Who: Ukitake, George Lass
When: Saturday morning
Where: Park at the far south of the city.
What: Glory claims another victim.
Rating: Medium. Warning for some blood, mental illness, and mention of violence.
Status: Complete!

All things considered, there was very little blood. The only clear signs of combat were the broken tree limbs and scorch marks scattered across a modest radius within the park. The damage was minimal for a battle that had involved a Soul Reaper captain in shikai, particularly a captain as powerful as Ukitake. His zanpakto's first state of release could be devastating, and there was no question that Ukitake wielded his sword with exceptional skill. Against a Hell God, however, that skill had not been enough. Not without the full release of Ukitake's powers.

The blood that darkened Ukitake's white captain's coat came not from any wounds Glory had inflicted, but from deep within his own treacherous body. He sat with his shoulders curled tightly in over his knees, back against a sheltering tree. His long white hair shielded his face and was tinted pink by the same source as the stains on his clothes. Sogyo no Kotowari lay discarded several feet away, its gently curved blade naked and gleaming in the sunlight. The sword almost seemed to shudder as its master shook with tension, rasping sobs tearing their way from his abused throat. To those who had the ability to sense the energy of a soul, Sogyo no Kotowari emitted a soft, twin-voiced song, trying to bring comfort to Ukitake's badly damaged mind.

It was several minutes before Ukitake calmed sufficiently to speak. "It's so hard to hear," he said. "So hard." He ran his hand over the hilt of his sword and murmured, "What do you want? Why won't you help?"

At a loss, he looked up at George, making eye contact with her for the first time. A trace of blood was still on his lips, and he was pale and bedraggled, with dark circles under his eyes. "Sogyo no Kotowari refused me. I don't know what to do."

Maybe George was yelling too much. Well she'd try and cut back on that then. She didn't know what exactly was going on, though she got the gist of it. The sword refused to help? Though that sounded insane. But she'd gotten over insane a long time ago. She'd been just about ready to just sit down and wait for him to stop talking to the sword when he actually looked at her.

"I know, I'm sorry." She was much quieter this time. "You just need to get your strength back. You're running on empty." Plus, the disease he had well, she doubted that was helping any. He looked tired. "Let me help you get inside okay?"

He nodded weakly. After a momentary hesitation, he sheathed his sword and reached up, allowing George to help him find his feet. He was a good deal taller than her, but not at all heavy in spite of it. His illness robbed him of much of his energy, preventing him from gaining much weight no matter how healthy his appetite.

"Home," he whispered. "We want to go home." He didn't mean to the apartment he shared with Tessa. Ukitake, what little of him was capable of remembering, wanted to return to the comfort of Soul Society. He wanted Shunsui and Retsu nearby, and the comforting strength of Genryusai-sensei. He wanted his brothers and sisters and the peace of their ancestral home with its glistening ponds and wide, peaceful gardens.

George had lots and lots of experience picking Mason up and walking him home when he was totally plastered. And Mason was much taller than her, so this wasn't anything new. Once she got up him to his feet, she kept his arm around her so that she could help him get inside somewhere. Probably home, since that's where he wanted to go. Though he didn't say home-home, George kind of got that.

"Yeah I know, we all want to go home," she murmured. Of course she wanted to go home. She'd still be dead, but at least she'd have friends there. People who actually cared, even if they didn't at the same time. It was better than being stuck here. Not that she was ever good at making friends. Slowly she started to walk Ukitake towards the apartments.
