I am sure your betrothed is delightful, whenever she is from. As for the alarm - well, I'll ask your pardon if you think it wrong for me to mention this to my seniors, but the modern dress is awfully troubling. It is bad enough when the women dress like men, but when they leave their lower limbs uncovered altogether it is - a fellow doesn't know where to look, you understand! When I first saw them I thought I had wandered into a bawdy house, but I got a slap for that presumption.
And then there was the prospect of being flattened by an automobile, which is a faster, noisier, dirtier sort of carriage machine without any horses. They were everywhere. And nobody had any respect for my family, or any sense of social order at all, but almost to a man they reacted to my desire for a mug of beer and a game of cards as if I were some infant innocent and they my especially priggish nurses.
