Entry tags:merlin, regulus black

Who: Regulus and Merlin
What: Commiserating together over their dreadful situations
When: Earlier today
Where: Merlin’s magic shop
Rating/Warnings: Start low, they are just talking for now.
Status: In progress, closed

For the fourth time in while focusing on restocking this particular shelf Regulus dropped another deck of cards. He reached down to retrieve it and his fingers, from lack of peace, sleep and food these last two weeks failed to grip the thing properly and he had to try again. The second time he was able to bring the thing back up to the hook where he placed the item. He paused then to pinch and the bridge of his nose between his eyes in an effort to relieve some of the pressure that had taken residency in multiple areas of his skull.

That was the last deck and he returned to the box to pull out the next item.

“Any more boxes of this that need to go out?” he called back to Merlin. They didn’t talk much about what was going on these last two weeks, most particularly the last week, or how they were dealing with being ‘fathers’ to children (teenager in the case of James). They both understood the other was having a difficult time of it, and they’d simply fallen into a routine of trying to stay at work as long as possible.

Merlin hadn't minded this whole marriage situation at the start. Molly and James had been great. He'd enjoyed spending time with them so long as James and Regulus weren't arguing. Even now his new 'wife' was nice. It was just more then a little awkward being with Mordred. They were civil for Morgana's sake. Merlin was naturally pretty talkative though, so it was strange for him to sit through all their meals silently, and trying to find reasons to stay longer at work was getting a little more difficult.

"No, but there are some new books that need to be put out." Merlin said, wandering out from the back with a box in his arms. It would be quicker and easier with magic, but that would defeat the purpose. On the upside? The store had never been better run and stocked.

Regulus nodded and headed into the back room to grab the box of books. He didn't use magic, not because it would be too efficient, but because he didn't have any magical abilities, though he probably would have refrained from using it just to make the work last. He found the books readily and returned to the front to stock them on the shelves.

He started thumbing through one, just to make things drag more. It wasn't all that captivating for him, the history of the street magician and his supposed impact on culture. But anything to kill time.

"How are..." he started to ask but the question faded on his first attempt, simply because his mind had difficulty staying focused. He tried again, "With Mordred... how are things?"

"Not terrible. We don't talk much, or at all...It suits us both well enough." He shrugged slightly. Things with Mordred weren't as awful as he expected. Regulus had a harder time of all of it then he did, for more reasons then one it seemed like.

"How are you?" Merlin asked cautiously, a simple enough question that Regulus could brush off if he wanted to. He knew the other didn't always like to talk about what was bothering him, and Merlin didn't always push. He stood beside Reg, helping put the books away.

"I wish Potter would do the same," Regulus said, and then rushed to clarify, "the not talking. He thinks he's taking the moral high road by chiding me for not acting like him." That conversation he'd had with James still rankled. Regulus just wished he would leave him alone.

"I haven't hurt anyone, if that counts for something." It was a poor line of high achievement. Those that knew of his time at the Clinic, however, would get the hidden reference to himself, 'anyone' was all inclusive. And him not harming himself was a high achievement.

"It counts for something." He nodded slightly, and offered a bit of a smile. Merlin would've liked to offer more advice as far as James was concerned, but he was beginning to learn his lesson as far as they were all concerned. Keep out of it. He could be friends with both of them, but that would require not taking sides or attempting advice that nearly always backfired.

"It has to be over soon. These things never last very long. Molly is great too, and a really good cook." Pointing out good things seemed like a better choice then lingering on the topic of James.
