WHO: Sherlock Holmes & Irene Adler
WHAT: Post dinner discussions
WHEN: After this
WHERE: Colligo City Streets → Irene's Brownstone
RATING: PG-13
STATUS: In Progress

There were several things one could say about Sherlock Holmes. He was petulantly and consistently adolescent in many of his actions. That he had absolutely no idea what qualified something as rude much less something as complimentary. That his idea of important information fell somewhere between useless and more than useless for everyone else. And perhaps, the most accurate statement of all, that he had absolutely no idea how to manage or maintain adult relationships. It was the concept of sharing the people that he considered close to him with anyone that he didn't which had come as such a stumbling block in this place and had ultimately lead to him manifesting an intense jealousy towards Irene's other friend, Charles Xavier, who had claimed so much of her time and attentions.

It was one of the reasons that he had taken such petty pleasure in gaining her company for the evening over Charles, even if he wasn't particularly hungry enough for their dinner to really count as a meal for him, and why he had insisted on walking her back to her home afterwards since they hadn't really come all that far from it anyway. Having started at Irene's brownstone and just walked until they had found a little cafe that seemed to suit their needs, walking back seemed the most efficient thing to do. Not to mention, it gave Sherlock a bit more time with her to claim for himself.

"And as much as I would rather not have to deal with another bout like the zombies," Sherlock said, continuing where he'd left off as they finished their meal as he handle the door open for Irene to head out of the cafe ahead of him, "there's only so many car accidents and random acts of gang violence that can be looked over until the crime scenes start getting a bit tedious."

Initially, Irene's interest in Sherlock Holmes had been little more than a means to an end. A very interesting means, of that there was certainly no doubt, but certainly nothing she had ever intended truly affecting her. Then things grew complicated, the lines became blurred, and the interest she had in the consulting detective became far more personal than she would ever care to admit. And now, quite some time and an entirely new reality later, she found herself faced with what she was rather convinced was the number one reason Sherlock Holmes had so few friends to begin with. It had far less to do with the fact that he could be a know-it-all ass on the best of days and was far more because, Irene was quite certain, very few people wanted to deal with the man's ridiculous jealousy and tendency to resort to behaviour better suited for a petulant five-year-old.

Of course, just because Sherlock had issue with Charles hardly meant she wasn't going to see them both. Because if there was one thing Irene wasn't about to do, it was actually choose between the two. And, fortunately for Sherlock, he had yet to reach the point where he'd suggested just that. For if he had, she certainly wouldn't be leaving a cafe with him having just enjoyed a rather pleasant meal and interesting conversation.

Speaking of which. Irene's attention flickered back to him as he picked back up on one of those interesting conversations once more. Her smile was small yet sincere as she glanced his way, falling into step alongside him once they'd reached the sidewalk. "Oh, I'm certain something will come along soon enough to suit your needs," she assured him. The way she said it made it sound as though she meant something else entirely. Then again, that was typically the case with her.

His jealousy was probably the number one reason that John simply couldn't hold down a girlfriend. Not to say that he was ever outwardly and openly cruel to them, but there was a certain dismissive attitude that he had developed since John had been dumped by Sarah which he utilized to ignore the way they sucked up bits of John's valued times and block himself off from ever feeling any sort of attachment to them at all. After all, he'd just started to get used to the idea of Sarah when he found out that John hadn't been seeing her for weeks. Why should he give any of the others a chance when they were just as likely to be gone the next day?

The major difference in that, though, was that Charles wasn't one of John's girlfriends. He was someone who was getting close to Irene, and it was hard enough to Sherlock to nail down his own associations with Ms. Adler and what they meant without someone else being thrust into the equation. Sherlock was definitely being childish about the whole thing, taking each moment she chose him over Charles as his own personal victory in some sort of imagined struggle for Irene's attentions, but considering that was the only way he knew how to be, it was rather remarkable that he'd made it through the entire evening without taking another potshot at the currently hobbled telepath.

"You say that as though you're planning something," Sherlock said, a brief flicker of mischief in his eyes as he glanced over at Irene as they walked. "It would be cruel to get my hopes up, only to have them dashed when my next case is yet another vehicular homicide."

Irene laughed softly and gave a slight shake of her head. "I do so hate to be cruel," she murmured, "however, I've nothing particular planned at this point in time, I'm afraid." Her eyes shone brightly as she cast a sideways glance at him. "Although, given some time, I'm certain I could think of something." Her tone left it rather questionable whether she truly intended on potentially creating something to keep Sherlock's attention until something more fitting came along. Of course, never would she admit to such a thing outright. That would ruin the fun.

She did, however, hate the thought of him being bored. A mind like his deserved to constantly be engaged, not forced to sit idle. Fortunately, in Colligo, there was every chance something would happen much sooner rather than later to challenge him. That did seem to be the theme of the fine city they were living in.

Irene turned her gaze to the street spread out before them, eyes dancing over the people milling about and drinking in all of the bits and pieces of information from them that she could easily gleam. She wasn't nearly as talented as the man beside her at doing such a thing, obviously, but she had a knack for being able to read people in a way that most couldn't. All too soon, however, her attention fell back to Sherlock when no one of any real interest caught her eye.

"Now I find myself curious just what it is that you do when you haven't anything of any real interest to hold your attention," she admitted lightly. A pause, and she tacked on with an impish sort of grin, "I can only imagine the sort of trouble you're liable to cause." She had a decent enough idea based on how he behaved in other aspects of his life, but she found it always easier to keep a man relaxed if they were allowed to discuss themselves. And, seeing as how he'd brought up the initial conversation, she saw no reason to continue the natural path it was taking.

Oh, the things he did without a case. His and John's poor flat had been torn to pieces and then put back again many a time since they'd been here because of the lack of work beyond the mundane and John's determination to keep him from his usual distraction techniques, most of which had to do with filling his body with an assortment of chemicals and letting them occupy his brain until something better came along. Unfortunately, the primary concern of a doctor when it came to these sorts of actions was the fact that he was either slowly giving himself lung cancer or quickly poisoning his system in a way that would eventually lead to an overnight stay in a hospital and Sherlock having to swallow liters of activated charcoal. Neither of which John really wanted to have happen. So Sherlock's distractions had been really rather limited to irritating John and being eternally grateful that his best friend seemed more thankful for being driven to distraction than he did fed up with it.

"John finds ways to keep me distracted," Sherlock said, offering Irene a playful smile. "And I've yet to completely upend part of the city to stir up trouble when I'm bored so I would like I think that it's working. Even if he's about as thrilled with me borrowing his revolver to redecorate the wall here as he was back home." Even if there had been absolutely no complaints from anyone else this time around.

Of course, Nathan and Mac always did their best to keep him active and involved even with they both seemed to understand that he didn't entirely feel the scenes that they had to work were always up to par with his level of investigative skill. Of course, they had also made it rather clear that if he didn't feel himself up to helping with the simple stuff, there really was no point of them calling him if they got something interesting. So he had been doing his best to pull his weight either way.

"Though, if you'd like the chance to distract me one day, I'm sure it can be arranged. John would probably love a bit of a break."
