This is Lieutenant Tayrey of the Tradelines, with the Prosperity. What is your station designation?

I'm going to need to patch across station comms, or take out a Sibril line if we're too far out. The Prosperity will settle the account if it hasn't disappeared betweenspace because I apparently

It's urgent. I'm the astrogator. The ship could be lost. Wake your first-shift captain if you have to.

Hello, this is Colonel Crawley of... the King's Guard.

We are a former mining station, in the region of Sagranda, near the Arcadian trading route. You will not be able to contact your ship from here.

King's Guard? What kind of way-out frontier station has

Can you clarify? When you say I can't contact the ship, do you mean you won't allow it, or you're having communication trouble and it isn't possible?

If this is a frontier station then I know a Sibril line is going to be costly, but my ship will settle it. It's very urgent. Possible catastrophic incident in L-space.

I mean we are having communication trouble and it isn't possible.

I don't know what a lot of those words mean, I apologise.

Liberty might know. She explained L-space to me a couple of months ago.

Oh, good, I'll message her. Thank you.

Understood. It's not your fault. It's mine, and they're all going to die, and

That's a hazard of the slower ships. I'm guessing this isn't a frontier station, but an older one. There's no Arcadian route on our Tradelines.

If I can't contact the ship then there's nothing I can do except wait and hope they come through safely.

It's a strange one, to be honest. We're all in a similar but different situation. Out of time, out of place, out of communication range.

I can try to repair your long-range communications if you could do with the assistance, but even if I can do it, it'll take time.

When exactly did your people go out from Earth, Colonel? You're making it sound almost like this is one of the lost pre-Breakaway settlements.

Perhaps, but you’ll want to talk to Finn Collins about that one. His name will be loaded into your contacts already.

We’re all from different times, ranging from I think the Vikings to… I’m actually not even sure. I’m from the 19th Century myself. The station has an earth date of 2022 AD but I doubt it’s accuracy.

You mean you're not in command of

Earth 19th century? I'm sorry. I think I completely misunderstood this situation or I have gone completely mad. You got here through some kind of temporal anomaly, then, I take it? I don't think the first ships went out until 2060? Something like that.

And you must have no idea what I was asking for. A Sibril line is - well, when the early ships went out, communication between colonies was unbelievably slow. When we established the Tradelines, we set up relay stations along them, to push messages. I won't go into the mechanics of it, but faster. But if you're not within range of a relay station, you'd have to send a ship out there, until someone came up with Sibril lines, which can do it remotely. But the further out you are, the more expensive they are, so not many station captains or frontier colony directors would agree to it for no good reason.

I needed one because I'm the ship's astrogator. It's my job to see the ship safely through L-space. I don't know what I did wrong, but it must have been catastrophic for me to end up here without the ship. And if I can't contact them, they'll be lost. All of them. Everyone I care about. And it'll be my fault, and I'll never get back on the Tradelines again because an astrogator coming back without a scratch on her and saying everyone else was lost is either murderous or dangerously incompetent. And I'm not. I honestly don't know what happened. We were on course and it was a known route.

Yes, that's it exactly, you've got it. As far as I'm aware, we've all come here through the same temporal anomaly, as you call it.

Ah, I see. Then I have learned something today.

Astrog Like a navigator for space, okay. You didn't do anything wrong, this place just 'steals' you from a particular moment in your life, keeps you for... however long it deems necessary- and then spits you back out again. They won't be lost, whenever it does spit you back out, you'll go back to the same moment in time and won't have been missed at all. We believe this because more than a few people, myself included, have experienced this very phenomenon. And then returned to tell the tale, as you can see.

Then it wasn't an L-space incident at all? That changes everything! I can go back, and I can bring everyone through safely.

This saves my ship, and my career, and - thank you! I can't say how much difference that knowledge makes. Thank you.

How long were you here before you went back?

Not unless something else had happened before you appeared here.

You're very welcome, I'm glad!

Oh, I hate to tell you, it was a couple of years.

No, it was all nominal, very routine trip. As routine as L-space ever gets, anyway. That was why it was such a shock to find myself here.

After what I thought might have just happened, I can put up with a couple of years.
