I won't lie, I'm beginning to suspect that I'm not in SFO anymore. I knew they were doing some work on a few of their terminals but I feel like I would have remembered hearing about them opening a gate or two in space. We are in space, aren't we? Some sort of station? Admittedly, sensing ley lines within an artificial structure threw me off, it isn't something one sees often in my experience. Handy bit of magic, that. But still, we are in space, yes?

In any case, I am Zatanna Zatara, the mistress of Magic, the princess of prestidigitation, the headliner of the annual stage illusionists convention who apparently not only missed her plane to Vegas but has managed to literally fall off the face of the earth. If anyone would be so kind as to explain where we are, what is going on, and if whatever foodservice system is in place here offers a vegetarian option, I would be incredibly grateful.

Amelia is the one who brought you here. She at least looks like a little girl and has the power to bring words to life. She will have stories about you in her library and maybe she decided John might need to see a familiar face.

And the list of people who want to see John Constantine miserable continues to grow. Someone needs to let the universe know that he never needed help in that regard, he's his own worst enemy most of the time. Seeing me again is just going to make him feel guilty.

Is there a reason why she does this?

Now you are just making me curious. What do I have to do to hear that story?

I think for many she just wants to give them a chance at a better life. A lot here have tragic endings or horrible beginnings.

I promise it isn't nearly as intriguing as it may sound. Let's just say our relationship ended in a bloody way and these days when we run into each other we don't talk about it.

I can understand the attempt at being compassionate, but it doesn't sound like a better life if there has been so much loss.

Bloody way? Passionate! It costs me a great deal of willpower not to ask more questions. Be sure to expect them over a glass of whiskey one day.

I don't think she necessarily planned that.

Make it a bottle and I will welcome all questions, though I can't promise you'll get all the answers you want.

That is a comfort at least, I'm always happier assuming misguided compassion rather than malicious intentions.

A bottle it is! I might even get out the Asgardian stuff. Knocks you off your feet.

You and me both. We've had the malicious intend long enough.

Wonderful, I would adore something strong.

Is there any chance I might be able to speak with her?

Whenever you want to come over, I'll have a bottle ready you!

You can contact her through your phone. She's on the contact list.

Excellent, allow me to claim a room and take some time to refresh myself into being fit company, after that I will get in touch.

Would she agree to see me in person?

Wonderful. I'm looking forward to it.

She might. She is usually very nice. She helped my Dad with something too.

That must be nice, having your father and your son here.

I'm one of the lucky ones. I've got both parents, a daughter, a cousin and a grandmother. As well as a fantastic man and my son's friends. It was my uncle who died.

But I'm not like you. I'm the descendant of people Amelia fetched from their worlds. I've only ever known a life like this. Though the station is new. Before that we lived on an island.

I'm sorry to hear about your uncle, but it is good that you are surrounded by family. It is also good to know that if I end up staying for longer than I intend the possibility of a future here isn't wholly out of reach. I had only recently retired from saving the world every week, perhaps this is just a more extreme version of retirement for me.

Thank you. You can certainly have a long-term life here. Sometimes it holds quite a few surprises.

I think seeing this as a sort of retirement is a good way to look at it. You might still occasionally be required to save the world though.

I'm certain it does.

Oh, I probably wouldn't know what to do with myself if I wasn't.

Thank god! Here I thought you were content with normal. How boring would that be?

I can assure you, I have never been accused of being content with normal. Then again, what would constitute normal here? Strange doors, aliens, weird magic. I was going to say that doesn't sound normal to me, but with my life that would be a lie.

A valid point! Having a job in an office is about as extraordinary as it gets around here

Are there people who came from office jobs? I can't imagine what their adjustment period was like.

Most did not but we do have some who led rather human lives. Lacey who is running the diner, for example, already worked in one back home. Then there is Hemingway who you are stated talking to. He is, well, you know who he is, right?

There was a rather famous Hemingway back home, certainly he isn't that Hemingway.

If your Hemingway was a writer who wrote stories about old men struggling with fishing, then we have a winner.

Very much so. Amelia likes to bring back the dead especially. Expect for my kids, every single member of my family is dead for someone else who is here. Amelia's little world of family reunions.
