Who: Spike and Buffy Summers
What: Spike has some explaining to do...again
When: Backdated to Tuesday, March 27th. Evening.
Where: Buffy's apartment
Rating: PG probably
Status: In Progress

Spike knew that he shouldn't take his frustrations out on Buffy, but after losing her so many times, Spike wasn't sure he could handle it again if he got close to her only to have Asaph send her back again. He didn't know what it was about Buffy that caused their Almighty Host to constantly bring her to Colligo, only to send her back shortly after, but it had already happened at least three times in the almost year that he had been there and he couldn't handle it if it happened again. He didn't know how many more times he could have this same conversation either. Despite knowing that Buffy deserved an explaination as to why he never contacted her after being resurected, Spike was getting tired of reciting the same old story; he was starting to think that maybe he should just write it all down like Caroline had with the Mega Explaination post for Colligo Newbies. Either way, he had a lot of explaining to do whether he wanted to or not and deep down, he knew that he couldn't stay away from Buffy for long if she was in the same city.

Reaching her building, Spike let himself in and headed up to her floor, reminding himself, as he reached her door, that despite the fact that the last couple of months had been some of the best of his life, this was a new Buffy and the slate was pretty much wiped clean again.

Spike knew that Buffy was a smart woman and considering how long he'd loved her and the fact that everyone knew it, it probably wouldn't take her long to figure out that they had been together the last time she had been there, but he was pretty sure that she wanted to hear it from him. Knowing he had a lot to explain, he allowed her to lead him inside and remained standing as she sat down, "You've known about that bloody kiss for half an hour and you're already obsessed with it." He made a mental note to give John a piece of his mind next time he saw him.

Having done this twice already, Spike knew exactly where to begin, "The reason I didn't let you know that I was alive was because I wanted you to remember me as a Champion." He crossed his arms over his chest and shrugged, "That and good ole' Rupert wouldn't tell us where you were." Yes, he was throwing Giles under the bus; would anyone expect anything less from Spike?

"I need something to obsess over to keep me from going crazy over the fact that I have been kidnapped to a place where I've been before and I don't even remember it. It's a new twist for you." She laughed a little, still trying to comprehend all that Faith told her, and just the simple fact that she was here at all.

She had to be a little more serious. "You could have found me if you would have wanted to. Why would you want me to remember you burning up in the Hellmouth. It's only been a few months since you died." Her lips pursed, and she patted the seat beside her.

"How long was it before you came back?" She wasn't really ready to forgive him but she knew that she would eventually. "You can also tell me about us."

Oh, if only Buffy knew how not new kissing men was, but he certainly wasn't going to fill her in on that tidbit. That was one part of his life that she didn't need to know about. "No, I couldn't." As she patted the seat beside her, Spike finally moved and sat beside her, "Angel was the head of Wolfram and Hart. Rupert didn't trust him. We went all the way to Italy cause we heard you were there and Junior Watcher gave us the run around." Spike now knew that Buffy had never actually been in Italy with The Immortal and Andrew had lied about her and Dawn's whereabouts. "At first I wanted you to remember me as a Champion, but then no one would tell us where you were." Spike snorted slightly, "And then LA went to hell in a hand-basket. Literally."

He wanted to reach out and take her hand, but he refrained for the time being, "I was in LA for about a year. Never thought Caveman Brow and I could spend that much time together without one of us winding up a pile of dust. Guess we surprised ourselves there." Spike continued to fill Buffy in one the year he'd spent in LA, including how he'd been incorporeal for awhile and of course, he made sure not to forget the part where Angel had been turned into a puppet; he must have told that story to everyone he knew by now.

Finally, the only thing left to fill her in on was the last few months. "So, you know then? Who was it? Red or Faith?" He knew that it had to have been one of them who had told Buffy that they'd been together and honestly, if made it a little easier to tell her if she already knew.

Buffy sighed and put her hand on his. "You were a Champion. I don't know how you were brought back, but in that fight, you were a Champion. Being back doesn't make you less." She looked up and him and smiled. "I'm really glad to see you, even if I plan to find a way back to Dawn, or maybe she could come here. We've been in Denver the whole time. Can you imagine leaving California for that cold. I didn't have winter clothes at all."

She wondered how Spike felt about not being able to find her. Part of her was glad that he had been with Angel, even if she would have loved to be a fly on the wall for some of those conversations. "I can just see you two as besties, going out for morning coffee, fighting the bad guys together, and hanging out after work. Should I be jealous?" It was really awkward, and she wasn't sure if she wanted them in the same room actually.

"Faith told me about us. I kind of made her. That was the message I got when you knocked." She shrugged, not willing to say much either way, because other than that, she didn't know any details. Given their history, it was easy to believe. If it was someone like Giles, gross.

Spike knew now that he'd been crazy in thinking that Buffy would think him any less a champion if she'd known he was alive, but at that time it was what he'd thought was the right thing to do. Of course now he'd wished that he'd gone looking for her once he'd become corporeal instead of hanging out with Angel. Sure, they had been able to tolerate each other and he'd gotten to see Angel as a puppet and even kick his ass good and proper, but he'd also had his hands cut off and had come to care about Fred only to watch her die and watch as Illyria had worn her body as a halloween costume. "I'm well aware of that now." When she mentioned wanting to find a way back, he felt a pang in his chest and was sure that it showed in his blue eyes just how much it hurt to hear her say that; if there was one thing Spike hated at times, it was how obvious his emotions were when it came to Buffy, "Lil Bit has been here before too and there's no way home, unless our host wants to send you back."

As Buffy went on about him and Angel, Spike quirked a brow, "More like nighttime coffee, considering we would have been dust before we reached the nearest Starbucks if we went in the morning." Speaking of the sun, Spike's eyes slid towards the window, he'd been there long enough, that the sky was just beginning to lighten, but the sun wasn't quite above the horizon yet, "I want to show you something." He said, as he brought his gaze back to Buffy and gripped her hand.

Their whole relationship had been full of twists, and it wasn't always easy. She couldn't deny feeling something for him, especially after watching him burn as a champion, but she had yet to figure it out, and really wasn't sure that now was the time. He seemed genuinely happy to see her. There was a way that he looked at her that made him seem - sensitive. "Would you have ever come to find me? I know that bonding with Angel must have been high on your to-do list."

Buffy looked towards the window when he did. He couldn't be in the sun. The rules were so stupid. He didn't seem to be in a hurry. "What is it?" She couldn't begin to guess, at least not in this place.

"I did tell you that we went to Italy, didn't I? We were told that you were there with a man known as The Immortal who, in the past, has screwed over both Angel and myself." Ok, so that was an understatement, but knowing that Buffy hadn't really been there and that it was one of her decoys, well it didn't make Spike hate The Immortal any less. "I like to think that, had we not wound up fighting a horde of demons in an attempt to prevent LA from being plunged into Hell, then I would have decided to come after you." He tilted his head and smirked, "White horse and all."

Spike watched as she glanced towards the window then stood, knowing she must have been pretty confused, and pulled her to her feet, "It's a surprise." He led her towards the door, then out into the hall towards the elevator. He knew what her reaction would be, because this was Buffy and it wasn't as if her reaction was going to be different once she realized that he was attempting to take her outside. Reaching the elevator, he pressed the up button and waited for the doors to open before pulling her inside and pressing the button for the top floor.

"You told me that, but a girl likes to be chased. A lot." The white horse would be a nice touch, even if she had given up romantic fantasies that never fit her life. Princesses weren't slayers, knights weren't vampires. She would still take the white horse.

She had no idea where they were going and seemed a little concerned at the direction the elevator took. "You really don't need to scald yourself to prove anything to me. It wasn't so much fun the first time around."

"You never much cared when I chased you before." Spike knew that things had been different then; he hadn't had a soul and Buffy hadn't trusted him, thinking that he only said he loved her to try and get close and ultimately kill her, which had never been the case when if she had driven him crazy and sometimes he had thought it'd be easier if she wasn't around, but he could never actually bring himself to do anything about it, because in the end, he loved her.

As the elevator door opened on the top floor, he led her towards the door that led to the roof and glanced over his shoulder at her, but he didn't say anything; instead, he let go of her hand, opened the door and started up the stairs, knowing that Buffy's curiosity would cause her to follow him.

"You just don't know that I did notice, and I did care." Maybe there was a time when she didn't, but there was a mutual need. There was always a reason that she wouldn't kill him.

Her hand swept for his but she missed as he headed up the stairs. "Spike, are you sure this is a good idea. I'm starting to have flashbacks." She remembered sitting on a bus, thinking about him and then looking into the crater later. Giles was talking about Cleveland, but she had wanted a normal life. Now she could only follow him and hope he knew what he was doing.

"Could have fooled me," He wasn't the least bit upset or bitter over the way anything had happened back in Sunnydale, because he knew why she had been so very reluctant to believe him when he'd continuously told her that he loved her, but he couldn't pass up the opportunity to tease her just a little. It had been weeks since he'd last seen her and even though she wasn't exactly the same, she was still Buffy. Still his Buffy whether she knew it yet or not.

Reaching the top of the stairs, Spike turned around to face her and placed his hand on the doorknob, "Do you trust me?" He knew that probably sounded extremely corny, but it was a serious question.

Buffy rolled her eyes. He was right, kind of. There were times when she didn't want to be chased, and times where she felt guilty about Spike, but used him, and times where - it didn't matter now. He had died a champion and she had felt it deeply. That mattered. Who cared how it started?

When they reached the door, she stopped just behind him, pulling him back a little. The question took her off guard. "Why wouldn't I trust a champion?" She didn't want to watch him burn again. This place was weird. Maybe it had done something like that. "Do it."

Spike smirked at her and reached out to run his fingertips along her cheek before turning back towards the door and pushing it open, the early morning sunlight illumitating the stairwell as Spike stepped out onto the roof and took in the view of the rising sun before turning back to face Buffy, one brow quirking and his arms spreading out at his sides, "Surprise." Despite the fact that he hated when Buffy was sent home then brought back with no memory of being there, he couldn't help but get a little bit of a thrill when he got to show her that he could go out into the sun now without going all dusty.

He had told her that he loved her many times before, and she had not let that feeling in. Their relationship was unhealthy, he couldn't really love her, name the reason. She wasn't even sure if she had meant it before his death, but she had meant it after even if she hadn't said it out loud. If they started again, they would be on a different path. She opened her eyes to see him in the sun.

"No, Spi - ." She grabbed for him reflexively but he was out there already. She started to smile, realizing that he wasn't becoming the human torch.

"Oh my God, look at you." She walked towards him, putting an arm around his waist. "That's it, now we can go tanning together."
