Backdated prior to September 24th.

Who: Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler
What: Arrival in the library
Where: In the library and outside it, then Rose's house
When: Prior to September 24th
Status: In progress

Ianto woke up lying on a cold marble floor. He could feel the stiffness in his muscles as he pushed himself into a sitting position; he must have been here awhile. He got to his feet, patting his pockets. Wallet, cell phone, keys...He pulled out his phone. No reception. Well, that wasn't surprising, he could be anywhere, in any time. The Rift wasn't picky. It did seem to have an unnatural attraction to him, though. At least he had his memory this time, as far as he could tell.

The room he was in was cool and silent, with shelves built into the walls. Shelves full of books. A library, then, and a very nice one from the looks of it. He spied a door on the other side of the room and started towards it, and something skittered across the floor as his foot connected with it. He bent down to pick it up. Some kind of PDA, apparently, although the design was slightly unfamiliar. It appeared to have power, which was more than his phone did at the moment. He briefly considered that it might be a bomb or a tracking device or something else he didn't want to pick up and carry around. But it wasn't like he had been kidnapped; the Rift acted at random. No one was trying to hurt him. He slipped it into his pocket.

He walked through the library, every sense alert for a sign of danger. Or even another person. Libraries were supposed to be quiet, he knew, but this was bordering on eerie. There were no signs that he could see, either, in any language. He went over to one of the shelves and pulled down one of the books, flipping through the pages. Blank. He pulled down the next one to find it the exact same way. And the next. The next. As many as he cared to check. Now this was really starting to worry him.

He made his way to what appeared to be some kind of central rotunda, decorated with suits of armour on plinths. Even here, the place seemed deserted. Suddenly, a soft scraping sound broke the silence. He turned, his heart leaping into his throat as two of the suits of armour stepped down from their plinths and made their way toward him. Not menacingly, and they didn't have weapons, but they were deliberate and looked heavy. “Hello?” he tried. Nothing.

He took a few steps backwards, then to the side. They followed him, not changing their pace. He was sure he could outrun them, but what purpose would that serve? He could tell the place was huge, and he could just end up wandering aimlessly. The things stopped a few feet from him. One pointed towards the door he had entered the rotunda through, and both started walking again. After a few steps, they stopped, and turned to look at him. He took a step closer. They continued.

Well, they certainly weren't threatening, although they were disturbing. Still, he followed, even more on edge than before, if possible. The clank of metal armour on the marble floor echoed loudly in the stillness.

After walking for what seemed like miles, because, he knew, it probably was, they arrived at a huge set of double doors, easily four times his height, although they opened without a whisper at his slightest touch. He could see the sunlight beyond, eager to be out of this place. It could be more dangerous out there, but a person trying to hurt him might also be a person not trying to hurt him and there were clearly no people inside. He made his way through the door and down the steps, on to the street. The doors shut behind him as silently as they had opened.

He found himself in what appeared to be a fairly sizable city. Unfortunately, he didn't know nearly enough about architecture to try and learn anything from the buildings around him. The air was warm and definitely breathable, and the sky was blue, which was reassuring if not significant.

There was no one in the street, at least not as far as he could see, but the city did not feel empty in the way the library had. Information was what he needed, though, and he had just left one of the most likely places to find it. That meant people.

"You dress extremely well." He gave Ianto a lingering up-down look-- after all, it'd been awhile since he got to do that, too. Lots of things to catch up on.

"Yeah, you can ask that sort of stuff. That exact situation, no, but insane stuff like that? Apparently regular around here. Here, let me send this link over to your PDA, lots of information there..."

He grinned softly with that. "Feel free to look."

"The bizarre does seem to happen with distressing frequency once we show up. Link to what?"

"Why thank you." He made a pleased sound as he took in how Ianto looked-- quite literally like the day that Jack disappeared, since it was still that day for Ianto.

"One of the young ladies here compiled info on the people and things that show up here. It's on that message network."

"You're very welcome. Love to have you look." And of course, it had been awhile for Jack.

"How does that work?"

"Mmm, thanks. A lot of touching, a lot of ogling..." Not that Ianto minded.

"I'll give you a crash course when we can sit down and really look at them." Tutorials were made almost impossible while walking with groceries and an arm around each other.

"Mmm, sounds like a good night."

"Yeah, kind of hard to do it out here, what with our hands full and everything." He got a better hold on the bags he was carrying and settled in more comfortably with Jack as they walked the rest of the way to Rose's house.

"Prepare to be worshiped, hmm?"

"Yup! And I'm not willing to free up a hand for lessons. Althouuugh..." It was awkward using just a thumb to type, so he kept it very brief, but he wanted to tip Rose off just a little. He sent the very short text, "Come outside & see", then got back to just comfortably walking back with Ianto.

It was a little too quiet, but Rose had taken to putting lettuce in front of the tortoise that she had found in the TARDIS months ago. It had to be a bad day when she was enjoying staring at one of the slowest animals ever. Jack had gone to get food that wasn't high in fat and wouldn't ruin their teeth and she was beginning to wish she had gone with him rather than telling him to not be lazy and work off the fat from all the ice cream and alcohol. When her phone buzzed, though, she did reach for it quickly and rolled her eyes with a laugh, running a finger along the tortoise's shell.

"I wont be long." God she needed another hobby if she was talking to an animal. Pushing herself up to stand, she slipped her phone in her pocket as she walked to open the door. "Harkness you better not be taking the pi-Oh. Hello."

She hadn't expected company. If she had she would have chosen to actually straighten her hair instead of letting it sit in a wavy mess. And she would have changed out of one of Jack's blue shirts, which she had thrown over jeans, and into a proper top.

"Ianto? When did you get back?"

No offense to Rose's tortoise, which probably was a very nice tortoise, but Jack was used to rather more exciting creatures. Pteranodon to tortoise was kind of a let down, so he was just fine letting Rose take care of it while he dealt with their food situation. Of course, he had pouted over Rose teasingly implying that he needed to work off anything, but it was fine; they did need that food.

He gave Ianto's shoulder a squeeze as they approached the house. He'd timed the text well; they walked up as Rose came out the front door, and Jack beamed at her. Oh, poor Rose wasn't all done up, and wait a sec she stole (okay, borrowed) one of his shirts, but it wasn't like she ever looked awful, even if she might've preferred to make a different impression.

"He's not back, Rose! Remember what I said? Tiiimeliiiines." He'd really tried to make that difference clear when he arrived, but as easily as they fell into their normal patterns, it really didn't feel all that different. "So, Rose has met a Ianto here who isn't my Ianto, and my Ianto has met Rose who isn't you, Rose, but this is the first time you're meeting this version of each other! But the important thing is--" and his voice became almost ridiculously (but very understandably) giddy, "Ianto!!! Here, finally!"

He stayed pressed in close, taking in the house as they walked up to it. It looked like a nice, neat little place.

He hadn't spent a lot of time with Rose in their earlier meetings, but he grinned as he saw her. She looked very much...herself like this, not trying to make a certain impression.

"Rose." He let go of Jack so he could hold out a hand to shake hers; he wasn't familiar enough to go in for hug. "Pleased for this version of me to meet this version of you. Thank you for letting Jack stay with you." And keeping an eye on him. Keeping him safe, and sane.

"Hey not my fault you screwed up the timelines," she teased Jack. "You travel with the Doctor and you come to learn a lot about them. Travel with you and the Doctor and it gets drummed into your head all the time."

She laughed at the change in Jack's tone, shaking her head fondly at her best friend. It really was rather adorable to see him like this. He hadn't exactly been depressed but he hadn't been entirely himself since he arrived here and she had guessed it was Ianto making him like that. Well not so much guessed as realised when it came to their nights sitting in complaining about how cruel the universe was for taking those thye loved away from them.

"Right back at you," she replied with a grin, shaking his hand. "I'm more grateful for having him here than he is for having somewhere. Since he already had some place when I dragged him here. Anyway, come in!"

He shook Rose's hand and then settled back in with Jack. He was glad that Jack had missed him, but sorry that he had to be missed. He figured he would have very little personal space the next few days. Not that he normally did, but even less so than normal.

"Well, the company is important, too. I know how much you mean to him." He grinned. "Thank you!" He tried to stay snuggled with Jack as they walked into the house, although it looked like getting through the door might be a challenge.

Overall, Jack wasn't much bothered with personal space anyway, but especially with Ianto. Rose was getting to see it herself, with plenty of mutual friendly cuddling. That wasn't quite what Jack would be doing with Ianto. He tried approaching the doorway sideways, one of them after the other, since they couldn't walk straight in like that.

"I did NOT mess up the timelines! Hmph! Somebody else did, clearly. But I can't ask the other me how it got screwed up, for the obvious reason that I'm the only me here now. And I can't compare if it was one timeline that branched, or always two separate timelines that were just super similar up to a point where they got really different."

Having Ianto back considerably changed his demeanor, all right. He hoped his improved mood would carry over to Rose, and maybe it'd encourage her to try working things out with the half-human Doctor. She might want to get some of what Jack was getting-- not literally, of course, not that Ianto wasn't plenty desirable.

While they talked, he worked on putting away his bag of groceries, and pointed where Ianto could put things; Ianto wasn't one to sit back while someone else did the clean-up.

"Yeah, and the TARDIS was great and all, but I didn't have you there and she was so different like that anyway. I miss her old self. Anyway, you needed me more here, so here I came! And now Ianto's here." He beamed over to Ianto. "Which does bring up the question... do you want us to stay here, Rose?"

"Starting with me and the TARDIS, I guess," she said with a shrug. They did sort of set him off on the path of messing up timelines since she brought him back. But she was glad she did in a way, even if he could never die now and she guessed that couldn't be very fun.

As she walked in, she carefully lifted Jason, the tortoise which the Doctor had named, and placed him back where he normally was kept just so he wasn't at risk of being stepped on or anything. She could hear Jack rambling on and she shook her head fondly, knowing it was all because of Ianto being here. At least he was back to normal now.

"If you like," she said as she walked back to join him. "I'm not going to make you two stay here. I'm a big girl, I'll be fine. And I have Jason."

Not the best companion, but he'll do.

He grinned broadly at the both of them and gave Jack a playful one-armed hug. "Well, it hasn't been all bad, has it?"

He put away the groceries where Jack directed him, trying to get a feel for how the kitchen was organised. He looked over at Jack curiously as Rose moved a tortoise out of their way. "Yours? Or hers?"

Oh, Rose. Not that he knew her well, but he inferred from her words that the company would be more than appreciated. "Rose, you're not making us do anything. It'll be great for me to have an already settled house and some familiar faces around me while I get adjusted to this place. Besides, I almost feel like I know Jack's stories of you better than the actual you. We should fix that."

"I guess so! You, me, and the TARDIS, freakiest three-way ever?" True, that couldn't have helped the timelines do their regular thing, locking him into life like this. But it seemed time was tougher than he'd given it credit for back in the Time Agency days; the Doctor had made it clear how limited the human understanding was, blowing their own importance out of proportion and the like.

He grinned back and gave Ianto a proper hug as soon as the groceries were done, then he reached over to Rose to drag her into it as well. "Not my tortoise! Sorry, Jason, you aren't huggable enough."

Rose wouldn't be making them stay. They didn't want to stay if it'd be uncomfortable for her having them, and they wanted to be there for her while she got through this. He smiled softly over to Ianto; that sounded to him like exactly the right thing to say. He pressed a kiss into Rose's hair. "So, no offense to Jason, but he doesn't get you all to himself yet."

"The best three way, I'll have you know."

She laughed a little as Jack pulled her into the hug, her own arms automatically wrapping around both boys. She may not know this Ianto that well, but she had a feeling he would be just as friendly. When both of them told her they would stay, she smiled a little. She wouldn't mind if they would rather go elsewhere but she still rather liked having company. She accepted the kiss to her hair, before smiling at Ianto. She hoped he didn't think her stepping into something she shouldn't.

"Thank you. You're both welcome for as long as you want. And I'm sure Jason would like the company. After all I found him in the TARDIS with the...Anyway, the more the merrier."

She didn't know why she felt slightly unable to say the Doctor's name. Maybe it just hurt a little too much still to be without him.

"Oh, I think that might be a matter for some debate."

He settled happily into the hug, glad to include Rose as well. It had nothing to do with knowing her or not knowing her; sometimes, you just needed a hug. There was something enormously comforting about them.

"Right, it always does good to have someone else around. Or several someone elses."

Now that he had a chance to collect himself a bit, he realised something. "Hate to interrupt, but I am starving. Something about intergalactic travel..." He turned to Jack. "I seem to remember that you would be the culinary genius out of the three of us..."

Jack gave Ianto a wicked grin; someday, when Rose could appreciate it, they'd tell her about that. Not yet.

Hugs were always a great thing-- especially Jack's hugs. Between the warmth, big bear-hugging arms, and smell, he really gave off that comfort. But to keep it from getting too serious, especially as he recognized that hesitation about the Doctor, he ruffled the hell out of Rose's hair when he pulled back from the hug.

"Hey, Ianto, didn't Q have a turtle?" Then he nodded. "Yep! Hey, get some water, too. You'll be dehydrated." He filled a glass for Ianto and handed it over with a casual salute. "Genius sandwiches coming up! You two get cozy. God, I miss your coffee, but I couldn't stand buying any. We'll have to pick some up later."

He kept listening to the two of them as he quietly worked on making lunch. Yeah, he obviously loved talking with them, but they needed a chance to get to know each other, too.

"Do you mind?!" she squealed out as he ruffled her hair, whacking hi playfully in the stomach. Not that it mattered, her hair was already a mess as it was. "You know sometimes I hate you Harkness."

She smiled a little at them, watching the ease between the two. She felt guilty, she was happy for them and yet she wished they didn't have it just because she didn't. Nodding at Ianto, she gave him a slightly strained smile. More out of awkwardness than anything else really.

"I wasn't aware he was that good at cooking."

He laughed with that, both Jack's ruffling and Rose's reaction. "He has that effect on people."

"Yep! Named John! He lived on top of the piano, I think." He took the glass of water gratefully and downed half of it; he was thirstier than he realised. "Oh yes. I have to have my coffee. And you do, too."

He grinned over at Rose, trying to go for friendly but mostly achieving nervous. "Pretty good, yeah. And definitely better than I am, unless you're craving cheese toasties."

"God I know. I should apologise to every person that has had to suffer him ever since the game station." She was teasing of course. She was glad he was alive though, even if it was against the laws of time or whatever it was.

Perching on a worktop, she glanced down at the coffee comments. She knew why Jack hadn't been so willing and understood completely. It was probably why they had been on a booze, chocolate and ice cream diet for a while now.

"I guess I'll just have to find out. We haven't exactly been making proper meals." Until now it would seem.

"No! No apology necessary. Completely worth it, thank you!" God, he owed so much to Jack. And to Rose, by extension.

He leaned against the worktop next to Rose, watching Jack idly. "Do you have a coffee maker, here, or do I need to invest in one?" He grinned. "Oh, you'd be surprised!"

She laughed at Ianto's quick dismissal of her apology, nodding. "Maybe you are happy but I bet there are billions out there who think Jack more hassle than he's worth."

She said it with fondness, and Jack would be able to tell she meant it like that. Then, of course, he would know that there were some who probably did think that.

"No coffee maker. I'm more of a tea girl. But I guess we have our chef in Jack, then. We've been living off take away's and ice cream recently."

"Well, yeah, but they'd think that even if he wasn't immortal," he teased gently.

"Well, take-away and ice cream does have its place. But more substantial things can be good, too. So, um, what do you like to eat, Rose?" It seemed like as good a place to start as any.
