Backdated prior to September 24th.

Who: Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler
What: Arrival in the library
Where: In the library and outside it, then Rose's house
When: Prior to September 24th
Status: In progress

Ianto woke up lying on a cold marble floor. He could feel the stiffness in his muscles as he pushed himself into a sitting position; he must have been here awhile. He got to his feet, patting his pockets. Wallet, cell phone, keys...He pulled out his phone. No reception. Well, that wasn't surprising, he could be anywhere, in any time. The Rift wasn't picky. It did seem to have an unnatural attraction to him, though. At least he had his memory this time, as far as he could tell.

The room he was in was cool and silent, with shelves built into the walls. Shelves full of books. A library, then, and a very nice one from the looks of it. He spied a door on the other side of the room and started towards it, and something skittered across the floor as his foot connected with it. He bent down to pick it up. Some kind of PDA, apparently, although the design was slightly unfamiliar. It appeared to have power, which was more than his phone did at the moment. He briefly considered that it might be a bomb or a tracking device or something else he didn't want to pick up and carry around. But it wasn't like he had been kidnapped; the Rift acted at random. No one was trying to hurt him. He slipped it into his pocket.

He walked through the library, every sense alert for a sign of danger. Or even another person. Libraries were supposed to be quiet, he knew, but this was bordering on eerie. There were no signs that he could see, either, in any language. He went over to one of the shelves and pulled down one of the books, flipping through the pages. Blank. He pulled down the next one to find it the exact same way. And the next. The next. As many as he cared to check. Now this was really starting to worry him.

He made his way to what appeared to be some kind of central rotunda, decorated with suits of armour on plinths. Even here, the place seemed deserted. Suddenly, a soft scraping sound broke the silence. He turned, his heart leaping into his throat as two of the suits of armour stepped down from their plinths and made their way toward him. Not menacingly, and they didn't have weapons, but they were deliberate and looked heavy. “Hello?” he tried. Nothing.

He took a few steps backwards, then to the side. They followed him, not changing their pace. He was sure he could outrun them, but what purpose would that serve? He could tell the place was huge, and he could just end up wandering aimlessly. The things stopped a few feet from him. One pointed towards the door he had entered the rotunda through, and both started walking again. After a few steps, they stopped, and turned to look at him. He took a step closer. They continued.

Well, they certainly weren't threatening, although they were disturbing. Still, he followed, even more on edge than before, if possible. The clank of metal armour on the marble floor echoed loudly in the stillness.

After walking for what seemed like miles, because, he knew, it probably was, they arrived at a huge set of double doors, easily four times his height, although they opened without a whisper at his slightest touch. He could see the sunlight beyond, eager to be out of this place. It could be more dangerous out there, but a person trying to hurt him might also be a person not trying to hurt him and there were clearly no people inside. He made his way through the door and down the steps, on to the street. The doors shut behind him as silently as they had opened.

He found himself in what appeared to be a fairly sizable city. Unfortunately, he didn't know nearly enough about architecture to try and learn anything from the buildings around him. The air was warm and definitely breathable, and the sky was blue, which was reassuring if not significant.

There was no one in the street, at least not as far as he could see, but the city did not feel empty in the way the library had. Information was what he needed, though, and he had just left one of the most likely places to find it. That meant people.

"Great! Is there anything you'd really like to learn how to make? Something you loved when you were little, or something?" He grinned. "Oh, Jack never fakes it."

No prob! I'm in a workshop myself Friday/Saturday, so while I've internet, supposed to be learning, not RPing! *cheeky grin*

"My mum wasn't the greatest of cooks either, so there isn't much," she said honestly with a shrug. They usually had food that was easy and, to be honest, cheap.

"That's all right. We can just start with the basics, then." He grinned. "You can boil a pot of water, right?"

"Ah, no, it's easy, you'll see. The trick is not to watch it, otherwise it won't boil at all," he teased.

Rose rolled her eyes at that, laughing a little as she shook her head. She was glad that Jack had found someone that calmed him a little and who he genuinely seemed to love being with. He deserved it.

"You're oh so funny," she responded sarcastically.

"I know! Stick around, I'll be here all week." He considered that. "Or possibly much longer."

"So....when's your birthday?" He hazarded a random question

"April 27th," Rose answered, giving him a look. It was a strange question, and obvious small talk, but really it would make sense knowing. "Yours?"

"May 17th! Not too far apart." It had been a bit of an obvious question, but they had to start somewhere, and he liked birthdays. "So, on the topic of cooking and birthdays, what would be a perfect birthday dinner for you?"

"Yeah," she said with a laugh, glancing at Jack doing god knows what. She trusted him with the kitchen though. She was the one who would be more likely to burn it to pieces. "I lived on an estate with my mum, birthday dinners usually consisted of chips and vodka as I got older. When I was younger it was just whatever was my favourite at the time."

"Well Mum used to make the most amazing roast chicken, so I guess if you pushed me for something I'd say that." But travelling did not suit a fussy eater.

"Mmm, roast chicken is good. And roasting isn't actually even that hard! You just have to check things to make sure they don't dry out." He seemed very proud of having acquired this bit of knowledge. "Ummmm..." He tried to think of something else. "Anything you'd like to ask me?"

"And check that I don't set fire to everything?" she said with a laugh. When Ianto asked if she had any questions, she shrugged as she thought. "Why the hell did you pick Jack?"

It was a tease. Mostly.

She smiled at that and nodded. Part of her really wanted to find out every little secret Ianto had just so she could ensure he meant well by Jack, to make sure he was good enough for her best friend. “And who could blame you.”

"Are you trying to make his head explode?" Rose loved Jack. Very much. And she knew how incredible he was, just not in the way that Ianto did. Jack was her best friend and that was it.

He blinked and sputtered, trying hard not to laugh. One consequence of spending so much time with Jack was that he had just gotten used to interpreting things certain ways. "N-no, no...I'm pretty much around to keep his ego in check."

Ianto's slight reaction to her words had her laughing and rolling her eyes. Of course, she had spent a lot of time with Jack and in a small environment, and she knew how capable he was at making you interpret things in a slightly different way. "Jack's corrupted you a lot more in this reality."

"It's not corrupting!" That would imply there was something wrong with it, and....no, just no. Jack was perfect "He has...opened my mind to the nuances of the English language."

“I’ll bet he has,” she said with a slight smirk before laughing. “I think even the Doctor was surprised to hear half the innuendos that came from him.” Maybe a slight exaggeration but on occasion it was true. Jack had an impressive skill of saying things that could mean something else or twisting another persons words.

"Not all he's opened up, either." He couldn't help it, he just couldn't. He had spent too much time with Jack. Well, not too much, but too much to let certain opportunities pass him by.

If that had been said to her whilst she had been drunk she was completely positive she would have fallen straight to the floor at what he said, laughing her head off. Luckily she was not easily shocked and something like that didn’t make her embarrassed. “I think you may be one of my favourite people.

He was glad that that went over well, although if Rose was spending time with Jack, she should be used to it. He also wasn't entirely used to making that sort of comment to someone other than Jack. "Really?! Good. I mean, you're so important to the people who are important to me..."
