Who: Arthur and Merlin
What: Loitering around the clinic
When: Lots of times between late on the 1st and early on the 3rd
Where: The Clinic
Rating: Low

He'd only meant to leave a few minutes for ice and then return. Guinevere had been sweating fiercely now for a few hours, bed clothes sticking to her frame, and he didn't need to be told twice when she'd nearly shouted out his eardrum to get her something to cool her down. He kissed her sweaty forehead and went out to find someone to ask for ice.

Instead he wound up wandering in mindless circles, scared to go back into the room, which was how he happened upon Merlin.

Well.

Crashed into Merlin at any rate. And it was a spectacular feat of balance that neither of them toppled over.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Arthur bit out, before unscrewing the cap of his water and guzzling half of it in one blow. He wiped his mouth on his sleeve and lifted his gaze to Merlin's face.

Nerves were nothing new to him. They were normal. Annoyingly so. But this situation was anything but familiar. He bowed his head as he leaned against the wall beside Merlin.

"She's got hours to go."

Merlin just rolled his eyes, and didn't explain. Arthur was frazzled at the edges and it was understandable, just strange to see. The idea of him actually fainting though, Merlin couldn't help but snicker a little at the thought. He relaxed against the wall, amused at the idea, and watching people pass by absently.

"Just hours away from being a father then. I'll be a god-father soon." He grinned a little at the thought.

"Plenty of time to change our minds." Arthur gazed over at Merlin, lips twitching. "The Gwaine fellow you get along with would make a fine choice."

He dropped his gaze to the bottle in his hands. "Something could still go wrong."

"Nope. You already offered it to me, and I accepted. It's binding. No changing your mind allowed." He said with mock seriousness.

Merlin nudged his shoulder slightly and shook his head. "She will be fine. They both will." Merlin sounded like he was absolutely certain, and there was no way he could know for sure. None of them could deal with something else bad happening so soon.

"Binding, was it?" Arthur's wry tone was utterly wrecked by fondness and exhaustion and there wasn't much he could do to fix that now. He slouched and favored Merlin with a thin smile when he knocked into his shoulder but didn't respond. There wasn't much he could say to that. He spent too much time already mired under the 'what if's to continue on as he had been.

Either things went well or they didn't.

"Oh, absolutely." He nodded, pleased with the little smile he'd gotten in response. Eventually he straightened and motioned for Arthur to follow him. "Come on. We shouldn't keep Gwen waiting long."

The last thing they needed was an even more unhappy Gwen. She'd upset and stress herself, and in turn make Arthur even worse. The last thing they or the baby needed was more stress.

"She wanted ice," Arthur said, trailing after Merlin reluctantly. He rubbed the back of his head with his water bottle and sighed. "Could you do something about that?"

He nodded taking a detour down the halls to the cafeteria where he was able to get a cup full of ice. He got a cup of tea for Arthur too, trading him for the bottle of water. Arthur needed to relax one way or another, maybe tea would help. "Do you want anything else while we're down here? I know you haven't eaten since you left."

Arthur shook his head and took a steady sip of his tea, scalding the back of his mouth, but it served as something new to focus on.

"I'll eat when I'm hungry." Or when he was less certain he'd get sick on it. He was certain Merlin didn't need him to say it to understand.

"Thank you," he added, not yet long enough past for it to be an afterthought but more of a stumble in good manners. "You don't have to stay."

Though Arthur dearly wished he would.

Merlin just nodded and smiled at the the thank you. He did roll his eyes though when Arthur said he could leave, as if he had better things to be doing. He'd spent his time recklessly killing toclafane since Morgana died. He needed to stay here and take care of Arthur and Gwen so he didn't do something stupid like getting himself killed.

"I know." He kept on walking towards Gwen's room though. "But then who would look after you?"

Arthur kept his head down as he went by Merlin to conceal the smile that threatened to come out should he stay out there and listen to anymore of Merlin's ridiculous proclamations.
