WHO: Gwen and Merlin
WHAT: Finishing Arthur's sword
WHEN: Afternoon
WHERE: Gwen's Apartment
RATING: Wont be high
STATUS: Incomplete

Gwen was glad that Merlin could help, it made this task take a lot less time. With what skills he had, she knew they would easily have the sword finished by that night, early morning if need be. It had shocked her the first time she saw Merlin perform magic, and she soon found herself like a little child, excited to see each new thing he could do. She may be getting used to his ability, but that did not mean she was not amazed each time it happened.

She tightened the hair tie holding her hair up, brushing a few strands away. A lot had been added since Merlin was last there. She had inscribed 'Pendragon' on the blade of the sword, and the hilt had already been made just waiting for that final stage so it could be added. She picked up the hilt, smiling at the inscription of a dragon. She had tried rather hard with it, almost wanting to impress him despite knowing she didn't need to. Putting the hilt down, she brushed down her slightly looser trousers, better for the heat, before heading into the living room to wait on Merlin.

"Not at all. It looks great. I'm sure Arthur will love it." Merlin handed the hilt back over to her, and nodded as she continued to tell him what she needed him to do. Heating. Well, he'd discovered last time that the spell he knew for it wasn't nearly enough. Merlin had fun trying to improve on his magic to help her, so it actually befitted the both of them.

"I might be able to do both at once, but we'll see." He shrugged and began to rub his hands together. A murmured phrase lit the space between his fingers a pale orange. Rubbing his palms together and blowing on them lightly as if stoking a fire made the orange turn red and finally white with heat. It was a strange feeling, his hands were no warmer then they would be a simple pair of gloves, but if he put his face too close he could nearly feel the tip of his nose being singed.

"Whenever you're ready. Slow cooling again, or quick this time?"

She sighed with relief when he said it was great. She was worried that the inscriptions were something Arthur would just laugh at, but Merlin knew him pretty well. She raised an eyebrow, slightly impressed when he said he may be able to do it all at once. Her eyes went wide as he began, never getting over the fact that he could do this with little effort.

"Heat at high temperature, then cooled quickly. Please," she said quietly, before stepping back so she could watch him without being in the way.

Merlin lifted the sword carefully, holding the ends of the sword with each hand. In an instant it started to visibly heat up. It would take a minute or two to become white hot, but it was still much faster then going about it the normal way. When it was hot enough, he quickly focused on cooling it down. Cooling it slowly had been easy enough to figure out, but doing it fast (and not sure how fast exactly it needed to be cooled) made him over estimate a bit as far as the magic was concerned. The sword went from white hot to frosted over.

"Er -- Sorry. Too much." He bushed off some of the ice, and set it down. "Do I need to do it again, I'll try not to go overboard."

She tried not to laugh a bit too much when he frosted the sword over, stepping forward a little to see just how bad it was. At his question, she shrugged, reaching out to touch the ice lightly.

"Well the next step is heating at a lower temperature than before then cooling again. If you want to do that step again then that's fine. Just this next step I'll need to keep an eye on it. I'll know when it's ready."

"Alright." He set the sword down, and rubbed his palms together again to return the heat to them. It only took a minute, and he gripped the sword, trying to control how quickly it heated so Gwen would have time to spot when he needed to stop and cool it. Merlin held the sword, facing her, but at a safe enough distance that she didn't risk getting burnt.

"Say when." He brushed the sweat from his brow on his shoulder, finding it a little odd that he wasn't immune to the heat he was creating, but not all that bothered. It was just a bit warm is all..

Gwen kept her eye on the sword, glad he was keeping a certain amount of distance away from her. She noticed his movements, realising he was far too warm, and it was only then she realised just how warm it was.

"That should be it. Usually I'd check other ways, like holding it, but I can tell by looking."

She pulled off the small cardigan, shoving it over a chair, before looking at Merlin.

"if you need a break just say."

Merlin nodded and let the sword cool again. Not quite as drastically this time, no more ice forming along the blade. Still, cool enough to touch. He offered it over to Gwen, letting her inspect the sword. When she suggested taking a break he just shrugged.

"I'm fine. Just a bit warm." He leaned on the table casually, and waited for her to say what she needed done next. Merlin considered trying to make conversation, but figured he'd just end up making a fool of himself, and the whole situation awkward like he'd done with Arthur. So he was quiet, attempting to think of a safe topic.

"What else do you have to do after this before the sword is finished?"

She reached for the sword when he held it out for her, giving him a thankful smile. It was a little heavy for her, but it would be fine for Arthur. Of course, she still had to attach the hilt to it, and that may add a little weight but not enough.

"Just attach the hilt. Probably polish it up a bit, make sure it's sharp enough."

"It's amazing that you can make something like that. It's one of the best swords I've ever seen." Merlin was definitely impressed with the sword, and the fact that she could make one. Mostly impressed because he lacked any kind of talent like that. Sure he could heat the sword up, and cool it down, but that was the extent of it.

"Glad I could help with this. Tell Arthur I helped a bit would you? So it doesn't sound like I'm totally useless." Merlin laughed, only half joking about letting Arthur know he was capable of helping.

She blushed brightly at his words, glancing away. She wasn't used to compliments, and had no idea how to take them. Especially when she couldn't take all the credit. She would rather Merlin had all the credit than she did, after all it would have taken longer had he not helped.

"It's mostly down to you Merlin," she said softly, her eyes still not meeting his.

At his words, she smiled a little, looking up at him and nodding. His laugh made her wonder if he was joking, but she already had the full intention on telling Arthur when she handed the sword over.

"Of course I'll tell him."

"Hardly. I just heated it up. You could've done that with a fire." He waved it off. He didn't want credit for the sword. Merlin had been joking. In fact, he hadn't even really wanted to tell Arthur that he'd enchanted it. For some reason he felt that the blond wouldn't be totally comfortable with that fact.

"Don't tell him I enchanted it though..." He added as the thought occurred to him. Her would tell Arthur that himself, later... Or maybe just let him figure it out himself. Assuming it worked, he still had one last thing to try.

"How many more swords are you making?" He asked curiously.

"Yes and it would have taken me twice the amount of time just to complet the first stage."

She wouldn't let him just push aside any credit, and she wasn't willing to take any compliments or blame for what happened. He helped, he needed some of the thanks. And she would make sure of it.

"I wont," she said with a nod, understanding that Arthur may not take kindly to such news.

At his next question, she placed the blade down, biting her lip a little as she looked at the hilt and the blade. Smiling a little up at him, she tried not to look nervous. After all, she didn't know if he wanted to keep helping.

"Well I promised Morgana I'd get a sword to her after Arthur was dealt with. And then I was thinking Lancelot, he needs one after all. And if I had a chance and enough materials left I could make one for myself, just in case."

"I'm going to be a pro at this when we're done." Merlin smiled and took up the sword again. He had every intention of helping her with all of them. Of course, the longer they were here, the more he thought that swords were a little unnecessary and outdated in this place. Still, he supposed for Arthur and Lancelot it would provide some comfort, a piece of home kind of thing. Even if a sword did look a little strange when paired with normal clothes.

Moving the sword between his hands slowly, looking it over, he turned his attentions back to enchanting it. His eyes turned gold almost immediately, as they were one to do when he attempted any sort of magic. He was trying everything; willing the sword to be magic, spells he recalled from his book back home, enchantments he had learned here... One of them was bound to work. The combination of the three eventually resulted in briefly giving the blade a golden glow. Words and symbols shone even more brightly on the sword before fading into nothing. It had to be said, the sword had a nice shine to it when he was done.

"I think it worked..." He said, more to himself then anything, turning the blade this way and that. In the right light you could see the words and symbols of the enchantment reflected off the sword. It was a curious thing, you'd have to look specifically to spot it.

She laughed at his words, nodding. She kept watching as he continued to enchant the sword. She found it amazing, the way he focused so well on the sword and getting it prepared for the things he wanted to do. Biting her lip, her eyes fell to his, seeing the golden glow and couldn't stop being amazed. One of these days she would get used to seeing him perform magic. Just not yet. When he said it had worked, she pushed herself closer to him to take a proper look.

"Wow," she said with a grin. "So that will protect him?"

"It won't fight off people for him, but it will help...I think." Merlin turned the sword this way and that so she could see the faint markings he'd left on it. Gwen smiling and appreciating what he'd done was nice. Before they'd come here he'd worried what they would all think about his being a sorcerer.

"I could try something similar for the others' swords as well. Though hopefully they won't need to use them here." Merlin wanted to avoid having his friends be in danger, and aside from the fact that they were stolen here from their world, it didn't seem to be with malicious intent so far. Surely something with the power to bring them here could have easily just killed them if that had been the intention, but instead they were provided with lodging and money. Merlin rather enjoyed it here, though he would like to return to Camelot at some point.

She nodded a little, her eyes watching the markings appear and disappear as he moved it. She just hoped Arthur didn't notice them and question it. If she did she would make something up, she knew, but he was good at telling when she was lying. That wasn't really fair though.

"Hopefully none of us will have to. But I guess it's good to be prepared, just in case."

She really didn't want them to have to use these swords at all. Then again, Arthur already had because of her.
