Judging by the date, that was not just some vivid nightmare, and I’ve been AWOL.

I won’t even ask what I’ve missed. I need a drink

Shep?

Thank God, you’re still here.

I don’t know, you’d better come and make sure.

[Seconds later he sends a private voice note]
Hello, Commander. Have you ran off with a wealthy bachelor? Do I have to kill a man?

Where are you?

[Private voice]

Nope, I'm too cantankerous. So I'm all yours, if you'll still have me.

[A photo of a wall marker].

Heading to the Normandy, if you are still there.

[Private voice]

In a low growl

Immediately.

I'm not, but I know where you are.

[Private voice]

Keep talking like that, Colonel, and you wont make it to the Normandy without a little bit of scandal before hand.

Well if it isn't the second most smoothest talking Brit that I've ever met! Welcome back.

Second most? Dear God, where have I failed?

Well, I have a beau now, who could melt frozen butter in the northern most point of Norway in the winter.

Technically I have two, but the other is a Welshman.

Oh you do? Who is this fine specimen of a beau? Good enough for you, I hope.

One not enough for you?

He is Sir Jacob Frye. And I often question if I am good enough for him.

Well, more like I couldn't choose, and neither could they. The other Captain Edward Kenway.

Are you really an Englishman, sir? There are so few of us here, I should be very glad to become acquainted with another.

Yes, indeed. Rawdon Crawley of Queen's Crawley, Hampshire. Pleasure to meet you.

I take it you are fairly new around here?

The pleasure is mine, Mr Crawley. How do you do? I am Arcturus Black, of London. I suppose I am relatively new to this place, but it seems rather a long time since I have seen home. I was away at school in Scotland, you know, and then managed to get myself pulled into one extraordinary realm after another. Rotten luck, really.

Very well, thank you. It seems I've been missing from the station for about 18 months, but it felt like a matter of an hour or so to me.

Ah, so you are no stranger to being dragged into different worlds. You should settle just fine then. They're a good bunch round here.

That's downright peculiar, but it isn't the first time I've heard something of the sort, either.

In the last place I found that I didn't care much for the people of the future, but I shall take your word for it. At least there is less to be alarmed by this time.

It is, absolutely. I suppose it's strange the sort of things you can get used to.

Really? Gad, I'm mad for them. But then, I am engaged to a woman from centuries ahead of me, so I may be a little biased.

What was alarming about before?

Yes, when there isn't any choice in it.

I am sure your betrothed is delightful, whenever she is from. As for the alarm - well, I'll ask your pardon if you think it wrong for me to mention this to my seniors, but the modern dress is awfully troubling. It is bad enough when the women dress like men, but when they leave their lower limbs uncovered altogether it is - a fellow doesn't know where to look, you understand! When I first saw them I thought I had wandered into a bawdy house, but I got a slap for that presumption.

And then there was the prospect of being flattened by an automobile, which is a faster, noisier, dirtier sort of carriage machine without any horses. They were everywhere. And nobody had any respect for my family, or any sense of social order at all, but almost to a man they reacted to my desire for a mug of beer and a game of cards as if I were some infant innocent and they my especially priggish nurses.

Oh, I completely understand although I know exactly where to. Darcy made some similar presumptions, and got himself off to a rocky start. I think he'd understand well. As for me, I may be a gentleman by lineage, but I'm a military man. I had a little more life experience exposure to such behaviour back home.

How old are you, if you don't mind me asking?

If you want a beer and a game of cards, I'm certainly your man. What's your game?

I expect that you have seen all manner of strange and uncivilised things on your travels. I tried to think of it like that at first, and tell myself they simply didn't know any better, but they weren't exactly educable on the matter, either.

I am almost fifteen, sir, and among my people a man comes to his full majority at seventeen. I would understand sermonising from my elders on the perils of gambling, such as they may be, but not fuss over small beer! It was peculiar. They wouldn't have let a man of twenty drink, either.

Splendid. You're a decent fellow. I'm partial to tarocchini, although if you haven't the cards for that we could play whist, or twenty-one. Whatever you'd like.

That I have, although there is not much more strange and uncivilised than the delights of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens past midnight.

Ah, yes, the perils of gambling indeed. I don't think people are quite so fussy on the age limit here; they must understand that people come from many different worlds. In saying that, I'm not sure that Bryn would serve you. I can appreciate your frustration there.

I'm not familiar with it, but if you can find the cards I'm happy to learn. Otherwise, your other two choices are perfectly acceptable to me.

I shall take your word for it. I think my school was built in such a remote area so that those of us capable of sneaking out after midnight without getting caught could only enjoy the delights of the village pub.

Thank you for the advice. I shall avoid this Bryn's establishment, then, and find others. There's one place I have found with a decent supply of beer, but it's utterly empty, and if you're going to drink alone you might just as well do it in your study.

Let's start with the other games, then, and if we have a fine time I can make a new set of cards before we next meet, and I'll teach you the tarot games.
