Yes. That must mean that you aren't new, but it never gets any less shocking and weird?

that's not what I mean by sh

I've been here for a while, yes. And not really? Not for me. It might be different for other people.

Then may I ask what has shocked you today in particular?

Brand new memories from my childhood.

I see. I'm sorry. Suddenly remembering things that were buried deep can be a difficult experience, I imagine. There is probably a reason why you are remembering now, but if it's not clear to you, it's best not to dwell on these things too much. Sometimes the past is better left in the past.

Who are you? I'm Miguel.

I'm Hannah Hale. My children and I arrived here today. It's all very inconvenient.

Oh. When you go home, you go back to the point in time when you came from. So it's not that inconvenient. It'll be like you never went away.

That might be the strangest thing I've ever heard, but it makes sense, if what we have here is time travel.

We do. I'm from the year 2099.

Really? What's it like in 2099?

My apartment is on the 252nd floor of my building. Companies run cities. They also run the police forces. The division between poor people and rich people continues to widen. You can get away with murder if you're rich enough. Cars can fly. There are surveillance cameras everywhere. Superheroes are only starting to come back.

Some of those things aren't so different from 1920. I'll tell my younger son about the flying cars. He'll like that, even if they're just more clever toys for very rich people. What do you mean by superheroes?

People with powers or skills that are beyond those of a normal human. They do what they can to help those who are oppressed. There were so many towards the end of the 20th Century and into the start of the 21st, but then something happened and they all died or vanished trying to stop the Catastrophe from happening. There are very few surviving records from that time so nobody knows exactly what it was, but it happened around 2020. There was talk of a plague as well, that wiped out a lot of people and animals. It took a while, but people eventually got back on their feet and then technology came on in leaps and bounds and the megacorporations grew in power with that.

It's only recently that superheroes have started to reemerge and fight back.

I heard rumors about those sorts of people. Mostly from America, and never anything definite. I wonder why there will be so many by the end of the century. It's hard to imagine. Did the government try to use their skills for its own purposes? It would have happened had they really been around in my time, I'm sure.

Are there no good corporations in your time? I know there are some companies driven purely by greed, but others have tried to make a better world, building homes for workers, and schools for their children. There must have been lots of rebuilding to do after the plague.

I think there were some teams that were government-sanctioned, but most were independent, either individuals or teams. You would be better asking someone who was there at the time, who could give you more accurate information. I'm going by history books.

There were a few. My then-fiancée worked for one, but she's dead but they tended to be smaller, less influential and then they would be bought over by the megacorporations.

I'll do that if I find them, yes. Thank you for what you've told me. It's very helpful. There's a lot here that is unfamiliar.

Yes, that sounds like the way of the world, but it's good that these small companies exist, even if only for a while. I did piecework for a large factory for a while, and I don't recommend it.
