WHO: Emma & Ruby Winchester.
WHAT: Exploring the city. Yes, during a zombie invasion.
WHEN: A bit during, then after, this.
WHERE: Downtown area.
RATING: TBD. Possibly a bit high due to violence and various other things of that nature.
STATUS: In Progress

Emma didn't know what was going on but she didn't like it. One minute she had been facing off with her dad and his giant of a brother, the next she had been transported to some crazy city where neither of them knew who she was or were even willing to consider that she might be telling the truth about her parentage. And okay, so she was pretty sure that she was a few seconds away from being shot and killed in that hotel room, but that didn't mean she had to happy she was pulled away before it could happen. She was a warrior, after all. Or, at least, she was supposed to be one. The point was, warriors didn't run away from their problems. They faced them, back straight and unafraid no matter what the outcome. Only, she hadn't done that. She had instead failed in her task and, now, had been robbed of the death she deserved because of that failure thanks to the meddling of some kind of entity with power that was completely off the charts.

So now here she was, stuck in some city she didn't belong in, separated from her people and unsure if she was supposed to keep trying to kill her father or not, since technically she'd made the attempt and had failed. Would killing him now redeem her or would it just anger the others, if they found out she'd effectively cheated death for what amounted to a do-over? Honestly, Emma didn't have any clue and wasn't about to start guessing. Instead, she decided, she was going to learn more about the city of Colligo. And maybe kill a few zombies while she was at it. Mostly because it helped to blow off some steam and, well, if they were dumb enough to try and attack her she figured they deserved whatever they had coming to them.

Making her way down the street, it didn't take long for the walking dead to notice her. A couple of them gave her a wide berth - Emma could only assume either they realized she wasn't quite human or decided she wasn't a tasty enough snack - but a few others made their way toward her with a slow, rambling gait that really made her wonder how they were expected to survive at all. Because seriously. When a snail could outrun you? Your odds of catching things to eat dropped pretty significantly.

Which wasn't here nor there, she told herself as she rolled her eyes in annoyance and punched one of the rotting, reanimated corpses. The sound of crunching cartilage and the squish of meat against her hand brought a faint smile to her lips. Her eyes flashed red, momentarily, before she regained her composure and drew her knife. "I think," she commented to no one in particular because the zombies sure weren't listening, "that this might be the best idea I've had yet." And then she charged forward, slicing, stabbing, and punching the creatures with a twisted sort of delight that she knew would probably get her killed on the spot if her father, his brother, or anyone who knew them were to see.

"The first thing you need to know about this place - nothing's like what it is back home," Ruby said. "It's true, hunters normally do kill creatures like us, because we're 'evil, bad, horrible things that need to be stopped'. And back where I'm from, a hunter did kill me, because of what I did, what I am. That hunter was Dean, actually. And his brother - my husband - held me still so he could stab me with my own knife. And yes, you'd think that once I got here, I'd want to kill them both for what they did to me. And a part of me did. But then I realized that here, I didn't have to have anything to do with them. So for awhile, I didn't. I got settled, made a life here, formed new friendships that I would have never been able to at home."

Pause.

"One thing you have to understand, is that Sam and I, back home had a...complicated relationship. It was my duty, my assigned task to get him to tap into his powers and free Lucifer from his cage, starting the Apocalypse. And as it was considered a great honor among demons, it was a task that I gladly accepted. And at the time, I had no problems manipulating him to get him to do what he was destined to do. But over time...I felt myself developing feelings for him, and questioning my task. But in the end, I still betrayed him. Because it was what I had to do. And I was killed for it. So naturally, when I came here, I kept my distance from Sam and his brother, and anyone connected to them."

"But that changed over time. After I'd been in the city for a little while, Sam and I reunited. We kept things simply between us, at first, but eventually, Dean found out. And honestly? I thought he was going to kill me again. But he surprised me by giving me a chance, and told me he decided that he was going to accept his brother's relationship with me. It's weird, as yes, Dean and Sam are hunters, and should both want to kill me, but like I've said several times already, this place allows for you to do what you want to do, not what someone else wants you to. That's one of the good things about being somewhere where what you've done in the past...doesn't really matter. You're allowed to make your own choices, not bound to anyone you might have been before. Sam and I? We would have never gotten this far back home. We would have never been able to get married, have a family, a life together, because it wouldn't be allowed, back home. But here? We can be whatever we want to be."

Ruby paused again, smiling at her.

"And so can you, Emma. I know, I've said a lot, and it's a lot to take in, but you don't have to be what your tribe wanted you to be. You can just be Emma, and whoever you decide she is."

Emma listened closely as Ruby spoke and, by the end of it, still found she wasn't sure quite what to think. It all seemed so surreal and she didn't know if this whole second chance idea was a good thing or bad. Brow furrowed slightly in thought, her gaze went down to the knife she'd been given by her tribe when she'd been sent off to perform her blood ritual. This was the weapon she was supposed to use to kill her father. It had been given her to in an ancient ceremony, handed over by women who had done their part to earn the right to wield it. It meant something, far more than she could put into words, and yet instead of using it to finish the task she'd been given, she had instead used it to slaughter a bunch of zombies.

"This is all I've ever known." The words were spoken so softly, they were little more than a whisper. She raised her gaze back to Ruby, confusion shining in her eyes. "My duty is supposed to be to my tribe, to making sure we survive and continue to flourish. I... I don't know how to do anything else."

Which wasn't to say she couldn't learn but, if she was being perfectly honest, she wasn't entire certain she wanted to change things. Sure, there had always been some small part of her that had resisted what she was being taught. Something inside of her that fought against the brutality she was expected to commit. But, in the end, she had made herself do what she had to do because that was all she knew. The thought of actually running away like she had tried to convince her father she was doing? That terrified her more than the thought of dying ever did.

With a soft sigh, Emma put away her knife. "I know they won't ever accept me," she finally stated, deciding she had to make up her mind one way or another. "My father and the others, I mean. And I don't really blame them, I guess. I'm not sure I'd accept me either, if I were in their shoes." Her gaze cut over to the zombies she and Ruby had just killed, taking in the sight of the massacre without so much as a twitch.

"But..." She looked back to the demon in front of her, squaring her shoulders as she finally made up her mind on the best way to move forward for the time being. "I'm not going to go after him again. Not here. Even if I got lucky and succeeded, there just isn't any point."
