Charlie and I spend a lot of time on outdoors activities, and he's getting to an age where just hanging out with his papa is getting a little tiresome.

Does anyone have children who might be interested in a sort of Scouts club? It would be good to get them socializing and learning skills that could be useful for island life at the same time.

On the same note, we got any adults who would be interested in helping to run an activity like that?

I'm Jake. If you knew me from before, I'm sorry but I don't remember.

But I live in a jungle. I can help with a lot of outdoors activities for kids, if you want?

Hey Jake, yeah I remember you. I'm Hemingway. Welcome (back).

That sounds great, I'm sure they would love that.

Irayo.

If you can think up a list of things you think the kids should learn, I'll tell you what I can help with.

All right. Although I'm sure if there's anything you've got in mind, games or lessons or anything, we can give it a go.

How old is Charlie again? I think my oldest are younger than him.

He's nearly four now. It's his birthday next Monday, actually.

My oldest are only thirty two months so it'll be a year or two before they're ready for that, but it sounds lovely.

What's that, nearly three? I get lost after about 18 months. But I'm sure we can tailor something to whatever age range shows up, if you think they'd like it.

Four months shy of it yes. Their attention span is shorter compared to a four year old I think but if you're willing to try it out we could send them along. I can help the first couple times, but after that it'd have to be Tom or one of the adult kids.

Yeah, why not. If it's not for them yet, they can just keep trying every few months or so.

No problem. Between growing up here on the island and my time in the Corps I should be able to show them plenty of things that would be useful.

If you need any boring biology lectures to explain all that nature stuff to them, I am your man. They literally put my kids to sleep.

They're not old enough to understand yet sweetheart. But your lectures do make for great bedtime stories, they always work like a charm!

Yeah, that's what you keep saying! But I swear Viv planted seeds the other day. They went into the ground and not into her mouth!

I think Stevie would like something like that. I might come along though, or send Bucky, at least the first few times. He's...a handful.

Absolutely! I think parents/guardians coming along, at least to begin with, is a great idea. Kids tend to love it when the grown ups play the games and stuff too.

Depending on the age of the children, I could teach them some basic first aid.

Wonderful! How old is Rachel now?

That's a swell idea. I know Izzy would like to come along, and Charlie has been practising bandaging (I don't know if he just likes to make me look like a mummy, but hey!)

Good grief, she's growing up! It really does. Four sounds so big. It's been a real privilege to watch him grow.

Oh yes, definitely. He's very thorough.

Oh, that's fantastic.

In fact, I wonder if we have a sort of community campfire sometime. It seems like the kind of thing that might bring unexpected people closer.
