Message to Arcturus, O’Hara, Darcy
Did the Becket girl tell you about Hamilton?

Should we send something? I know how miserable it can be staying in medbay with the fevers.

What fevers? I've been working.

It's curable if it's caught in time, and Cuddy knows what she's doing.

Okay. Good. Thanks.

Flowers and fruit basket?

Check if they're allowed, first. Or ask Cuddy what she would suggest?

No to fruit yes to flowers. Sorting him some pyjamas and books too. Do you want to sign your name to a card? I'll come by with it later if so.

Dr Cuddy says no to the fruit, yes to the flowers, and suggests pyjamas or large print books.

We can ask Miss Madrigal about the flowers, I'm happy to see about the pyjamas if you want to sort the reading material? You've still got that library of yours, don't you?

Very good. I'll see what I have in a large print.

My word, Crawley. Perhaps I should count myself lucky that my Lucasta is not here. She's as sweet and kind as you could imagine, I dread to think what this place might do to her.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. Familiar is best.

My sister Georgiana was here for some months, and it was a real challenge, I admit, but it is possible. He teases, but you know we'd all look out for her.

It's decent of you to say, Darcy. I know you would truly, both of you. She is a very clever and capable lady, but she is a lady, and very unsuited to a place like this. It's all very well for us men to make do as best we can in our situation here, but she deserves very much more.

Did your sister go home again?

I quite agree.

She did, and as much as I miss her company, I do think it for the best. She was able to attend my wedding before she returned, and acted as a wonderful friend and advisor to my wife at the time. Seems a lifetime ago now.

Did your wife Is your wife a lady you knew from home? There is a certain cruelty in this place and the way it brings people here who ought not to be, and sends some away while others linger. I miss my wife already, and our children, even as I know I must be prepared to spend years here, if I have to, and they are all better off at home. Yet if I went home tomorrow I would grieve for Sirius all over again there are people whose company I would miss.

It is a pity there are no weddings planned presently, we could all do with the cheer!

No, she was actually Commander Shepard's daughter. Time travel, you understand, she was not an infant at the time. Still, you can imagine how thrilled the Commander was at the match.

I am sorry. There must be many more in your position, it is funny that we've never founded ourselves a support network.

Well, if Colonel Crawley would desist with this torturously long engagement we might all have a jolly good time.

Am I understanding you correctly, then, that when Crawley finally marries, it will make him your father-in-law, after a fashion? That is a very peculiar thought.

I am sorry your wife isn't with you, either. There's nothing to be done about any of it, I suppose. The support, such as it is, is in having a friend to turn to for a distraction if the melancholy ever starts to creep in.

She wrote to me. Thoroughly dreadful business, from the sound of it. I'd go to see him but I really cannot risk passing anything on to Sirius, not at his age.

Sending something is a fine idea. I have a project I have been working on, for letter-writing. Hamilton knows of it. I might send him the materials.

Good idea. He’ll need it.

Oh, a long time. I was at death’s door though, it was a different fever. The one I told you about before. It was a team effort to save me. Loki, Bryn, and O’Hara here as well. Hopefully it won’t get as dark as that for Hamilton.

I'll put together what I can, all labelled, and you'll take it to him?

Yes, hopefully it won't be as bad as all that, and Miss Becket is exaggerating the severity. I thought I would die of the Florentine fever, but I came through, and Hamilton is young and healthy.

Yes, that’s fine by me. I’ll let you know how he’s doing once I have seen it with my own eyes.

She may just not be used to the sorts of illnesses we endured back in our time. It is a shock to the more modern citizens. I know it was a shock to Shepard at the time.

Very good. Don't put yourself at risk, alright? I know O'Hara isn't worried, but you never can be certain with these things.

That might be it. I don't know the woman well, but she is definitely the modern sort. I'll give her credit, all the same. It's a rare secretary who would go and sit by a sickbed, regardless of the time.

If it is like the yellow fever, O'Hara is right. But I understand your concern, you have the boy to think of.

Absolutely, he's lucked out with his choice there. She must either be very dedicated, or have a little fancy for him.

I'll come round with a card for you to sign once we've sorted the gifts, and collect the bits and bobs you have for him.

I hope very much that he is right, but our fever tore through the entire household within a week. I'll wait and see if anyone else I have to be cautious. Do tell him I am sorry I cannot be there.

That would explain an awful lot. I hope the girl knows he's married.

It seems better that I should send my own card, surely? I don't want him to think I consider him an afterthought.

Ah gads, I'm sorry. It's a horrible business. I'm certain that he will understand, and I will pass on your apologies.

He was wearing a ring last I saw, I'm sure. She'd have to be blind not to notice.

Sure, if you would prefer.

It's alright. I know it's nothing exceptional, I just...can't. Thank you.

There, that's something. At least if she's pining after him it's with her eyes open.

I'll have it all ready for when you arrive. Be sure you give the potions to him directly, or else to Miss Becket if you have to.
