Who: Ukitake, George Lass
When: Saturday morning
Where: Park at the far south of the city.
What: Glory claims another victim.
Rating: Medium. Warning for some blood, mental illness, and mention of violence.
Status: Complete!

All things considered, there was very little blood. The only clear signs of combat were the broken tree limbs and scorch marks scattered across a modest radius within the park. The damage was minimal for a battle that had involved a Soul Reaper captain in shikai, particularly a captain as powerful as Ukitake. His zanpakto's first state of release could be devastating, and there was no question that Ukitake wielded his sword with exceptional skill. Against a Hell God, however, that skill had not been enough. Not without the full release of Ukitake's powers.

The blood that darkened Ukitake's white captain's coat came not from any wounds Glory had inflicted, but from deep within his own treacherous body. He sat with his shoulders curled tightly in over his knees, back against a sheltering tree. His long white hair shielded his face and was tinted pink by the same source as the stains on his clothes. Sogyo no Kotowari lay discarded several feet away, its gently curved blade naked and gleaming in the sunlight. The sword almost seemed to shudder as its master shook with tension, rasping sobs tearing their way from his abused throat. To those who had the ability to sense the energy of a soul, Sogyo no Kotowari emitted a soft, twin-voiced song, trying to bring comfort to Ukitake's badly damaged mind.

"No." Ukitake's protest was remarkably clear, given what he had just been through. "No," he repeated again, insistently. He caught the other reaper's wrists and tried to push her away, despite the weakness that lingered in his limbs. "Have to finish." His movements were jerky and uncoordinated as he got to his feet.

"Have to finish. Can't stop here. Can't." Ukitake's hair lashed at his shoulders as he looked wildly about. Finally, his gaze lit on his sword, and he lunged for it.

Well at least she was able to understand him. She kind of figured he'd be dribbling about now, like the others. She was pushed, but didn't really let that bother her. "She's gone. You can't. She'll kill you. Y'know. Again. You can't take her on like this." No one could. Everyone failed. God, how were they supposed to stop her? And though she had tried to help him to her feet, she was pretty much bowled over by his need to get to his sword.

"Jesus Christ.." she muttered, wiping herself off. "She's gone. You can't finish. There's nothing to finish. She'll smoosh you into a tiny thousand pieces, don't you get that?"

Of course, not a word George said truly registered with Ukitake. He dropped to his knees beside Sogyo no Kotowari and grasped his sword with both hands--his fingers closing on both the hilt and the blade. He held the zanpakto close to his chest as he rose. "Shh," he told it. "Shh. We can finish. We can. Still here. I'm still here."

Ukitake looked over his shoulder at George, his eyes shining a faint blue as his spiritual pressure rose around him, stirring the wind. "We can stop her."

Why did everyone have to be so stubborn when it was really important?? George could be more stubborn than anyone, that was true. But at least she knew when to quit and just give in. If there was a wall, she would have beat her head against it. "No, you can't. Look, everyone's getting together to take her down.. together. Isn't it better to have help or whatever? No one's been able to kill her yet. You haven't certainly fucking done it."

Great, wind stirring. She frowned, but refrained to be freaked out or scared. She was dead, Glory couldn't actually kill her. Right? She didn't know. And she knew no one would give a fuck if she was smooshed. But whatever. She wasn't gonna let more people get killed. "Come on, I've already taken enough souls, vigilantism doesn't ever fucking help!"

The wind rose in response, strong enough to whip Ukitake's shihakusho and haori around his thin frame. He moved his sword to a one-handed ready position at his side. Fresh blood traced down the blade where he'd held it with his other hand a moment before.

"I can," he insisted. "I can. Didn't lose. We didn't." The faint light became a corona that enveloped the Soul Reaper's entire body. He turned away from George, presumably in the direction Glory had gone. "We won't lose. We can't. We can't give up."

His next step faltered as he began coughing. His fingers loosened, and his sword fell to the ground once more. Strangely, it almost looked as though the weapon had jerked itself free. Ukitake's spiritual pressure suddenly cut off, and the wind abruptly died.

The Soul Reaper dropped to his knees and grasped at his sword's hilt, his shoulders heaving with effort as the sobs returned. "Please."

Whether he was speaking to the sword or not was as unclear as what he was begging for.

George hoped that she could be heard over all the wind, and her hair was in her face, but she ignored it. "No, you really fucking can't. I think maybe under normal .. whatever fucking.. if you were home, yeah sure. But this place is fucked up. That guy probably made it so she can't die ever!" It seemed like Morgan Freeman had the power to do just that if he wanted.

"You're not giving up, you're just saving your strength to help other people. I thought that was what you all did. Help people. You know, work together. Instead of going all.. half cocked." She shut up promptly when he started to cough, and she blinked and went over beside him again. Shit. Well she hadn't meant to yell that bad.

"It's gonna be okay.." she assured him. God she was bad at this. Like phenomenally bad. "I'm here. Just try and rest. You can't win like this." Oh man, crying was so not in her repertoire. Not unless it was her own crying. "Shh shh, you're gonna be okay, honest."

It was several minutes before Ukitake calmed sufficiently to speak. "It's so hard to hear," he said. "So hard." He ran his hand over the hilt of his sword and murmured, "What do you want? Why won't you help?"

At a loss, he looked up at George, making eye contact with her for the first time. A trace of blood was still on his lips, and he was pale and bedraggled, with dark circles under his eyes. "Sogyo no Kotowari refused me. I don't know what to do."

Maybe George was yelling too much. Well she'd try and cut back on that then. She didn't know what exactly was going on, though she got the gist of it. The sword refused to help? Though that sounded insane. But she'd gotten over insane a long time ago. She'd been just about ready to just sit down and wait for him to stop talking to the sword when he actually looked at her.

"I know, I'm sorry." She was much quieter this time. "You just need to get your strength back. You're running on empty." Plus, the disease he had well, she doubted that was helping any. He looked tired. "Let me help you get inside okay?"

He nodded weakly. After a momentary hesitation, he sheathed his sword and reached up, allowing George to help him find his feet. He was a good deal taller than her, but not at all heavy in spite of it. His illness robbed him of much of his energy, preventing him from gaining much weight no matter how healthy his appetite.

"Home," he whispered. "We want to go home." He didn't mean to the apartment he shared with Tessa. Ukitake, what little of him was capable of remembering, wanted to return to the comfort of Soul Society. He wanted Shunsui and Retsu nearby, and the comforting strength of Genryusai-sensei. He wanted his brothers and sisters and the peace of their ancestral home with its glistening ponds and wide, peaceful gardens.

George had lots and lots of experience picking Mason up and walking him home when he was totally plastered. And Mason was much taller than her, so this wasn't anything new. Once she got up him to his feet, she kept his arm around her so that she could help him get inside somewhere. Probably home, since that's where he wanted to go. Though he didn't say home-home, George kind of got that.

"Yeah I know, we all want to go home," she murmured. Of course she wanted to go home. She'd still be dead, but at least she'd have friends there. People who actually cared, even if they didn't at the same time. It was better than being stuck here. Not that she was ever good at making friends. Slowly she started to walk Ukitake towards the apartments.
