Please tell me that all is well!

It is not so bad as I thought. I cannot write, I am speaking to my phone now, but I will not lose my arm, and by Asharai I will heal and not fall to the wound fever.

You must visit me, all of you, even if you avoid one another in your feuding. The pain - the pain is bad, but I must bear it, because I have seen too many half-drowned in taishel-syrup and never the same in the mind after their bodies healed. The medics here are too quick to press for these things! I am not so damaged to be left to that!

Tell me you are reading this and you are not hurt, and nothing worse came of this. You are all blameless to me. It happened because it was seen to happen, and we are all powerless before the magic that underpins the world.

Dear Katarin,

I apologise for the delay in responding to you, and for not checking on your wellbeing earlier. This technology is very new to me, I'm more used to the quill and ink. Mr Crawley has since shown me how to access my correspondence and how to respond in kind.

I thank God that you will not lose your arm, or take any infection to the wound. The medics here seem very capable, which is a welcome relief.

Of course I will visit. I hold no grudges, and would much sooner become friends and allies than continue feuding over a simple misunderstanding. Your men were noble in their intentions, and that is admirable despite the unfortunate outcome.

Yours,
A. Hamilton.

It was new to me too, but you will find it becomes easier with time. There are many amazing things in this place.

It pleases me that there will be no feud. They were all well-intentioned, and you cannot blame people for fulfilling a destiny that they cannot change. I would like to see you all friends.

Rawdon Crawley has probably not given you Kordalan tea, so I say that I will, as soon as I am well enough. If you would like to meet more people, I am leading a class tomorrow, and I will not miss it. Will you come?

I believe it. I found just the light switch amazing.

I think you will see that. I will have you all to dinner sometime.

He did not, no, he opted for brandy for the shock. Which was appreciated, but I am looking forward to trying the tea.

You have just been shot, and you are leading a class tomorrow? I have serious respect for that. What kind of class is it?

It is! We had experimented with the power, but that application! A very clever way to light your home.

Dinner would be wonderful. I'd love that.

I try very hard not to let anyone down who is depending on me. It is in Elemental Magic, although I think my leading will now be standing by the side and directing, because raising magic while injured can be dangerous. There will be others giving talks about their abilities, and lunch together, so you do not have to be able to do the magic to join us.

It is. Although I fear I'm going to have a headache with the brightness of it all for a while yet.

Perfect.

That is a very admirable quality. I have absolutely no magic, but I'll come along and observe if you're sure no one will object.

Mr Hamilton,

Let me first ask you to excuse the interruption of your correspondence with Miss Tavehi with this message. I too would much prefer to have a quill in my hand, but this seemed the most expedient way to reach you.

Colonel Crawley has explained the situation to me, and as the other party to it, I wish to offer my apology as well. I truly thought that you would injure the young lady, and I acted accordingly. I would have no rancor between us.

In goodwill I would like to offer my assistance should you wish to source alternatives to any of the technological items. I do have a fine set of quills, for instance, and magical ink of various kinds. We cannot live as we were accustomed to, but we can certainly make life more comfortable.

Yours &c.

A.C. Black

Mr Black,

Don't apologise, it's good to hear from you.

I know, I know, I've calmed down a lot, the colonel has explained everything over plenty of brandy, including what was going on with the stick you were brandishing. I know that I'm lucky to be alive right now. I also know why you did it, and I understand. I accept your apologies, and let us move on now.

What is magical about the ink? I would gladly accept the quill if you have any to spare. As necessary as this is, I imagine I'll take my own notes by hand as usual.

Hamilton,

My word, you mean my wand, don't you? You really didn't know what it was. You must have thought I'd forgotten a weapon and was improvising, rather poorly. Ah, we must see the funny side in that, at least.

I suspect you and I are going to get along capitally. I wouldn't advise not having one of these little machines, but writing by hand is always preferable. I have ink that only becomes visible when read by the intended recipient, although I am not certain if it will work for you. Then there is the quick-drying stuff, or an ink that changes colour for emphasis, and they might.

Let me know when you are settled, and I'll fly some things over.

Black,

Yes, your wand! I was so confused, especially when no one else seemed to be commenting on how ridiculous it was. Funny now, for sure.

I hope so, a man could use some friends around here. As unusual as your magic is to me, I still somehow find it less disconcerting than a lot of the modern ways. I have heard some seriously weird shit things since I got here, but I'm trying my hardest to remember when my opinion may be best kept to myself for the time being. I've never been very good at that, I'll admit.

As for the machines, I hope to get to grips with the useful ones as soon as I can, for practical purposes. I agree, though, that the words flow much easier by hand. Also, the light from the machine gives me a headache and I end up squinting too much. The immediacy of the correspondence also feels very demanding and ill-mannered.

Fly?

Hamilton,

That is one of the troubles with some of the 'modern' people. They are very quick to venture their opinions on how things were done in times before theirs, but do not like hearing what others may think of their ways. I try to ignore the worst absurdities, because there is nothing to gain from arguing over them. I shall say, however, that you can speak your mind to me. I daresay we will agree on many matters where the others here are concerned, and if you should say anything about magic that offends, I'll tell you plainly, and not assume it was any sort of deliberate slight.

The telephone machine is my only concession, really. You are quite right about the demand. Were I receiving letters I could sit in my study and answer them at leisure, and then set aside thoughts of correspondence until the next day. It is much harder to do that here, although I would advise not looking at it by candlelight. Out-of-doors, in the daytime, may be better for your health.

Did you see the flying carpet that the colonel and I arrived upon? It is a little the worse for wear now, but I am working on restoring it. Far better than walking the great distances that would be required in this place, and more practical than a horse.
