Hello everyone. I've been here nearly a week now, and while I've come up with all sorts of things I'd like to know, I thought maybe since none of us seem to really have much idea how the island itself does...whatever it does, I'd start with something that might be a bit easier to answer.

I know there's a great many people who have experienced changes in their bodies after going near the Spire. However, I was curious if anyone else has had their body change before that, when they arrived? Of course, no one is obligated to answer if it's too personal or anything, but I'd like to know if I'm something of anomaly or not.

Thank you in advance.

Body changes? Nay, I am the same as I was when I arrived here. Is this a common thing? I have only just arrived.

Oh my, this place really does like collecting people. You're something like the fifth new arrival I know of since I showed up just last week.

Yes, there's a structure in the city--the stone tower in the center of things apparently has a habit of altering people who go poking around too much. I received several warnings about it the day I arrived.

Well, it only makes sense not to go poking around it, then, don't you think?

It does, but it's understandable why some more curious people might not be able to resist. And by the same token, it would also be beneficial to see how and why it's doing what it does to possibly reverse or prevent some of the less pleasant changes people experience. Not to mention it may be responsible or at least playing a part in bringing people here if it has that sort of power. And, in my case, I wouldn't be surprised if it caused the changes I experienced when I arrived even though I was no where near it at the time.

I don't have any intention of bothering it myself until I've at least got some decent research equipment because I rather enjoy having the ability to breathe on my own, but that doesn't prevent me from trying to gather as much data from people as I can in the mean time.

My experience tells me that it is not wise to question the Valar, or their doings. It brings only grief.

Well. Experiences I've had, I prefer to think any kind of higher being doesn't have that much concern over our affairs on the smaller scale, unless they have a very sick sense of humor. But, I'm probably one of the last people who should even be theorizing about things of that nature.

I'd prefer to think this is something men set in motion, although even then I'm not sure I'll like whatever reason they had, considering the less than benevolent things some people have fallen victim to.

Ah, I forget that some do not know the Valar as I do, that to some they are but myths. It is a strange thing to accept.

Yes. I hope I haven't offended you in anyway. Considering I've been in contact with the work of some people my world would call gods, I should probably speak a bit more carefully around similar--entities.

Offended me? Nay! It only makes sense that those who do not know the Valar should not have such faith in them.

And I am not one of them, only one who worships them, and has faith in their goodness.

Good. Not everyone would be as understanding of the simple basis of ignorance. More than a few of my colleagues have stories of offending gods and their worshippers because they didn't know what they were speaking to, so it seemed better to err on the side of caution.

I do hope your arriving here hasn't been terribly disruptive to your life back home, at any rate. That seems to happen almost as often as the transformations, people getting brought here away from some pretty important matters.

There were some pretty disruptive things happening to me back home, so I don't know that it could be said it was more disruptive here. I think not.

And my daughter is here, and a beloved friend, so I am content.

Things were much the same for me, so I can understand that.

That's good. I know not everyone is so lucky, I--well, I'm glad you're not alone, anyway.

I am very lucky, I know it. There is no reason to complain about this place. I am sorry for those who are here alone, though.

I'm fine. Actually, given the tricks this place seems to play, what happened to me seems outright benevolent.

I was sort of--not quite dead, but I'd lost my body before I arrived here. And now I've got one that's in a lot better shape than the first one I had. I'm just curious to know if my rather unique circumstances back home played in to things or if it's just another random happenstance of this place.

...That DOES sound rather benevolent of it, rather...! I mean, *I* arrived here on a filthy, great sandy beach, and I was wounded - mortally, so I thought, but... the Doctor Watson patched me up just fine...! I mean, it's a bloody miracle, really, that I didn't DIE of sepsis, or summat...! Heh!

I wonder how many of us have come here like that--dead or close to it, and why it takes those kinds of people. Maybe it figures we'll be more willing subjects for whatever it has in mind out of some kind of gratitude.

Or it could be completely random and we're just spectacularly lucky. But that seems like one hell of a coincidence, and I generally don't believe in those. I'd like to think there's some reason behind the selection process.

Well, fuck! That's brilliant! Yeah, I've heard of the island doing that kind of thing- there are a few people who remember dying, but here they are alive and well.

Yes it--certainly is. Strange, but I'll take it.

That's fascinating. If it weren't for the fact that it seems to be taking people completely randomly, I'd be wondering what all those people have in common that make them--well, worthy for lack of a better word, of getting a fresh start.

I know what you mean. I've tried to figure out a common link before, but I've always come up blank. I will say that a lot of us seem to have come from times of high stress- but not everyone, I don't think.

Really? Well, I'd imagine that must have been even more of a shock than some of the things the Spire's done to people.

I was walking around naked when I was found. Had to learn all about clothes and stuff.

Oh god. I can't imagine how overwhelming that would've been, having to do all that along with learning about the island. I've had to learn to do a lot of things for myself, but at least they're the sorts of things I grew up watching others do.

Would you...if you could, would you change back? Or have you--gotten used to this form?

I like having fingers too much to go back to having hooves, but I do kind of miss the rest of my family too.

Yes, I've gotten rather attached to being able to use my limbs, so I can relate. But...there are people I miss back home, too. Neither one's really equivalent to the other, but it still wouldn't make choosing between the two easy if you had to.
