Though it's a little bit early, in honor of mother's day this year, and all of the new arrivals and soon-to-be arriving, I've decided to declare the children's ward in the hospital officially open. It's been over a year in the making and I've had a lot of help, but I think it's come together really well. With some luck we won't need to use it much, but hopefully when we do, having a place just for them will make it all a little less scary (or boring) for the kids.

To put the ward together I took over the back wing of the hospital, which we weren't using yet, so to get there you can head right to the back side of the hospital and use that entrance. I hope to make a proper sign for it at some point, but it's not hard to find.

In total there are eight patient rooms: three of them are brightly colored with beautiful murals painted by the Steves, two of them are a little bit more mature and subdued for older kids, and the last three are for labor and delivery. Each room has a patient bed, a comfortable chair and a bench that can pull out in to a guest bed, a television and connecting bathroom. The bathrooms in the maternity rooms also have large birthing tubs and, in the room itself, there is a bed side cot for baby and bigger beds to accommodate mom and her partner to be close pre- and post-delivery, if they'd like.

In addition to the patient rooms there is a small NICU and a nursery to accommodate any babies who might not be in mom's room but don't need the ICU. There's also a family waiting room with space for extended families, it's got plenty of comfortable seating as well as a few activity tables for other kids, there's also a TV, small media center and library here, with lots of kids DVDs and books for anyone in the ward to borrow.

Finally, just inside the main doors there is a big daycare room set up. Right now, I plan on being available to watch any siblings or other kids who's parents might be staying with anyone sick, but I figure that if I can get some help, it'd be a great place to set up a regular daycare center so there will be one place you can always bring kids, rather than trying to find separate babysitters. Could probably act as a preschool if we get enough help too.

I really hope this helps, and if anyone has any ideas for anything else you think we might need, there are still a few rooms that need some working on that I have no concrete plans for yet.

This looks great, Mary! You and the Steves have been busy!

If you need someone else to help with kid watching and daycare I can volunteer for a regular shift, assuming we get enough kids for that.

My dad, Stevie, Rory, Hope and Neville helped a lot too. And back when I first started I had about every guy on the island helping me gut the old ward.

Thanks! I'll see what the interest is like and let you know :)

Sorry I couldn't get it open in time for you. The chaos last month was a bit of a set back so I had planned to do it for Mother's Day, but when I noticed everyone was getting close I was trying to finish up, just didn't quite manage in time.

But, if you need a break, ever feel free to drop the boys off in the nursery and borrow a bed for a few hours. And congrats, since I haven't said yet, they're beautiful.

They're a couple of weeks early so it's quite alright. I appreciate the thought, though.

Thank you. Is it weird that I counted their fingers and toes?

It'll be there for their shots and check ups though, hopefully the colors and toys can keep them distracted.

From what I've seen, it's usually one of the first things every new mama does.

You guys did a really good job. I'm sure the kids will love it.

And my own kids are definitely different than my siblings. I never did it with any of them.

Thank you. I hope so. I've seen how scared some get coming in so hopefully it'll help.

Yeah, I'd guess parents are always a little more worried than siblings when it comes to that stuff.

Having a place that's meant just for them will help a lot.

Especially when you've got as many siblings as I do.

I'm glad you think so, it's good to know the families that will need it are liking it.

I'm sure there were some times where the novelty had worn off a bit.

You did a amazing job.

If you are able to set up a regular day care, I would really appreciate it. It can be hard sometimes to find a babysitter, especially when there's a medical emergency that requires my immediate attention.

Thank you.

I'm going to do my best. I should be around most days and as long as there's no one in the ward I'll be able to handle the day care. I'm going to talk to Stevie and see if he wants to help and then maybe get someone else or a few more to be on call when the ward gets busy. Nights might be a little harder but usually someone in the house hears the emergency broadcasts so one of us could get there.

Thank you, it'll definitely be ready whenever she needs it. And let her know that she can come anytime, she doesn't need to be in active labor or anything. The maternity rooms have lots of things that could help in the early stages too.
