Charlie would like to invite everyone to a party plus water fight at the play park tomorrow afternoon for his 4th birthday.

Incredibly late notice because four year olds have no concept of time.

Also if anyone can bring food and snacks and drinks (non-alcoholic) and any outdoor toys or games they have lying around that would be awesome.(No doors for a while - makes throwing a party tricky.)

Am I an awful mother? I didn't have anything planned for his birthday.

Not at all, don't even think that. You concentrate on growing a human from scratch, I can manage a few balloons and a cake.

Actually, he was really happy to be allowed to chose what he wanted to do. I was just glad he picked something achievable within 24 hours. He's a good kid.

It's not like it takes a lot of concentration to grow a child, Hem. It's a pretty uninvolved thing at the beginning, at least after the nausea and vomiting stops.

He is the best. I love him so much.

Yeah, I didn't mean literally use some sort of mental concentration. Rather just don't feel like you have to worry yourself about anything much else right now. Can I get you anything? Toast?

He really is, he's such a good kid.

I'm fine, I promise. You don't have to worry so much about me. The scan's not too far away, I'm on the right vitamins. I wanna help plan my son's fourth birthday party.

Well, I can't promise that I won't worry. But in that case, make your way to party planning HQ. Aka Charlie's bedroom.

I'll bet you do.

I told Charlie you were just coming, and he literally jumped for joy and has got you a large sheet of paper and some felt tips to plan with.

You may have to negotiate for that, but you've got a better chance than blue. You might want to lower your expectations. I only narrowly talked my way out of yellow, because even he had to admit that visibility was an issue.

Yes. It was the pink one he gave you. He's now sheepishly changed it for purple. That may not save him.

Purple, huh? That's better than pink but not as good as blue. Have you tried orange?

He's telling me about how all the colors mix to make other colors, now. He thinks he's getting away with it because it's part blue. He's got me on the orange. How do you feel about red? He's willing to allow red.

He's now naming everything that is red.

Hurry up, this is a long list.

He already is an expert in colour theory? That's our boy.

I will settle for red. I can draw Fireman Sam and Postman Pat. Why are they always monosyllabic names?

Yes, he really is. It's quite impressive, even if I'm trying not to be too obviously thrilled considering he's using his knowledge to get what he wants... knowledge is power, right? Fuck, he's going to properly outsmart us both by the time he's six.

Good. You have a deal. Everybody knows his bright red van. Damn it! And I guess they're easy to say and spell? Postman Patrick?

That's a very good point, Knightly. God help us.

Don't worry. I grin and bear it.

Also I might have made a sort of postbox for his birthday, so we can all leave each other letters in it. I thought it might help him feel like he has something the baby doesn't, and be a way to talk to us without really having to talk to us.

And you know, posting things is fun.

Sweethear, you do know that he will love this idea and demand letters from Mama and Papa be given to everyone so that he can go deliver them in his bright red van? I've already heard him pretending that your damn cat is called Jess.
