[The first message is a photo of a five year old girl eating breakfast.]

Morning.

Yes, she’s mine.

No, I have no idea what I’m doing.

We met a couple of days ago, and of course she wants her mother.

Any advice?

First, you couldn't deny her if you tried. She basically has James Bond stamped on her forehead.

Second, what is her name?

Advice, you're pretty much past the really hard part, she's basically already potty trained, so feed and water whenever she says hey I'm hungry, or thirsty. I mean you could try to get her to do that stuff at specific times but you'll get a lot of 'I'm not hungry' and have to try again in basically an hour. If you feel weird about supervising a bath, you could camp outside the door, just in case she needs you... How old is she?

I know, she really does, doesn’t she?

Mathilde. Her mother is French.

Yes, I’m eternally thankful that she can talk, walk, and use the big girl toilet. I’ve lucked out there. She’s 5.

You did a good job, she's beautiful.

You might want to come up with a nickname so you can reserve the whole name for when she's in trouble or you need to inject some seriousness.

The reason I asked is because we have a school.

You're just congratulating me on my genetics now?

Clever. It lends itself well to nicknames. Tilly, maybe, if she likes it.

Well that's fantastic news. I don't think I'm built for teaching someone to read.

Hey, you could have kept them to yourself, but you decided to share them instead.

That has a nice ring to it... Tilly Bond.

All the teachers are great, my kids love them.

Sharing is caring after all.

Well, I think it would be Tilly Swann for now. I'm not sure. God, I don't even know my daughter's full name But Tilly Bond does sound like one fierce woman, if she decides to take on the mantle.

Excellent. She will need some English tuition, although perhaps talking with peers might help. Are there many around her age around here?

Agreed! I've done it eight times.

It should be whatever she's comfortable with, for now, when she's old enough and understands, you can give her the choice.

We happen to have an excellent English teacher. He was a writer in his world, and a former teacher when he wasn't writing.

You're a brave woman.

Don't worry, I know better than to think I can just show up five years too late and start messing with things. It's a long road, and she's confused enough as it is. For now, I'm just called James, and I'm going to look after her until we can find her mother again. Seems age appropriate enough for today, and there's enough going on with the whole... being in space thing.

That's good news. I want to give her time to recover from recent trauma (things were... terrifying for her, frankly. Never mind losing her mother and switching worlds). However long it takes. And then maybe you can put me in touch.

Well, crazy is more like it, because I was only pregnant three times.

Five years late is better than not at all. And knowing you, like I do, I bet you came to the rescue when she needed you most.

Well of course, but I will say setting up a routine as quickly as possible, especially after a trauma, is better than you would believe. But you do need to give her time to mourn. I wish we had a therapist, but I can only give you advice on what I have experienced.

Ah, the strangeness of time travel and gender swaps?

I suppose. In my defence, I didn’t know she existed. I wasn’t deliberately absent. The job does by definition make you rather hard to contact. It’s a long story though.

Madeleine. I don’t know why I keep saying “her mother”. Her name is Madeleine.

That’s true. I lost my own parents as a child, and I suppose what helped was schooling and loving guardians around.I’ll give her a week at least. She deserves that much.

Eh, no I am more likely to have a litter than a single child. I was 'human' when Tim was conceived. But one of my daughters was conceived thanks to a gender swap, Clint spent a little over a year as a woman, but that was on the island.

I wasn't judging you at all. I imagine if you were even allowed to have those kinds of connections that it would be hard for you and them.

Madeleine. Do you want her to show up here?

It'll give her a chance to acclimate to the station too.

Oh! Wow, I think that might be even braver / crazier.

I know you weren't. It tends to prove impossible. I was "retired", but the past never lets you stop looking over your shoulder, and you know how international terrorists like to hold a grudge. They're not stupid, they know I don't care what they do to me. A lover, or a child... well, that'll get a reaction. It's hardly rocket science.

Yes, very much.

It's a lot to take in. Kids are adaptable though, I think.

I would say it was, could you imagine, as a man, becoming a woman, and then carrying a child?

I actually can relate. Though mine were home grown terrorists.

For you, or Tilly?

Yes they are, I know mine will always miss Tony and Clint, but they've handled it better than I have.

I really can’t, and I’m not sure I want to.

Back home? It must feel like a lifetime ago for you by now. Were you not one of the first people on that island? Have you disappeared and returned at all?

Both. We were planning a future, but the past wouldn’t let go yet.

Shit. I didn’t even ask. They’re both gone? I’m so sorry.

I'm not really sure I'd want to father one either. I've got enough right now.

Will be ten years in February. But I can't, I don't think. I'd be dead if I did get sent home, I was shot, and being actively hunted.

Well, for both of your sake I hope she show up. You'd be able to have some form of peace here. Even if it's weird.

Yeah, Clint vanished earlier this year, Tony has been gone almost three years. It was just too much for me and AJ. She comes by to visit the kids, but basically lives at the farm now.
