[Private to Andreth, a few hours after her arrival post]

Have you settled in, my lady?

I find myself with a few free hours and if you wish, I could show you where you may dine, and other such places around the city.

Nay, lady, there is little use for my skill here. And that is a blessing.

Then you must re-purpose yourself for other errands.

Aye, I do what I can, though much that we offer to do is scorned by the people here. They do not understand us, and I fear that unlike the Edain, they do not try.

But the woods are full of trees and creatures, and often I speak to them, and listen to their song. And the stars are bright and the sea reminds me of my mother. It is not a wholly bad place. I hope you shall come to find peace here.

Tell me, from what year do you come?

Are we not fully capable of it ourselves, I suppose? Or else burdened by pride and humiliated when we are told otherwise.

405.

We mean no shame or pity when we offer to help. There are many of us here, lady, and we grow bored with idleness. Yet it seems we are permitted to do nothing, and they only tell us continuously that their skills exceed our own. Perhaps it is so! I know not. But it leaves us with little to pass the time.

I hunt sometimes in the woods, or swim in the sea, or simply lay on my bed and sing to the ceiling just for the sound and the memories.

But ai, I talk too much.

Alas, I have seen fifty more years than you, but my long years quickly draw to a close.

Then let it be so! Let it be and when we have need we will call or we will fall. Such is the pride of Men. But you have skill and you are creators where Men are not. So create as always you have, and teach what you may where you will.

Your long years draw to no close, but a new beginning.

I do not wish to see you fall. But your words are wise, as always they are, lady. And I do much of what you say; I do not try much to interfere with them. I but watch, and admire. For we are not so different, Men and Elves. I have never thought so, though many try to set a gulf between us. Do we not both suffer? Do we not both bleed? Do we not both grieve loss and celebrate love? Do we not both feel fear and regret? Do we not both yearn for a hand in the darkness?

Ah, lady, but I shall not leave Mandos soon.

And yet it is as your brother has said. Elves are Elves and Men are Men despite our likenesses. Surely we feel, fear, and bleed the same but we are also threatened by you, I think. I know not. It was your hand that pulled us from the darkness, and still your eternal flame that will see us gone.

Why would you not? Mandos, I hear, the place of waiting. Why would you not return to life when Men are robbed of it and yours shall be eternal?

Fear us? But why? Ever have we been on your side, in all things. And has there not been friendship between Men and Elves? Has there not been love between our races?

There is life, my lady, and there is living. I do not wish for one without the other.

Aye, there has been. But ever have Elves been the big brother offering his hand to his little brother, weak Men.

You must though! You must.

It was Eru himself who set us first, my lady. That is not our doing. And there are very many kinds of weakness. Some Men have, but some Elves have and Men do not. I do not like thinking of us as so very different. Can we not simply be as we are to each other? I am Aegnor, and you are Andreth. Is that not enough?

I am weary, my lady, and sad. If I do leave Mandos, then I shall not leave Lórien.

It is enough! Ever has it been enough, but to deny that we are different is to ignore a fundamental part of our beings. But it is only part of who we are. Not all.

Live Aegnor, while you yet can. And see the things Men shall not.

As you say, lady. You are wise and I am not, this I know well. But I have never felt as if it were a thing insurmountable, or a thing that necessitates such a gulf between our kindreds. I have much love for elves and for Men; both are dear to me. Both are the Eruhin, and the turmoils of this world have we faced together.

I have already seen much that Men shall not. I need not see more.

And yet Elves have faced them in bliss, even by your own word - you have seen things Men shall not. The Light, the Powers that Be even. But what shall come shall come, and we are as we are in Arda Marred. However unfair.

Would that I could change the fates of elves and Men, lady, but it is not in my power to do so. I am but the youngest son of the youngest son, and such power is not in me.

I would share all the bliss I have known with you, if only I knew how.

It is a drink, lady. A hot drink. Slightly bitter, but I like mine with much cream and sugar.

I adore it, and I should like to see what you think.
