WHO: Benny Lafitte & Ellen Harvelle
WHAT: Benny came across a bunch of straggling locals who were somehow banged up but still alive. He took them to the one place nearby that he knew might actually be able to help.
WHERE: The Roadhouse
WHEN: January 6th; Afternoon
RATING: PG-13
STATUS: In Progress

EXTERMINATE!

The wisk of the Dalek laser overhead as enough to get Benny eager to leave the area. He'd patched up the locals that he'd come across as best as he could, but there was only so much that a vampire with limited supplies on his person could do especially when they were pinned down in a virtual warzone. "Go, go, go!" Benny shouted, shoving each of the locals that he'd found out across the area that he'd pointed out as the most sheltered for them to escape through. The second that the last was out, Benny turned to follow them, barely dodging another laser blast as it winged past him.

The jerk and evaporation of a body in front of him would have stalled him if he had been a weaker man, if he hadn't seen hundreds of people fall, if he hadn't killed many of them himself, and the shout of his voice to keep going to the others as the showed the signs of hesitating rang out over the shrill cries of the Daleks that they were leaving behind. They'd lost one. They'd lost one, but Benny had figured that he would be lucky to get out of there and out into the open with half the group, much less only one death, and as he shouted out directions, herding the locals down the street and around a corner as the Daleks gave chase, he couldn't help but think that he'd actually done pretty well as far as things went.

The Roadhouse wasn't the closest building to where they had run off. There were plenty of others buildings that they could have hidden in along the way, but Benny knew out there that they would have been as much sitting ducks as they had been in the alleyway that he'd first stumbled across them crouching in. But as he approached the perimeter of the building, Benny felt a quiet relief flood into him. They would be safe here. And he could at least rest for awhile before heading back out.

All-in-all, as far as invasions went, Ellen knew that she and hers weren't doing too bad. They'd managed to keep the Roadhouse from being overrun, had set up a perimeter within the first few hours of Christmas morning and had only perfected the art of keeping it well-armed at all times since. They were fully prepared, which probably said a lot about them, but at the moment all Ellen cared was that it said they were ready, willing, and most importantly able, to stand their ground if it came right down to it.

Fortunately, though, it hadn't come to that just yet. Which was good, considering the number of people they were helping. Locals and nonlocals alike, everyone pitching in however they saw best, it worked and Ellen was damn proud that everyone was on board with making it happen. Her attention was drawn from the main bar area - filled with people who were injured in some way, with the lesser injured helping the more severe was best they could - to the doors as they opened and a group was ushered inside.

Ellen was crossing to them in a heartbeat, taking charge of the situations solely by being present. She ran a quick but thorough eye over the bedraggled group. "You and you, over there," she nodded two of them away, to another triage area, then looked to a few others. "You guys, go toward the bar. And you three, stay put." Then she turned her gaze to Benny, offering him a bit of a smile.

"Fancy seeing you here," she said with a nod. "Where'd you run into the trouble?" And, more importantly, had it followed him.

"About six blocks over," Benny said as he stepped into the bar, turning around to peer out the door. He thought he'd lost the majority of them two blocks from their origin point and dropped the rest after block four, but he'd been out enough the past few weeks to realize that the Daleks could be tricky if they were given the opening to be. "I gave them the run around and dropped them all off after block four," He said, glancing back at over at Ellen as he shouldered his shotgun. It wasn't the sort of weapon that he was used to wielding, but in this atmosphere, it did way more damage than any kind of knife. "But I can get back out there, make sure that there isn't anything hiding and waiting for a weak spot."

Ellen had been tolerant enough with him, for someone with such a strong hunter history, the last thing he wanted was to be the one that brought down danger on the one safe house really left in the city outside of the apartments. And it was hard to say whether those were really secure or if there was just little reason to go after them when people were still out in the open for them to grab.

"I lost one of them coming in," Benny said, glancing at the group before turning his attention back to Ellen. "But considering what was after them, that seemed like pretty decent odds. Plus the ones that aren't too badly banged up can help," He said, extending his shotgun to one of the ones that she'd asked to stay there. He could only assume that was what she'd called the out for. After all, any hands in a crisis situation were better than no hands at all. "If you want me to show them the rounds."

Ellen shook her head. "Keep your gun," she said, motioning for someone to bring some spare weapons to the few locals standing there. "You and I are going to walk it, make sure nothing followed. Those things are sneaky." She made for the door, figuring he'd get it together and follow or he wouldn't.

The air was cool, and there was a slight breeze as she stepped outside. Ellen gripped her shotgun, letting her gaze slide across the perimeter out of reflex. She paused when she came across someone else, offering a tip of her head before she turned in the other direction and began to move silently along.

There was nothing. Silence. That was all. Just silence. It was quiet. Too quiet. She didn't like it. "You notice-" she was half-turned when a voice began shrieking its attack on the man she'd just seen keeping guard.

"EXTERMINATE!"

Before Ellen could react, there was a low hum then the sound of a laser, followed by a thump. She winced then backed into the shadows, motioning for Benny to do the same.

Taking his gun when it handed back to him, Benny turned on his heel to follow Ellen as she stepped out of the safety of the bar and into the danger zone. They were keeping things at bay, but Benny couldn't help but wonder just how many close calls that they had had doing so, or even how many people that they'd lost keeping the injured that they were sheltering safe. Shifting his shotgun as they turned around the perimeter, pointing it out at their surroundings, he couldn't help but notice how any noise had seemed to fall away. Even the scuffle that you would expect to hear from the raids a few blocks away wasn't loud enough to overhear. Benny was sure that they would have fallen back, taken on other targets, unless--

The sound of the Dalek mechanical voice hit his ears a second later, his gaze locking with Ellen's as they fell back into the shadows. He'd brought them right to the door, even if it did only sound like one at the moment, it could easily double if they didn't take it out before it called the others.

Cocking his shotgun, Benny pointed out to the open area. It would help if they pulled it off the bar, directed its fire elsewhere, and even as vulnerable as he was to the Daleks' lasers if they were able to get a bead on him, he would still move quick enough to stay one step ahead if he kept alert. Maybe if he did, Ellen would manage to take it out. All he had to do was pull its attention to that area first. Raising his shotgun, Benny aimed at the building across the street, glancing back at Ellen to make sure that she was all right with him taking this course, before firing.

If Ellen had her picks of who she wanted to be stuck beside during a fight with an alien who was damn hard to kill and hell bent on killing them first, a vampire wouldn't have been on that list. Nevermind that this particular vampire was friends with Dean, or even that he did seem - so far, at least - to really walk the line between his nature and what was right. The fact was, Benny was a vampire and Ellen had been in the business of hunting for too long to give up her issues with his kind overnight. She didn't trust them, didn't trust him, but damn if she didn't have her back against the wall with no clear way out without relying on him.

Fortunately for both her, as well as Benny, Ellen might have her reservations, but she was far from stupid. Also, she really didn't want to die. Which meant that, when Benny made his gesture to indicate his plan, she did the only thing she could really do. She shoved aside all of her doubts about him, ignored the small voice in her head whispering that he was going to bolt and leave her there to fend for herself, and gave a nod of agreement.

As soon as he was on the move, Ellen was as well. Not following after him, of course, but rather pushing away from the wall and stepping just enough around the corner to line up her shot. At that moment, as far as she was concerned, everything seemed to drop into slow motion. She could see Benny hauling ass out of the corner of her eye, saw the Dalek swivel in his direction and begin screeching its trademark call, and then finally, finally heard the sound she'd been waiting for.

The low hum of the thing's weapon about to fire.

Knowing she only had one shot, and that the odds were stacked about as far against her as they could be, Ellen exhaled slowly, lined the Dalek's eyestalk up in her sights and, in that instant before it fired - which was pretty much the only time she'd ever found it to have any sort of weakness to exploit - she pulled the trigger.
