WHO: Lucifer & Meri Winchester
WHAT: Lucifer stops by to see how the Winchester family is handing the Cas emotional rollercoaster and finds himself a with a unique opportunity. Parental distraction.
WHEN: March 27th; afternoon
WHERE: The Winchester House
RATING: PG
STATUS: In Progress

It really was just morbid curiosity that drove him from his own apartment that afternoon and down through the streets towards the Winchester home. Granted, he could have been there in a false, but the walk let him settle his thoughts and prepare himself lest he be greeted with a less than friendly reception. But by the time he made it to the house, it had become rather obvious to Lucifer that he wasn't going to be greeted at all. The bickering echoing out of the house was all too obvious, but as he neared the yard, a familiar sight greeted him and Lucifer raised a hand to wave. It was all too possible she'd ignore him for fear of getting into trouble, but he couldn't help but think that with the way her parents were carrying on that trouble would be the lest of her worries.

Especially when he could happily give her the news that both her parents had had lengthy conversations with him the other day. So much for fairness.

"Still not finding any common ground, are they?" Lucifer asked as he glanced back towards the house, stepping up to the fence and offering Meri a bit of a smile. "Not too surprising, considering how stubborn they both are, but never look a gift horse in the mouth, I suppose. How you doing, kid? They're not being too harsh about your openminded stance towards fallen angels, are they?"

Although Meri wasn't the sort of little girl who had to be complimented constantly, she certainly liked it when it happened. She smiled at his words, eyes sparkling ever so slightly as she stepped a little closer to the fence. She was so focused on what he was saying, she didn't even look back to see if Jack had emerged and caught her. She decided, even if it wasn't entirely true, that she didn't care. Or at least would pretend she didn't care. It was practically the same thing.

"I'm real smart," she insisted as she finally reached the fence. She reached out, resting her hands on the wood, looking Lucifer in the eye with a bright smile. Then she hesitated, the look dimming slightly and her brow furrowing. "But I don't even know what they're really fighting about. Not really," she admitted with a soft sight. "I just know it's 'bout Uncle Cas cause Jack heard mommy saying something 'bout how close he and my daddy are."

She paused then, briefly considering just asking Lucifer to explain what all the fuss was about. She didn't, though, deciding that if he did tell her and she didn't ask, and she somehow got busted for talking to him, she could honestly say she was just talking to him and not trying to get information. That was somehow worse, in her mind, although she wasn't all that sure why.

"I guess they wouldn't explain it, huh?" Lucifer asked, not really surprised by the lack of information at Meri's disposal. Parents never did tell the kids everything especially when they thought that they were too young to handle all the details, but Lucifer knew all too well that the kids were old enough to handle it no matter what the parents might think. He'd probably get threatened again for trying to backseat parent, but, well, he couldn't just sit here and look at her expectant gaze and not at least fill her in on the bare facts.

"Your Uncle Cas doesn't remember who he is," Lucifer said. "He thinks he's someone named Emmanuel. I got the impression that he didn't even know he was an angel. Kept calling himself a 'healer' instead. Now, the barest bones of the issue is that your Dad thinks that we should tell Cas who he is so he can get back to living his real life instead of this lie that he's pieced together on his own. But your Mom, now, she thinks it's more humane to just let Cas go on believing that he's this Emmanuel and spare him from all of the pain that his regular memories might bring him. And they both, of course, think they're right."

It was a lot of information for Meri to take in. Uncle Cas was definitely back, but he didn't know who he was. Her forehead furrowed into deep lines as she considered the implications of that the best that her seven-year-old mind could manage. Finally, after several long seconds of silence, she spoke. Her tone was thoughtful, the words drawn out as she began to verbally weigh the pros and cons of the situation.

"Uncle Cas did do some real bad stuff when he was here last," she agreed as she dropped her gaze to the fence. "He hurt the other Uncle Cas and upset my daddy lots. But me and Jack heard mommy and daddy talking then and they both said it wasn't really Uncle Cas..." She fell silent once more, clearly considering every angle before she finally sighed softly and looked back to Lucifer.

"Daddy's more right than mommy," she decided firmly. "Everybody says how Uncle Cas is the angel that's all for free will. You can't say that then take 'way his now that he's got it. They need to ask him what he wants and let him choose. It's his life so it's only fair." She nodded decisively, as though saying that was that.

Lucifer's smile couldn't have been any more approving if he tried, "You know, that's exactly what I said," eventually and not quite as well phrased, "but I don't think your mother was too receptive to anything I said. Probably because it was coming from me. I bet she would appreciate it a lot more coming from you," He said, the wink tacked on to the end of his statement not at all suggesting that she should eventually tell them exactly what she'd just told him. Really.

"She's probably be a lot less likely to call you insane and suggest that your opinion doesn't count no matter what it is," Lucifer said with a bit of a huff and a pout in the words. Just because he was a wee bit insane didn't mean that his opinions weren't right sometimes even if the basis for them wasn't always as structurally sound as other peoples' might be.

Although Meri would have loved to say that her mommy would never say something like that, she knew that it was probably true. Her mommy didn't like Lucifer, not even a little bit, and anytime his name came up she got a look on her face that said as much. So yes, Meri could easily see her telling him that what he thought didn't matter.

"I think that's dumb," the girl announced after a few seconds. She frowned slightly as she met his gaze. "He's your brother. You should get a say in it, too. She'd want a say if it was Uncle Lyle and I know daddy'd have a say if it was Uncle Sam." She stopped there, considering her options. She could tell her parents what she thought and risk being told she was too young for her opinion to matter. Or she could keep quiet and let them work it out like kids were supposed to do (according to her folks, anyway).

"I guess I can tell them," she finally decided. "Mommy might not like it but I bet daddy won't get too mad, since I think he's right." And, when push came to shove for Meri, that was what mattered.

A brief pause, as she absently tucked a few loose strands of hair behind her ears, and Meri perked up a bit. "D'you think maybe that'd make 'em stop fighting? I don't like it when they fight. Gabbi gets fussy and then Jack goes off to play or gets real quiet and goes to his room and there's never nothing fun to do when he's acting like that." She rolled her eyes, clearly more than willing to blame her twin for why she was currently bored.

There was very little about humanity that Lucifer could appreciate. Despite the recent insistence upon his numerous 'shared traits' with the pitiful hairless apes that had left him clinging desperately to his internal assurances that he was, at the heart, nothing like those that he so despised, there was a certain comfort that he could find in moments like this, where the simplest expressions of understanding coming from those the least likely to muck it all up with their own biases, made him feel at least a little bit better about the comparison.

A little.

And she did have a point. Castiel was his brother. Perhaps not one of his closest or one that he would move to defend whatever the slight, but there was still an inherent concern there, buried deep, deep in behind the vague amusement provoked by the situation and the surprised delight at finding out he and the elder Winchester just so happened to agree on something, that prolonging the lie would just hinder whatever recovery Castiel was capable of making. Not only would it leave him further behind for that much longer, but when he did find out, it would leave him doubting just how much the people around him cared, to leave him in that sort of state for that long. At least, that would be how Lucifer figured he'd feel in the same position, and while he wasn't really much for the whole empathizing with other people thing, he could definitely say what he'd want someone to do for him.

"I would say it would be worth a shot either way," Lucifer said with a smile at her last question. "It might not stop it immediately, but I'd bet it would give them both something to think about, having a third voice chiming in and giving them things that they might not have considered."
