Right okay not to piss on anyone's cornflakes or anything, but it occurs to me that we have a lot of different people from different times and worlds and everything and as such perhaps not everyone's aware of the availability and reliability of contraceptives here on the island.

And just in case anyone's unfamiliar with the concept - they're designed to stop a woman from becoming pregnant. There are a number of forms and although I'm not a health care professional I don't mind answering any questions you might have, although you might prefer to direct them to one of the doctors. Doctor Watson seems particularly knowledgeable about the subject and was a great deal of help when I worked out the island cannot be trusted not to remove you from your normal form of birth control.

I don't suppose I've ever been in a position to consider it greatly. That's very interesting- yes, very interesting. Did it not cause arguments? Is there anything new that men can use, or are we still on rubbers?

Yes, I do agree. In my time at least, I don't think the majority of people were aware of how to prevent it. Or perhaps their particular religious sensitivities (that they then inflicted upon the rest of society) prevented it even being open for discussion. I imagine you would have been among the suffragettes? Or what do you say now- simply feminist? No matter how lucky anyone is, there is always room for improvement in one way or another. I'm not sure what the tories are, I apologize.

Yeah I suppose so. In some places. The UK seems cooler about it than America, but I suppose we're not as much of a religious country which probably has something to do with it. Plus we're much smaller so we have fewer nutjobs. I seem to remember there being talk of a pill for men, but I don't think it ever really got off the ground, but no you're basically stuck with condoms, sorry.

I don't suppose it was nearly as simple back then. I mean the pill didn't really become widely available until the 60s, so I suppose it was more down to the man. I imagine I'd've been throwing myself under horses, yeah. That's the word yeah. And you're right, absolutely. And it's impossible for everyone to agree on how to improve things. Yeah right sorry - they're a political party - basically a bunch of privataly educated toffs who are more interested in helping their rich friends get riches by making the poor get poorer.

From what I saw throughout Europe, pretty much everywhere is "cooler" about it than America, but then I suppose America was built on Christian values. They simply forget that they weren't the first inhabitants, and they're certainly not the be all and end all. I'm speaking out of turn I That's all right, they have never failed me yet. That I know of

I suppose that's what I mean about arguments. It leaves a woman free to make her own choices about these things. I think it is a good thing, but there are many who wouldn't. No, you're right- there are many things I would think of as an improvement that would be laughed at in some circles. Why, I imagine there are plenty who would like to see me exiled or- goodness knows what. I see. Well, that certainly doesn't seem to have changed much.

I take it you're not a religious man then, Gatsby?

You're clearly one of those progressing thinkers. I agree completely and it seems ridiculous to me than almost a hundred years on woman still aren't given the complete right to decide what happens to their own bodies. Yeah, I wouldn't mind so much if they actually gave something back but most of them don't even pay tax because they can pay accountants to work out how they can avoid it, in a completely legal way!

I'm worse than that, I'm a Jew. Could you not tell?

Oh, well thank you, I should think that's a compliment. It sounds like there is still a long way to go. I don't know if You'd probably hate that I spent most of my life desperate to be rich, and They're a rotten crowd, and I'm sorry I was ever a part of it.

You're trying to get me to make a penis joke here, right?

It was intended as one, yeah. I wonder if we'll ever get to a point where the people in charge will just accept people should be trusted to make their own choices. If those choices end up killing them well that's their look out. I'm sure some of them are okay. I mean I've not wanted to punch you once, and that's quite the feat if I'm honest.

Shit! I- really don't know what to say to that!

I really doubt that it will ever get to that point, sadly. Well, some of them, perhaps. A small number. It is perhaps because- well, there's no reason to lie any more- I'm what they patronizingly refer to as 'new money'. It probably changes things.

Yes or no?

Yeah the people that are born into it have no fucking clue what it's like to be skint and thus don't care. There's nothing wrong with earning your money rather than just being given it.

Was I setting you up for a joke? No, certainly not!

That's about right, yes. There's not much that they do care about, to be honest. Well, not everyone sees it that way, apparently.

Then I'll keep it to myself then. But no, I can't say I'd noticed.

Beyond money, obviously. Yeah well some people are idiots.

I'm sure I can fill in the punchline for myself. Well, that's something. I must say it surprised a few when they realized I wasn't living up to their little- stereotypes. They're used to being able to spot one a mile away. Makes them a little uneasy. I can't say I've noticed it mattering too much here.

Well, of course. They certainly are, despite their expensive educations.

I'm sure you can. You seem fairly smart. Yeah I can't say I notice all that much about people beyond their personalities if I'm totally honest. You really don't go for following the trends, do you?

I'm not convinced paying to education people makes them much smarter if I'm honest.

Well, thank you. That's a very fine quality you have. Most people are so quick to make assumptions. I don't know. I did follow certain trends, just not the ones I was supposed to.

I doubt that it does.

Of course I say that, but there are certain groups of people I'd automatically hate. I mean I was to hate Malcolm when I first spoke to him purely because he worked in politics, but generally speaking I'd say I'm pretty open minded. I don't believe just because someone's human that makes them better any other species. That sounds fair though - pick and chose the ones you like.

And yet you still took the time to get to know him, and you were flexible enough to change your opinion later. That's quite different. When I was younger, I recall some people were unwilling to shake my hand in case- I don't know what. As if it was catching, perhaps. Yes, I'm still getting used to the idea that there are other species here, but it would certainly be hypocritical of me to assume any sort of superiority based on circumstances of birth.

I can't say it took much time actually. Like maybe five minutes, if that. And I really wish I could say I was surprised by what you've said - but I'm not. Nothing about people acting like narrow minded bigots surprises me anymore. As far as other species - I suppose I'm quite lucky in that it isn't especially new to me.

Well there we go then, that's hardly holding onto a prejudice. No,I came to expect it, I think. Especially during the war. I suppose considering all of the different species here now, it's not exactly something I have to be careful about mentioning any more. Is the- supernatural commonplace in the future?

No but it was there in the first place, which isn't great. No, I don't think anyone cares about any of that stuff, although saying that we might be surprised, although the real bigots seem to have left the island. No, no. It's more a world specific thing. Which really isn't something you expect to have to say.

Well, I've heard it said that we all have our prejudices, what matters is whether or not we act on them. Oh, I don't suppose I would be too surprised, although it is good to know that the worst of them have departed. How odd indeed- I've been told I am fictional in other worlds. It's a little bit much to take in.

I'd happily punch just about any Tory in the face until my arm hurt, I'm really not that great a person. Yeah there are some people I really wasn't sorry to see the back of. Yeah, from what I can gather we all are. But it's not really something I like to think about too much, anyway it doesn't make much difference really, does it? As far as we're concerned we're real.
