really tried to mine yet. Maybe if it's that important you could search through some of the department stores and can find some jewelry that can be pounded out? Or search the hills yourself.

I have no skill with mining; that is not what I do.

Many of us have had to adapt . But if you'd rather not I'd say that the stores are going to be your best option, I don't think a lot of us have anything like gold here, and if they did it would probably have sentimental value.

Aye, but our reception here has not put me in the mood for compromise.

Is that compromise?

You people do not want compromise.

You want surrender.

I've never spoken to you before and would rather not be blamed for things said by people I barely know. I'm only trying to help and tell you where you might find the gold you want, I don't see where I'm asking you to compromise anything.

Fear. Do you remember when I said I was afraid?

All of us are - my people. Not afraid of physical harm. They cannot die.

Of being persecuted?

Yes. My father and I stay amongst Men, as we are part. But our close kin, from whom we are descended, do not.

They have not been well received and so they stay away. Is that wise? Is segregation the true path to peace?

I've never thought so. I think most of the problems between you kin and the others here come from differences in culture that become misunderstandings. If we all understood each other better than maybe it would be easier to accept help or offer advice within ourselves. And I think understanding is far more helpful when trying to reach peace.

It is the nature of the elves to ask a thousand questions. But in the face of persecution and attack, ought they still put ourselves out there and open themselves up to vulnerability? How many times must they face cruelty before deciding it is enough?

I seek to understand both, as I am neither.

Elves are stubborn and prideful, but Men are no less or any different. Both are wise, but Men change far more easily than do Elves.

I agree that most people are very stubborn and very prideful as well and when in stressful situations, like we are here, I think emotion tends to get the best of us. I can't say I know the answers though. Most of my life I've been trying to understand why men a cruel, through being on the receiving end of that cruelty and through fighting a war to try and stop it, but I still don't understand it.

I wish there were more I could do, other than open myself up to any questions and say that I will try more in the future to help stand up for anyone being hurt. I wish I'd realized this was happening before now but I've been admittedly distracted.

You? Perhaps not. And I apologize if I have offended you unduly.

But after the attacks made by others in this post, I am feeling a bit defensive. I did not mean for such a thing to happen.

It's alright, I just wanted to make sure you know that we're not all the same. And that sometimes mistakes are made.

I'm sorry you've been attacked but we're all in a situation we're uncomfortable with, it's hard to control emotion sometimes. When things are so difficult for so many they see anyone seeking what they see as luxury as being foolish. But with all of the different cultures and words that are being forced to interact here, the definitions of luxury and foolish are variable and misunderstanding is bound to happen.
