I have a question: Did anyone announce, before they took up residence somewhere, that they were going to and where? I was under the impression that everything here was free, as long as it didn't belong to someone else first.

Compared to where I was living, even right here in the park is pretty fancy. Hell on Wheels was a canvas and floorboard city that had to be able to pick up and move as the road was built. And before that was the war. Holes in the ground or mounds of dirt where home for a good while.

Izzy

I wouldn't get my feelings hurt if you did.

No ma'am, I was going to see if the bakery or diner was doing something. I wouldn't put anyone out?

When you put it that way I suppose it makes sense.

Bohannon
You might not, but I'd feel bad.

My family is huge and ever growing, one more mouth won't make a difference. And we can get a feel for you in person Think of it as a belated welcome to the island. Maybe you can put my granddaughter at ease about your campsite.

It's been almost ten years since I had a solid roof of my own over my head.

Izzy

Well I wouldn't want to make you feel bad.

It would be rude of me to reject such an offer. I reckon I need to get my suit out and aired tonight then. See about getting a proper bath Is there anyone here that'd I'd be able to see about a shave and hair cut?

Shaving is easy. There are these things called safety razors that you can use to shave without worrying about cutting yourself, I'll volunteer my son JR to get you a package and a can of shaving cream. Even if you don't want to live in one you might think about claiming an apartment for the bathtub and laundry facilities. Hot and cold running water are wonderful things.

Haircuts are something we all pretty much have to handle ourselves or take advantage of doors when the opportunity arises, no one has opened a hair salon or barbershop so far.

It's not as easy as you'd think if I don't want to mangle my beard, I had a razor once upon a time. I just want to clean things up not get rid of it.

Yeah that was the plan. I can't imagine the look on that woman's face if I dragged a tub out here, fished water out of the pond heated it over the fire and took a bath out of doors. Might cause her to have a heart attack.

Well, you might have to live with seeing it a little long and mangy.

in that case what you want is an electric beard trimmer. Those I haven't used but JR will know where to find one.

Yes, I imagine so! Plus it sounds like a lot of unnecessary work.

As long as you're clean and presentable. You don't have to look like you walked out of a men's fashion magazine.

I don't know if I'm ever going to get used to this place.

It's not something I'm unused to. Though I usually paid someone else to do it. The whore tent always had hot baths ready, even if only a handful of them actually used 'em.

I'll be careful and toe that line then.

if Marion can adjust from living in medieval times to living here, you can adjust from the age of steam. You seem like a capable man, I'm sure you'll do fine.

I have no doubt. Why go through the effort if you don't have to?

It shouldn't be hard.

Yeah, exactly.

You're hardly old. You can't be more than forty at most.

Well fortunately you can thank modern technology for plenty of labor savings. Now all you have to do is step into the tub and turn on the tap.

I can probably rig up a stove for your tent too, shouldn't be hard.

Almost, not quite.

I spent my first night in one of the apartments on the first floor. And I did see the Davis' indoor bathroom once, running water is something to marvel at.

Yeah? You a machinist?

Then you should have another forty, easy. Maybe even sixty.

It really is.

Technomage and electrical engineer, actually. The first has led me to be something of a jack of all trades.

Another modern thing?

I think all I understood about that was the 'engineer' part. But I figure I'm a jack of all trades myself.

Modern doctors are more likely to be helpful than kill you now.

Basically it boils down to me being really good at making things that can run on magical energy or electricity. Making something that just has to handle a wood fire? Child's play.

Fewer Indians and Mormons shooting at you probably helps too.

That'll help out a whole lot.

I get the Indians, but Mormons? I wouldn't call them pacifists but you don't expect them to shoot you in the course of everyday life.

I'll send the boys out to some of the stores and see if they can find a wood burning stove for you. If they can't then I'll see what I can do. I should be able to whip something up or get Tony Stark to do it.

Yeah, I had a mess of them shooting at me when I rode onto the island. Mormons can be pretty violent.

They don't have to do that, I've been looking, I just wasn't sure where to look. So it's been systematically everywhere.

Learn something new every day.

They're island born and bred, if anyone can find something quickly they should be able to. That would be kind of a specialized item these days. I think there was a wood burning stove craze in place of fireplaces back when my parents were teenagers from what I've heard, but it hasn't been a necessity since they came up with central heating.

And they're quick, they were more shoot first ask questions later.

Alright. If you insist, and they don't mind.

I forget sometimes you were at the start of the 'Wild West'.

I do and they'll do it because I asked them to. It isn't as if anyone has a 9-5 job around here tying them up all day.

I don't know about the start of it. There's folks in California.

Is any job really 9-5?

I thought that was the gold rush but history wasn't my strongest subject in school.

Some! It's a moot point here though.

Isn't that where it started? I was working on laying rail for Union Pacific.

I can't say any of the jobs I've ever had were 9-5. So I'm alright with it.

Maybe? But in popular culture it was out between California and the Mississippi. Usually Texas and out on the plains.

9-5 wasn't really a thing for most people until the 20th century I think, but like I said history was never my best subject.

I reckon I was in the thick of it then. I was riding towards Cheyenne before I got here.

Must have been nice. Me, I've been a up at dawn, quit after sunset, worker most of my life.
