Lily woke a little later than she probably should have and was willing to blame last night for it. It had been hard, learning so much about her future in the space of time it took to read a page in a book. She had found out more than she would have liked to, but she guessed it would have happened one day. She wasn't too sure just what to do with the rest of her day, however, and after showering and getting dressed she sat and stared at the book she had left on the floor yesterday.

No, she couldn't go back to that. Not alone.

She had wanted to see Sirius. Well now would be a good time. She knew he worked most days, and after realising the time, thought perhaps lunch would be nice. Finding a plastic box, she started to make up various foods and put in packets of whatever she could find that wouldn't result in Donna yelling at her for draining the resources they had. Placing that along with a bottle some fizzy type drink into her bag, she lifted it before heading out.

It didn't take long for her to reach where Sirius worked, but it was a different matter trying to find exactly where he was. After a few minutes of searching she saw him through an open door into a seperate part of the garage. She was about to knock, but decided giving him a fright if she could would be much more fun. So she brought her wand from it's place in her bag and made the tools sitting next to him fly. Grinning after a moment, she let them fall with a clatter.

"I have a delivery for Sirius Black."

She laughed at his reaction, leaning against the wall of the garage as she watched him. Okay, so maybe she shouldn't use his pain for her own amusement but it was such a habit now for both of them it didn't seem as cruel as others may think it is. Putting on a fake look of shock, she put her hand to her heart.

"I am shocked you would even think that, my dear Black."

She rolled her eyes as he ran the oil over his jeans but instead of flicking her wand to clear it up she simply put it back into her bag. She noticed him looking behind her and she was almost tempted to check what he was looking at, but kept her eyes on him. For some reason she felt slightly embarrassed about why she'd come even if she shouldn't. Shaking the strap of her bag, she gave him a slightly shy smile.

"I brought lunch. Thought you must be due a break soon."

Sirius raised his eyebrows. Lily had, unknown to her, provided him with food more times than it was possible to count. He had more or less lived in Godrics Hollow, after all. Still, she wasn't to know that. He wondered if he'd ever stop feeling a little surprised with how young she looked when she turned up. He still expected to see the young woman who'd just hit her twenties, with a baby curled against her chest, an exasperated smile and eyes a bit too old for her face. After all, the war had changed them all. Perhaps it was better to see her like this.

"You're my hero," he told her, with a wink. "Hang on." Sirius strode to the back, pulling his jacket down and doing a quick check of his pockets. Sure enough, his wand, PDA and cigarettes were right where he'd left them, and the animagus shrugged the garment on before loping casually back to the front of the space. As he approached, he offered Lily a typical heart-melting smile, before hooking a finger over the edge of the bag to peer in.

"Ooooh! Sandwiches. You spoil me, Evans." He lifted his dark eyes to meet her green, his face just a little too close. Then he gave a bark of laughter and stepped smartly back, jerking her head so she'd walk with him. "What have I done to deserve your culinary talents?"

Lily smiled a little, looking to her feet as he got his things together. She was glad he didn't seem too focused on teasing her about her coming to give him lunch, she would probably tell him to forget it if he did. She let him look in the bag, but with forced annoyance. She went to bat his hand away, partially out of playfulness, when his face was right in front of hers. She could almost sense his laugh before it came, and luckily wasn't startled.

"I was bored, figured I might as well do some charity work with my time," she said with a shrug as she started to walk.

She was lonely, that was the honest answer. And after James staying with her as long as he could, until it became impossible because of what this stupid place was doing, she really didn't want to bother him again now. Or give him the wrong impression.

Well the right one, but she wasn't too sure about that yet.

Sirius took a sharp intake of breath where he was striding along beside her, having to slow his paces to stop his long legs carrying him off without his redheaded companion. He'd grown a lot since sixteen, after all, and Lily had always been on the shorter side of normal. The wizard gaped at her with feigned offence. "Charity? Excuuuuuse me, Head Girl. Who's the one with the job here? You wound me."

He spun around, walking backwards in front of her with one hand spread over his apparently broken heart. Of course, this action meant he had no idea where he was going, and several people had to throw themselves out of the way to avoid being trampled under Sirius' combat boots. In the meantime, Sirius gave Lily his best puppy dog eyes, then allowed one arched eyebrow to raise.

"Isn't this a bit weird for you?" He asked, still not bothering to turn around, keeping his gaze focused entirely on the teenager. "I mean... to you, it was only a week ago that you were telling me to jump in the lake." They were walking in the direction of the park, although Sirius couldn't remember anyone deciding that was where they were going. But, true to form, he went with the flow. In fact, his face and voice became a bit less light-hearted with his next question, his dark stare becoming that little bit more intense.

"How are you?" He didn't think he needed to point out that he was referring to her revelation the night before.

"Head Girl?" She ignored the rest of his sentence and focused on that. She was going to be Head Girl? It was something she had hoped would happened when she reached her seventh year, but she didn't anticipate it being a definite. But then he was walking backwards with a look that didn't really work on her. Well much. But when other people started having to make sure they didn't want to him, she quickly snapped at him, "Sirius, stop it!"

His question was valid, an to be honest she wasn't sure how she had managed to talk civilly to him never mind spend a lunch with him. The same could be said about the amount of time she was spending with James. At the end of the day she could only really put it down to one thing, or at least one thing she would admit to.

"Desperate times and all that. Tough situations, strange situations means trying to find ways to keep yourself from going into seclusion. At least with you lot I have no chance."

It was completely true. She felt more grounded with him and James and Sirius. More welcome, no matter the teasing and the fact that before she came here she hated them. Well she didn't hate them, she just didn't like the way they acted. When his gaze became more serious, she found herself wanting to drop her own. It was only a matter of time until that would be brought up and in a way it was what she had wanted.

"I'm fine."

"Head girl," Sirius confirmed, then shot her a grin and stubbornly kept right on with his backwards walking. Because Lily might say this was only because of desperate times and measures and all kinds of things like that, but Sirius knew she liked him. Or she would eventually. Lily Evans might have been a tougher nut to crack than most of the student population, but he and James had won her over in the end.

"Liar," Sirius shot back, finally turning so he was walking beside her like a normal human being. "No' one would be alright after reading that. I pretty much vanished for a week when I got told. So come on, Evans." He reached out, punching her lightly on the arm. "Spill it."

At that moment, the gate of the park came into view. Sirius grabbed the strap of Lily's bag and used it to drag her rather inelegantly over the road during a break in traffic. Sometimes he forgot he wasn't supposed to treat Lily like she was one of his male friends.

She rolled her eyes when he refused to turn around but eventually he gave up. Good, it made it easier for her to avoid his gaze this way. He was right, she wasn't alright and doubted she would be completely fine for a while. Your death being sooner than you would like it isn't something you can forget.

"Sirius!" she whined slightly when he punched her. But before she could punch back or even attempt to tell him how she was feeling, she was being dragged by the bag across the road. Thankfully they managed to make it across alive but then she was shoving Sirius. "Don't do that you prat."

Sirius grinned as she shoved him, shaking the contact off before turning to stroll into the park. He'd been here plenty of times before, had babysat Phil and Mordred on the playground plenty of times. Not to mention all the times he'd had breakfast on a bench with someone or come to hit on joggers or just for a quiet smoke. Several time he'd chased cats up trees - Lily didn't know about that aspect of him and James yet, he realized. Or about Remus and his little problem (ex-problem.). He'd have to talk to the other two about that.

"Okay," he found a decent patch of grass, pulling off his jacket without thinking and splaying it on the ground for Lily to sit on. Sirius settled down beside the spot, holding his hand out to take the bag and - more importantly - his lunch. "Tell me about how understandably shit you're feeling."

She watched as he sat on his jacket, rolling her eyes when he reachd out for the bag. Taking her wand from it, she chucked it down to him before sitting beside him, crossing her legs as she looked around the park. It was realtively quiet, but not so quiet that they were alone. She didn't really want to go into detail about how bad she was feeling at the moment, after all it wasn't the easiest thing to admit to. Even if Sirius knew and understood why she was upset.

"I feel shit. There."

She didn't want to talk about it but did. It was confusing. She had never said anything of great importance to Sirius in her life, nothing that upset her or showed any emotion other than her dislike of him.

Sirius pulled a plastic box from the bag and placed it between them, prising the lid open and pushing it towards Lily so she could have first choice from the food she'd packed away. In the meantime, he shivered, pulling one knee up to his chest and slipping his hands into his pockets. He nodded, keeping silent for a rare moment before he realized she wasn't about to say anything more.

"There was an older version of Remus here before," he told her, watching her select and sandwich before reaching to take one himself. "He told me about everything, then I vanished for a week. So you're doing a hell of a lot better than I am. I'm kind of assuming you haven't punched a hole in a wall or tried to destroy your liver." He shrugged, absently devouring a sandwich in two bites.

Her eyes fell to the box as he pushed it to her, picking up the first thing she touched. She liked everything she brought anyway, so didn't mind. Taking a small bite, it was only then she realised that she had taken a piece of cut up cheese sandwich. Sirius seemed to not care about eating slowly and the one he picked was soon gone. Though she was blaming what she had in her mind at the moment.

"No I haven't. Though I've felt like it."

She really had felt like hexing things at time. Some things were awful to think about but she was determined to pick herself up. She was strong and she knew that she could manage to work through this.

Sirius nodded again, running the back of his hand over his mouth. The other hand was still in his pocket, and he turned a box of cigarettes over absently between his fingers. But he knew Lily didn't like it, so he held off lighting up until she left him back at the garage. He'd been meaning to quit before he came here, mainly because of Lily's insistance that nothing resembling smoke come anywhere near her son - something Sirius understood completely. Only since arriving in Colligo that idea had gone off the boil a little.

"I'm sorry," he said again, a little awkwardly. It was odd, really, how Sirius found it almost impossible to apologize to anyone who wasn't James, Lily, Harry or Remus. But when it came to those four he felt like he had to do it all the time. "I wish I could do something... I just... I dunno. Do you want to ask me anything? About this place or... what happens? I mean... I only have what I remember from the other me." And he was halfway insane, he thought, but didn't say.

After all, as far as he knew, James and Lily didn't know about Azkaban, and he wanted to keep it that way for as long as possible. It wasn't a topic he wanted to talk about, because when he did he heard a buzzing in his head and it hurt.

"I...I don't know. Part of me wants to know everything, but then I worry if I will just regret it after."

She sighed softly, eyes falling on the bread in her hand but not lifting it to take another bite. Her appetite wasn't as strong anymore now that she was thinking about the situation she had found herself in. She had her future in front of her, the ability to know anything he knew that would happen for her in the short time she had left alive. That in itself was something hard to come to terms with. She would die soon.

"What would you do if you were in my situation? Would you want to know?"

Not that she would do as he said, she just wanted another opinion. She knew the books were bound to tell her things but there was something about hearing it from Sirius that made it more believable. Not that she would tell him she relied on him for the truth for once.

Sirius quirked an eyebrow. "You're not really giving me a lot to work with here, Lils." He reached forward, grabbing another sandwich and shoving it into his mouth whole.

"Well, I know what happens to me." Sirius' knee twitched a little, and he shifted, avoiding Lily's gaze. He didn't know how much she knew about him, and really didn't want to be made to talk about it. So he skimmed over it, and inwardly prayed she wouldn't question it. Of course, she'd hear about Azkaban eventually. But he was quite up for putting that day off.

Sirius reached for the bag, searching through it for something to drink, managing to avoid her gaze as he spoke. "But other people know what happens to you, so you're bound to hear it sooner or later. Even if you don't want to. It's just... I dunno, Lils. It's your choice."

She watched him for a second before looking out to her surroundings. She was going to find out eventually and, as he said, it could be from someone she doesn't know. Some people know her future and would just say it all without care. She had experienced that before. Wouldn't it be better to hear from someone she trusted even if she wouldn't admit that she did. Sighing softly, she looked back to him.

"Tell me. Everything."

She was giong to hear it anyway as she listened to the books with James like they had decided, but she wanted to know.

Oh, fantastic. Sirius sighed, located a bottle of water and spent a moment pulling his wand out and transfiguring it into a thermus of tea. For a moment he was quiet, unnaturally so for him, pouring a portion of the steaming drink into the mug that doubled as a lid and passing it over to Lily. He took a healthy swig himself from the thermus itself. It was a little watery - James had always been best at transfiguration - but otherwise good.

"You and James started going out in seventh year. We all graduated, and joined the Order of the Pheonix together pretty much straight away. We were fighting the Death Eaters with Dumbledore. Things... they got really bad. People were dying or vanishing every other day. Our friends, people we went to Hogwarts with. Marlene and Dorcas and... everyone. But we fought a lot of battles and everything was just..." He hesitated. "We weren't winning. They were getting rally popwerful, took over the ministry. But you and James got married, and you had Harry and made me Godfather. You were so happy together, even with everything going to shit. It was a bit sickening. But we used to hang out at your house all the time and it... it was pretty great. I mean, it was the closest thing to a normal family I've ever had. Harry was only about five weeks when I was brought here."

"Then there was a prophecy - I didn't know the details, but Voldemort was after Harry. So you go into hiding for a long time. In the end we decide to use the fidelius charm to keep you all safe. And we told everyone I would be secret keeper." Sirius glanced up at Lily for the first time since he started the story. "James is the best friend I've ever had. I love you both and everyone would assume I was going to be the one picked. But at the last minute we switched to Pete. We don't tell anyone. Not Dumbledore or Remus. No' one. Because that way they'd keep thinking it was me and Pete would be able to keep you safe. I fucked up, Lils. It was my idea to use a bluff." Sirius voice was suddenly a little hoarse. He hated telling this story, hated thinking about it. "I fucked up so badly."

"He was a Death Eater. I don't know how long or why or whatever. But he told them where you are, and he finds you and comes to Godrics Hollow and..."

His voice caught a little, and Sirius took a huge gulp of tea to get rid of the lump that had swollen in his throat. "Because you died for Harry, you leave protection on him. In him. When Voldemort tried to kill him, the curse rebounded. It ripped him from his body and he was gone. Harry was left with just a scar. But he had to go to your sister because he needed the protection that came from your blood..."

Sirius looked up from his lap, seeking out Lily's gaze and trying to work out whether he could stop here.

She took the mug without a word, her eyes firmly on his as she waited. She was feeling nervous, more than nervous if she was honest. He didn't seem so sure about telling her what she wanted to know and she almost told him to forget it. But she was going to find out eventually. And why not hear when she had the support of someone she supposed was a friend.

The moment he mentioned James her eyes flickered to the floor. As much as she hated to admit it, she had found herself feeling a bit more attracted to him recently. Especially after last night when he came to comfort her. There was something so, and she couldn't believe she thought this way, but there was something so right about the way she fit in his arms. As if she was meant to be there.

She never would have thought Peter a death eater. She never spoke much to him, but she just assumed that was because of his quietness. She never pushed anything on him, never spoke to him if he did not seem willing to have a conversation. But to think that he was willing to, in a way, cause her murder. James' and the near death of her baby boy? She wouldn't have believed it.

She felt a little relief even if she hated the thought of her sister looking after her magical son. She knew from the book, if that was extremely accurate, that she didn't treat him well. And she wanted to hurt her so badly for doing so. But she was the only protection her baby had and if it kept him safe then she guessed it was the only thing to do. When Sirius stopped and looked at her, she didn't think before putting her mug down and wrapping her arms around him tightly.

"I know you're blaming yourself. I know you better than I probably should since I came here, and you shouldn't. You weren't to know."
