Entry tags:god, john winchester

WHO: John Winchester & God
WHAT: Emmy wants to have a conversation with John. John hopes he hasn't backed himself into a smiting corner.
WHEN: January 24th; Evening
WHERE: The Roadhouse
RATING: PG
STATUS: In Progress

It would not have been an exaggeration for John to say that he was scared shitless as he stepped into the Roadhouse and quietly sought out a booth to settle down into. The thought of having a conversation with God because he'd threatened one of her kids, when he knew all too well just how angry a protective parent could get, was enough to leave him feeling sick to his stomach. A protective parent with the ability to blink him out of existence was not something that he really wanted to think too hard about. So as he slipped into the booth, John waved over one of the waiters immediately and ordered a whiskey. Beer wasn't going to cut it for this conversation. He needed something to not only steel his nerves but take away some of the barriers that might hold himself back.

He was willing to wager that God would appreciate honesty more than blind obedience, and if he was wrong, well, he would feel less pain if he was a bit drunk.

Hesitating as the waiter asked if he wanted anything else, John glanced across the booth before turning back to the waiter. What in the world did you order for God? Did he even bother? After a moment of silence, John waved him off with a quiet assurance that if the person joining him wanted anything, that he could always come back later. Better to wait and let Her order for Herself than guess wrong.

Jack didn't bother with John, once it was clear he wasn't going to be interfering. His only focus was on Meri. This had always been the case, Jack thinking about her above anything else. But before it had been as his sister. His twin. Now, it was as his target. A threat to be eliminated. And while Meri was definitely a fighter, no question, he was just as good and didn't have any sort of sentimentality holding him back. He knew Meri would kill him if she had to, but she would always try to save him first. He didn't have to worry about that. All he wanted was to see her dead, and he'd do whatever it took to see it through.

He caught Meri's arm twisting it at an uncomfortable angle and kicking out hard at her ribs. A moment later, his other arm was wrapped tightly around her throat as he did his best to choke her. He wasn't enjoying this, since he felt no emotional connection to what was happening, but he was proud not to be failing Loki. It was something at least. He tightened his arm, looking down at her. "This would be much easier if you'd stop struggling. You're never going to win, Mer. It was stupid to think we ever would."

Meri wasted no time in stretching her arms out, pressing her thumbs into his eyeballs as hard as she dared without actually rupturing them. When reflex dictated he jerk his head away from her, she dropped her arms down and managed to break free of the chokehold. Twisting away, out of his grasp, the knife was back in her hand in the blink of an eye and she was striking out, aiming for his side much as he'd done to her.

Enough was enough. It was time to end this, one way or another. Meri eyed him warily, her hardened heart breaking at the knowledge that there was every chance she was going to have to kill her twin. No one should have to do such a thing. No one.

But hope wasn't quite lost yet. Spotting a chair out of the corner of her eye, Meri turned toward it and yanked it into the air. Spinning on her heel, she brought it down directly on top of Jack, still holding on tightly as it shattered into large splinters in every direction.

Jack swore as she nearly took out his eyes, then jerked out of the way of her knife, making it so it sliced his side instead of stabbing deeper. His expression was dangerous as he went to grab his sword, ready to end this. Playing had been fun, but he was getting tired of it. There was no reason to drag this out. No reason not to just kill her. He didn't want to admit it, but part of him was resisting. Part of him rebelled at his orders. That was probably why Meri was still alive. But he was a good soldier. He would come through and do what he had to. He wouldn't fail.

Then, before he could react, the chair was hitting him hard, striking him in the head and knocking him to the ground. He lay there, dazed, for a long moment, as something broke inside him. Everything came rushing back and suddenly it was hard to breathe. Loki had done that to him. Loki had done the one thing he'd never thought he would do. And he'd tried to kill his sister. He'd nearly succeeded. He felt sick with shame and couldn't bring himself to move, just laying there curled in on himself and shaking as the full impact of what he'd done hit him.

Clint had always stressed that the people controlled by Loki weren't at fault, but he knew their mentor had never stopped blaming himself for his actions. And it was the same for Jack. He would never blame anyone else, but he would always feel guilt for his actions under Loki's brief control. Because he should have fought back. Meri was his sister. His twin. That should have been enough to fight off some stupid stick. He couldn't quite take the guilt and the betrayal and every other sick, painful emotion he was feeling, and he half wished it hadn't worked so he wouldn't have to feel like this.

As soon as the chair splintered, Meri dropped the pieces she held and drew her crossbow. In a second, she had an arrow aimed down at her brother. At this distance, there was zero possibility of a miss. With a slow exhale, she observed him for a moment. When she spoke, her voice had a tremor to it.

"Jack?" She didn't dare hope. Not really. But a small part of her wanted to, very much. She didn't lower her weapon, though, finger still hovering over the trigger as she tried to determine if he was playing a trick on her or if he'd finally broken free.

Quickly, she cast a glance toward John. Opening her mouth to say something, she stopped as a loud siren began to sound. "Sonofabitch," she swore as she turned back to Jack. "Time to go," she announced flatly.
