WHO: John Winchester & Abby
WHAT: John Winchester goes looking for a vampire without the intention of killing it. How did his life get to this point?
WHEN: Sunday, April 7th; Afternoon
WHERE: Outside the City
RATING: PG-13
STATUS: In Progress

It was less of a request and more of a demand, to go and retrieve the small, female vampire that he'd had a run in with not long after he'd first arrived, from where she'd been hiding herself since their memories had returned. Normally, with the information that he'd been given, he would have had more than enough reason to put her down, but considering the way that he had spent his own time during that lull basically being a homeless, criminal recluse whose only interactions were with Parker, he couldn't help but feel that he had to at least give her the benefit of the doubt. None of them had been at their best during that time and to condemn one person for their actions was to condemn them all. Not something John was really against in principle, but when it included him, it was a little more sketchy as to how he could proceed like that.

So while he'd armed himself before heading out, something done mostly out of a sheer amount of common sense and the knowledge that a vampire that far removed from society would likely be in pretty bad shape by the time she was found, most of the things that he'd packed were a means of making sure that she survived the trip back. While a blood bag had been his first thought, John remember quickly enough what he'd heard. She could only drink live. Live applied to a lot of things, though, and no one had ever specified that it had to be live and human so the acquisition of a rabbit from a local pet shop had been what he'd gone with in the end. It wasn't exactly the most refreshing option, he imagined, but the idea of sacrificing a rabbit didn't grate on him nearly as much as some other animals might. They were technically food in a lot of places, after all.

It didn't make much difference to the rabbit whether it was a vampire or a Frenchman who did the eating, if you asked him.

So that was how he set out of the city, taking the directions that he'd been provided by the young Ms. Suresh, and figuring that if he didn't find her by the time the moon was high in the sky, she'd more than likely find him. John just hoped he was quicker.

Abby had noticed the rabbit but hadn't really paid it much mind until John drew attention to it. Even still, she did little more than snort softly despite having to admit - if only to herself - that she did appreciate his foresight. Although she was pretty sure he had only brought the animal as an attempt to keep himself from becoming the food, it was still nice. Even if it didn't help her in the slightest.

"I can't eat animals." Pausing, Abby glanced back toward him with a small, humorless smile. "Other than humans, I mean." Slowly, she turned to face him directly. Studying him for a long moment, she finally added simply, "If you're here to kill me, I'm not going to fight you."

And there it was. Spoken in a weary tone, with arms hanging by her sides and a look of utter despondence on her face, Abby looked every bit as defeated by life, and her situation, as she currently felt.

"I'm not here to kill you," John said, the words coming out with a bit of a huffed sigh. It wasn't so much resignation in his voice as it was exasperation. He hadn't gone after her since that night. He'd even let her go after the mix of it, so why she thought he had traveled all this way to kill her when she was obviously already doing that to herself was beyond him. "I'm here to bring you back," He said, raising a hand to rub at his face. He could barely believe he was doing this, but there was a mix of emotions in him that were pushing him to do it.

That and the thought that Molly was going to flay him if he didn't bring her back.

"You've been out here long enough. More than. People are starting to miss you," He said, a slight frown crossing his features. "A lot."

Okay, Abby definitely hadn't expected that. Blinking, her brow furrowing a bit, she stared at him in obvious confusion for a few seconds. He was there to take her back to the city? That didn't make any sense. She was about to point out as much, too, when he continued. Suddenly, things made sense again.

"Somebody sent you to get me," she said flatly. She wasn't sure who, although she had her suspicions, but that much at least was obvious. After all, he certainly wouldn't have come out here of his own accord. Not to be nice, of all things. Not for someone, something, like her. And considering what she'd done, how easily she'd lost control, she couldn't say she really blamed him.

Sighing softly, she shook her head. "No," she stated after a second, the word softly spoken but still firm. "I'm not going back." Her eyes flashed, for a split second, as she caught his scent in the air. Nostrils flaring, Abby clenched her hands into fists to stave off the urge she felt to leap on top of him and rip his throat out. She could practically see the blood pumping in his veins, without even bothering to look.

"You should go, though," she tacked on in a shaky voice, clearing her throat slightly in an attempt to compose herself. It didn't work very well. "Now, Mr. Winchester, you need to go now," she added. "It isn't safe for you here."

Shit. John wanted to flee the second that those words crossed her lips. It was a horrible idea to press a vampire who hadn't fed for awhile. Their control was bad enough even when they were full. He didn't want to think what one who was half starved could do given the chance. Backing up a few steps, making it obvious that he understood the threat, he continued to linger anyway, taking a slow, deep breath. "Someone sent me. So? I'm a big boy. I could have said no just as easily as I could have agreed," He said, a hint of tension in his voice. "But I'm here. And there's no reason for you to stay out here. Shit happens. People die. That's life."

It was a simplistic summary of existence, but it was the one thing that had kept him sane for a long time. Sometimes there just was nothing that you could do to stop that carnage that existed around you. Even the carnage you created was something out of your control. Survival was the name of the game, and sometimes survival required you to do what you least wanted in order to continue to live.

"And I know it's not safe," John said. "But it's not going to be anymore safe for me back in the city if I return without you. So what's the point in leaving when I'm going to be gutted either way?"

He really wasn't going to leave. Abby stifled a frustrated snarl and fought the urge to either lash out at him, in order to force him to leave, or simply flee herself, in order to get away from him. She had a feeling neither action would work very well. He seemed to be about as stubborn, if not even more so, than she was, and he was one of the best hunters from his reality. If anyone would be able to track her, if she fled, it would be him.

So, rather than try either extreme, she settled for just discussing things as rationally as she could manage. Her tone was still strained, and definitely held undercurrents of weariness, when she finally said, "No one is going to gut you if I don't come back. Elijah knows why I left and Molly can guarantee I'm still... here." She didn't say alive, because she didn't feel that way. Not anymore. For a while, in Colligo, she had, but that had ended the second she'd realized how easily she could lose what made her her.

Glancing briefly at the rabbit in the cage, a flicker of a smile crossed her features. Her expression was once again carefully neutral - or, as neutral as she could make it - when she looked back to the man still standing there. It would be so easy, her mind whispered. Just a few steps, too fast for him to follow. Overpowering him wouldn't even be hard.

Sucking in a sharp breath she didn't really need, Abby took a step backward. Away from him. The part of her mind that yearned for his blood screamed in protest but she ignored it. "I don't even know who I did it to," she managed to say once she was sure she had regained full control. Her stomach ached, her entire body hurt, but she was no longer envisioning attacking him. That was as good as it was going to get. Licking her dry and cracked lips, she continued speaking. "It was just some man. A well-dressed man who wasn't on my list. And I don't know how many he bit, either. Or how many they bit." She fixed him with a positively dangerous look. "But I do know that, if any of them had family, they don't anymore. Because that's how my kind is."

Maybe, if she couldn't convince him to leave, she could convince him to do what he'd told her he'd do, if she ever screwed up. At least that way, it would finally be over.

John could tell what she was trying to do. As much as he felt his stomach lurch at the idea that the city was filled with vampires now, ones who would have slaughtered entire families given the chance, he knew that it was likely not true. He would have noticed that many bodies dropping. There would have been some alarm raised at even the police department that tended to ignore those types of things. There would have been something, but instead, it had been mostly silent. Whatever poor bastard she had forgotten to kill must have burst into flames in the sunlight and not passed it on to anyone else.

"We would have noticed if something like that had started," John said, a frown creasing his features. "Something would have been done. But there hasn't been anything. No mass hysteria, no extreme slaughters, nothing like you describe. Whatever happened seems to have corrected itself so there's no reason for you to stay out here. Not when you know who you are now and can control it. I mean, I should have been dead the second I got within sensory distance of you. But I'm not. So that's got to be something."

He wasn't going to do it. As Abby listened to John's response, and especially took note of his clear lack of an attempt to attack her, that was the primary thought going through her mind. Unless she launched herself at him, he wasn't going to kill her. In fact, knowing her luck, he probably wouldn't even do it then. Which, really, made absolutely no sense to her. What had happened to the hunter who had tracked her down before? Why wasn't he doing it now?

Not wanting to really know the answer, mostly because it didn't matter, Abby just sighed softly and dropped her gaze. "We had a deal," she finally said, slowly peering up at him. There was a flash of anger in her eyes as she took a step toward him, hands clenching and unclenching at her sides. "You said you'd deal with me, if I ever killed someone not on that list." Okay, so he might not have said those words, exactly, but the insinuation had certainly been there. That was what mattered as she took another step closer, her gaze narrowing.

"I killed someone who wasn't on the list so do your part before I do it again!"

The last words came out in a voice that was much deeper than her normal one. It was the same voice she used to use when Thomas wasn't able to bring home blood for her, back home. It served as a warning that her temper was frayed, to the point of nearly snapping, and that she was losing control. Normally, she would excuse herself at that point but here... here that wasn't an option. However, before she could do something else - such as actually attacking the man she was advancing toward - fate (or maybe it was Asaph, she wasn't sure anymore) intervened.

With a singular shake of the ground, a large, neon-colored worm burst through the dirt at her feet. With a mouth filled with razor-sharp, pointed teeth, it immediately locked on to the only two warm-bodied presences in its vicinity: the rabbit, and John. Unfortunately for the creature, while it was fast, Abby was faster. And with a loud snarl, partially from frustration and partially from pure fury at having something else intrude on her solitude, she spun toward the worm and punched it as hard as she could. It slid back a few feet, landing at the water's edge, then laid there, clearly dazed.

Quickly, Abby looked back to John, fully intending on telling him to run... only to sense the worm strike out behind her. Before she could turn back, teeth were sinking into her side and she was suddenly airborn, being yanked back by the creature's iron-clad bite. The last thing she saw before she was dragged down, into the water, was another worm surging up from the ground where the first one had appeared moments earlier.

She just hoped, for his sake, that John hadn't actually come all the way out there without a weapon because he definitely was going to need one, now.
