Entry tags:arthur pendragon, merlin

who: AU!Merlin & Arthur
where: The park.
when: Sunday Afternoon
what: Old Merlin is bored and practicing embroidery. Arthur will likely come round and mock him.
status: closed, incomplete.

Merlin sat in the park enjoying his little break in Colligo. Better then the rain soaked camp he'd been tied up in before hand, but he supposed that's what he deserved for letting himself get kidnapped. It was a nice escape from the incredibly dull council meetings too. Who knew Kings had to put up with so much whining from every bitter and spoiled noble in the entire kingdom? It almost made him long for the days where they could just leave and go hunting. Almost.

At any rate, he was keeping busy here. He discovered he still had a job to do, running the little magic shop. He even found his old journal of tried magic, things he had attempted when he was younger, spells he'd shared with Morgana when they'd been fighting, silly enchantments that did absolutely nothing practical...That little book was flipped open beside him now, a pen going at it, taking notes as Merlin spoke. He'd help his younger self out. Enchantments to use on Sirius when they got back up to their pranks. Healing potions and salves he'd actually be able to manage since he was useless at healing magic. Other little things that entertained Merlin.

Of course, while the pen was taking notes for him, Merlin was also practicing his sewing. Yes, sewing - more like embroidery actually, since he could already manage a simple stitch. Gwen had been attempting to teach him back home because he was forever making a mess of his clothes, as was Arthur, with the trouble they still got up to on a regular basis. (Which he sort of resented, thank you. He was supposed to make Arthur king, and that should've ended the constant attack of monsters and sorcerers, right? Not really.) And he liked to be able to mend things himself. Court Sorcerer may entitle him to a servant, but he couldn't be bothered. Arthur never took another one, and Merlin had an apprentice who could manage little things for him. He was perfectly capable of mending his own clothes though thanks. Even if Arthur had complained for years that his stitches were always crooked. He was managing it quite well now actually. He could do fancy little stitches around the hems, and make tiny stitches that you could barely see. He had a red polo shirt in hand now, sewing Arthur's crest onto the breast pocket, and the gold threaded dragon didn't even look that bad. Gwen would be so proud. Of course, Arthur would mock them, the Queen and Sorcerer fussing over embroidery, but it was actually pleasant enough busy work when he wasn't stabbing himself with the needle.

If Arthur hadn't already been prepared for it, he would have walked right past the strange man mending a shirt sitting in the park. But he had been. He'd had nearly a full week to get used to the idea of Merlin being older and congenial, a marked improvement over the intense, arsonist sort he managed to replace. This didn't mean he anticipated stumbling across Merlin in the park pulling gold thread through the red shirt.

Embroidery.

Merlin turned into a girls blouse.

Arthur choked on laughter, letting Esme run free through the park as she was wont to do before coming to stand behind Merlin's bench.

"Impressive."

"I thought so." Merlin said, smiling down at his work without bothering to look over at Arthur. It wasn't hard to guess who it was after all. Instead he finished his last stitch, and then held up the shirt with the mostly finished dragon so the other could see. "It's your shirt, so you ought to like it."

Never mind that Arthur was laughing, and no doubt mocking him for taking up something so girlish as embroidery. He liked it though, and it helped. Sitting with Gwen in her little parlor, practicing stitches, it relaxed him. "How're you, Arthur?"

Merlin set his things down, folding closed his book, and turned on the bench to look up at Arthur. He was so young. It was strange. Merlin imagined he must seem like a completely different person to this Arthur; older, scarred, and not as scrawny as he once was. "Not quite the hound I'm used to seeing you with." He commented, looking to the small dog.

A grin split Arthur's face as he caught sight of the tiny dragon. Really, only Merlin. "I'm not sure I want to know how you get my clothing without me knowing."

He shook his head at his own stupidity and leaned against the back of the bench. This was going to be one of those divine moments where neither of them fought, or got awkward and Arthur was willing to milk that as long as he could.

"Tired. Guinevere is having troubles falling asleep." He sighed. "Esme is enough trouble on her own. We wouldn't have room for a bigger dog."

"I'm your servant. I can do many things without you knowing." He smirked a little, pleased that the dragon got a grin out of Arthur, and watched him relax against the bench. He could almost see the tension in his shoulders, the stress knot that was no doubt forming at the base of his neck. No wonder too, Gwen and the baby were the surest ways to worry the future king. He remembered that time here.

"Valerian root with warm milk and honey." Merlin suggested. "It should help her sleep."

Merlin laughed and looked again at the small dog then quirked a brow at Arthur. "Colligo is making you soft, Arthur. If that rat of a dog is too much for you." He teased.

"Valerian root." Arthur shot Merlin a disbelieving look. It wasn't that he hadn't heard of it before, obviously, he'd been around Gaius enough as a child to hear these things, but that didn't explain where Merlin thought he could get some here. Then Arthur would have to give Guinevere some excuse as to why he thought she should drink it, and knowing her mercurial moods and his own ability to cram his foot in his mouth at the worst possible moment, that could only end disastrously.

"Now, I never said she was too much." He shoved at Merlin's shoulder and laughed. "I have something to show you. I haven't even let Guinevere see it yet."

"They should sell it in shops here, and when you mix it with the milk and honey she should have no problem with it." He said once presented with the look of disbelief.

"Enough trouble, you said. Close enough." He chuckled and shoved right back, lifting the dog up into his lap to pet with one hand. "What's that?" He asked, leaning towards Arthur curiously to see what ever it was he was being shown.

"Maybe you should give it to her. She won't argue with you."

Arthur fished for his PDA from his pocket and poked it a few times until he got to the photos. He hadn't taken many since arriving. Perhaps no more than twenty in the year he'd been there. The last three were recent. The last one was what he dragged forward and showed to Merlin.

"I can bring some over tonight or tomorrow if you like." He shrugged, watching as Arthur fumbled around on the PDA, and eventually presented him with a picture. A warm smile pulled at his lips, looking from the photo to Arthur.

"She's adorable, and look at you. All proud." Merlin chuckled a little, and clapped a hand on Arthur shoulder. "You're a wonderful father, you know. Will be, rather. It's just a shame my younger self will replace me before I get to hold your little one." It was a little disappointing, but he knew his past self would be just as eager, and a good godfather. It would, no doubt, help him and Arthur get over the awkward patch they seemed to be in constantly too.

"How can you tell?" Arthur asked, his grin remained unsuppressed. He couldn't help it. Perhaps he was proud, despite having no immediate idea how he managed to raise Abigail so well. There was she. Gorgeous, kind, smart, his. He would never take it for granted. "I'm not even in it."
