Is this like some sort of Facebook? I never had a Facebook before now. I did have Pokémon Go, but I can't seem to get it here. And I know it's nothing like Facebook anyway, but

Hello, I'm Steven. I'm new here. I mean, obviously I'm new or I wouldn't be telling everyone my name, would I?

Peter helped me yesterday when I arrived (Thank you, Peter!) and now I have a new flat and I want to go home all my books are here, and even Gus!

This is Gus.

Laters, gators!

Oh, sorry! Ma'am? My Lady? I dunno what I should call you, sorry!

But you could do. The phone that you're talking to me on, it can take pictures like the one I took of Gus.

My lady is proper, yes. And you are Steven of where?

This? The sorcerous metal scribing tool? I did not think it could be more miraculous than it already is.

I'm from London. My Lady.

It's just a phone. My Lady. Has anyone shown you how to use one?

Londinium? But it must be! To hear from a countryman warms my heart. I have been there, it is nigh-on two weeks' journey from Cheverel.

Mayhaps you will be the one to show me, Steven of Londinium.

Yes! If I was a Roman, it'd be Londinium, yes, that's correct. Yes. My Lady.

Ah! I see you are a well-educated man, but certes there have been no Romans in Londinium for many a year. Only we Pretani.

Pretani? What They left in the year 410 AD.

Should I keep calling you "My Lady" in every sentence, or does that get annoying? I really don't know, and I should know, but I've never spoken to a Lady before. Or if I did, she didn't tell me.

Oh no, no, you need not with everything you write! It is not wrong, and a courtesy would never annoy, but also it is not necessary, no more than if I were a woman without rank you would have to write my name each time. A lady knows when the one addressing her means to be courteous, and when he does not, and the particulars are always less important than that.

Now I do not like to gainsay a scholarly man, but the Romans were in Pretannica after that, I am sure of it. Some of Sorvidun was not built by then, and it was their work. Let me ask you a strange and fey question - by your reckoning, how many years have passed since our lord Jesus Christ was born?

It's 2024. So, that's how many years.

That is six hundred more than by my count, Steven of Londinium.

The city must be very changed.

Six hundred years, seriously? Wow.

Oh, yeah, yeah, very changed! It's a lot bigger for one!

Bigger? It has perhaps fifty thousand people now, but I was told there were many more before the Pestilence. How much bigger? Seventy? A hundred thousand?

That's unimaginable!

You don't mean it, do you? They must all be starving! The surrounding land couldn't support even a fraction of that.

I mean it. But we get food from everywhere, so it's okay. I mean, not really, the carbon footprint for, like, a pineapple must be through the roof, and that isn't great for the environment, but if there's enough demand for it, then it's going to show up in the shops.

I am trying, believe it, but it seems impossible. You would need food from everywhere, yes. Every spare acre in the country set to growing it. I haven't encountered the pine apple variety, but apples are plentiful enough in the right season.

It is very impressive. Your king must be a very clever and efficient man.

We don't have a King, we have a Queen. Elizabeth II.

You do? Oh, I do like that. I was named for Queen Matilda. Then your queen must be an exceotionally clever and efficient woman!

Sorry to interrupt, but I have some extra pineapple if you and your daughter would like to try some.

Mr Darcy kindly gifted it to us, and it is too much for the two of us to indulge on alone. It's really quite spectacular.

That is very kind of you, my lord! Is it a very special variety of apple? I really have not heard of it before.

It's a tropical fruit, not related to the apples you will know. I think it has to be seen to believed, to be honest. It is excellent.
