hello

I like Cuban Cuba. It is very warm.

When must I do the working now? should I look for work?

Tommy helps is helping me with English words. I hope you know my words understand me best better now. I speak and read the language on the walls of the station.

[That is an improvement! Keep at it. I'm glad you are enjoying Cuba, it is very nice.

When the doctors think you are well enough we can find you something to do. There is no rush.]

[Tommy is correcting me. I am teaching him, his pronunciation is terrible.

I have never not-worked, Izzy. This "well enough" idea is very strange.]

[They never heard it until Tom and arrived recently, only read it.

This isn't the factory Kelan, there's no overseers ready to punish you. We aren't so desperate for labor that it can't wait.]

[My pronunciation of your English is also terrible. And I do not know what people are saying in Cuba, so I stay quiet.

I know this in my head, but I wake up thinking I am still there and if I close my eyes I expect to hear it. It will take time for all of me to escape, I think.]

Use translation app, please? I do not know your words for this.

[I worked in the Factory. I worked in the Pits, extracting raw materials, and survived. I mostly worked with the chemicals because my people can breathe the fumes and survive more than other people. And sometimes I was allowed to work in the manufacturing sector, where I survived with all my limbs intact. I am a good worker, and I work hard. The Factory is not a good place to work, I know this, but I still did my best.]

That is disconcerting. I'm glad you survived intact. Let me see how well this translation app works.

[You're a much hard worker. You don't have to here. We all share things. You can choice the job you like. No one will make you.]

How'd I do?

You're not doing horribly.

Hello, Kelan. I'm Tony. I'd really like to learn to speak your language.

[Hello. I'm Desmond. I see that you mentioned mining for raw materials? Chemicals? Do you know what they are? What it was called? Or what it was for?

Apologies, I know that is a lot of questions. ]

[Hello, Kelan.

Some time ago, I was accidentally or rather unwillingly recruited by something called the DHARMA initiative. In the line of my duties there, I had a sort of an accident that involved a sudden exposure to high levels of radiation and electromagnetism. As a result, I became unstuck in time. I developed a condition they called 'temporal sickness' which involved memory problems and bleeding on the brain. I was lucky enough to find a sort of a cure before it was too late.

This is all part of a much bigger and more complicated story, but that's really the crux of the matter I think. You can ask questions, of course.

Since I arrived on the station I am starting to show symptoms of temporal sickness again, I keep losing an hour or a week, or repeating an afternoon a few times. My theory is that something about the station is keeping me from 'sticking', and I was wondering if this was a clue to what that might be.

I realise after writing all this I probably should have just said 'I was wondering if it was making me sick.'

Bloody hell, I hope this all actually translates.]

[I am sorry you are sick. I hope I am not making it worse. It translated very well.

The mining was for four different ores. I was never told their names, but I would know them on sight. One was shiny-gray, and didn't make dust. One was a dull dark gray, and it was volatile. If you hit it the wrong way, it would spark and explode, but it was only found in small lumps and never in a vein. There was a red-gold one that we couldn't get wet or it would give off fumes. And there was a yellow-gold one that was very shiny and it was very hard.

It was the same with the chemicals, they never told us their names. There were five different mixes, because the dark gray ore needed two processes. They were used in the refining of the ores. Their fumes were bad enough on their own but when they mixed with the rocks, it was poisonous to most lifeforms. Once the ores were processed, they were sent to the manufacturing sector to make components. I am sorry that I don't know more details than that. Sookie and Tom might know more. Does that help?]

[Why would you be making it worse? No, it'll be a a bit of tech or something like that, not a person. Not you. Don't worry about that.

Thank you, it helps massively. There are plenty of good people here, with a lot of expertise. I'm sure this new information will help us figure out the cause a lot more quickly.

Did you stay here on the station? Is the mine here, or near here?]

[I thought maybe the ores or the chemicals would be hurting you and since I was close to them before I was brought here, I might have made you ill.

My Gods brought me here from the Factory. I don't know where here is, but I think that it is very far from the Factory and its mine.]

Well. That probably would've been a better question for me to ask first, I think.]
