Baku had been waiting for this opportunity for some time now. He'd been teaching the lieutenant's future self how to perfect his illusions, and he'd been gradually winning over the lady of labyrinths, but to catch them both at once? That was an opportunity he couldn't resist. He didn't tell them what he was planning--no. He wove his web of un-reality around them after they had dozed off, and waited for them to 'awake' in his world.

He was excited--perhaps even capriciously so--to see how long it would take them to realize that they were in still a dream.

He had a gun in his hands without even thinking about it, aimed right between the fox's eyes. There was intelligence there, and not the simple sort of animal cunning he'd seen in foxes in Reality. He couldn't remember anything about animals in dreams, not yet, but he was pretty certain this wasn't usual. The ruby on the collar didn't exactly reassure him either.

"Do I know you?"

Ariadne didn't need to check her totem. The fox was an obvious tipoff, and she closed her eyes when Eames brought out the gun.

"Oh my god. please don't shoot him, I think that would be a really bad idea." She opened her eyes and stepped over, leaning forward. "Are you going to stay like that?"

The dream eater dropped his vulpine jaw, licking his muzzle as he dropped his eyelids to half-mast at Ariadne. If he'd been in human form, the expression might have looked vaguely flirtatious, like winking and blowing a kiss. "Not if you don't want me to, Ari-chan," he purred, in human speech.

Then he shook himself, and the fur melted away like water flowing over rocks as he shifted forms. Where just a moment ago there had been a fox, there now crouched a man in t-shirt and jeans, his dark hair highlighted to a foxy reddish-brown, wearing that same ruby pendant around his neck, and that same devilish smirk on his face.

"Do you recognize me now, Mr. Eames?"

"Fucking hell!" The gun vanished even as he put his hands up and clasped them together behind his head. Familiar tattoos that he'd yet to get flickered on and off on his arms, unnoticed by Eames as he scowled at Dream. "It's Lieutenant Eames," he snapped, as his clothes switched to his standard DPM gear "and I don't kno- ...you're the guy on the network. With the haiku. Baku, right?"

He reached down to get his cigarettes, then paused when he realised he wasn't wearing jeans and a tee-shirt any more, his momentary bad mood gone. "... well, this is interesting," he said as he checked his pockets for cigarettes. His totem, he was very glad to see, was still there.

Ariadne was torn between the desire to giggle and the desire to hide her face. Was the Dream Lord flirting with her? And was this the same thing that was affecting Eames and Phillipa and everyone else, or was it just a capricious whim for his own amusement?

"Also known as Morpheus. Who I presume has decided to pay us a personal visit." Her face brightened. "But I guess you can still Forge, Eames. That's good, right?"

Dream nodded, inclining his head in a partial bow. "Forgive me. Lieutenant." He shifted, and bowed to Ariadne as well. "That would be correct. I have acquired many names over the years. But I must say, the two of you are among the quickest learners I have had the privilege of bringing to the Dreaming."

"My teachers did tell me I was a quick study," he said, distracted as he went through the few memories of himself in his dream-life that he had managed to remember so far. There was stubble, a haircut that he wasn't overly fond of, a lot more muscle and shirts like the ones in his wardrobe. Oh, no. No, there was something fairly decent. A quick flash of wearing a rather nice suit in the back of a van, of all places, was all he needed to pick out the details. He had no idea why his memory was so clear on some things and yet managed to blur out almost an entire decade, but it was just one of those things.

He concentrated on this idea of older him, building it quickly in his mind, and then looked round for something reflective. The way the light was working, the kitchen window did a pretty good job of showing his older self, and then he looked up at the two of them as he turned into the Eames Ariadne clearly knew better. He grinned as he rolled his shoulders, and let ten years of smoking and, well, living, roughen up his voice when he spoke. "Technically, I did learn everything I know in one night, after all," he said, tugging at his sleeves and blinking when he saw the ruby cufflinks.

Oh, that was more familiar. Ariadne smiled slightly as he spoke. It wasn't Eames properly, she could see that; he was wearing the suit he'd put on to Forge as Browning during the Fischer job, and that was far more sober than anything he normally picked. And she wasn't sure if seeing him looking like himself again was better or worse. But if they were demonstrating what they could do...

Ariadne crossed the room and opened the door - not onto their sixth-floor hallway, but Paris. An imaginary landscape of the city, impossibly French and scenic with landmarks all jumbled together. She glanced at Eames and, with a smile, stepped through the doorway. A breeze lifted her hair.

In the distance, the Eiffel Tower slowly creaked, bent, and tied itself into a knot.

Again with the flattery? Dream smiled smugly at the ruby cuff-links, knowing full well where and when those had insinuated themselves into Mister Eames' wardrobe. But he just raised an appreciative eyebrow.

He laughed out loud when Ariadne led them out into a fictional Paris, and began showing off. "A lesser man might comment on what you just did to that great, phallic symbol," he mused, smirking at her. "But I suppose we're coming to the part where I teach you how to keep my projections from attacking you now, aren't we?" He gave them each a pointed look. "Or am I keeping your projections from attacking me?"

Eames looked up from the cuff-links to the ruby that Baku was wearing, then back to the cuff-links once more. He had no idea why he'd made those appear, but there they were. Huh. Obviously Dream was playing. He let himself de-age once more, although the suit and cuff-links stayed. The suit fitted him perfectly, even with the loss of muscle-mass, and the shirt darkened to a deep inky blue. Much better. And then he was laughing as Ariadne finally turned Monsieur Eiffel's tourist trap into a pretzel.

"If you're in charge of the dreamscape, why on earth would anything in the dreamscape attack you? I wouldn't have thought it would matter whose dream we were in," he wondered out loud, before walking out into the street and stopping dead in his tracks when he saw the front of a somehow-familiar warehouse.

"This is getting more than a tad annoying, really," he grumbled, and poked some more at his memory, hoping to jog more details out. He knew his future self would have been able to remember everything with ease, but he couldn't and this was just beyond frustrating now. He turned to face the other two so that he didn't have to look at the warehouse any more, automatically moving to stand at ease. "I'll learn whatever you want to teach me."

Ariadne felt confident enough to smirk back at Morpheus, pleased that he liked her trick enough to laugh. "Blame Eames. He's the one who kept suggesting it. What does that say about him?" She eyed the Forger as his appearance changed again into one that was almost too distracting.

And then they were standing in front of the warehouse where she'd learned to dream and build and met them all for the first time. A shiver passed over her and she folded her arms over her stomach, looking past Eames and his unnatural (to her) military posture. "Whose projections would they be? Are we in my dream, or Eames's, or yours? Or is that a stupid question?"

"Mine," Morpheus replied, "All dreams bow to me." Not bragging, simply stating the facts.

Okay, maybe he was bragging just a little. "If either of your projections to attack, well, they'll just have to answer to me. And if any of my creations step out of line...well, let's just say they know better."

"Like I thought, then," Eames replied with a small nod. He was well aware of how much he wanted to look back round at the warehouse, and initially it wasn't a problem. He was more than used to standing to attention, he could make himself not look round. But goddamnit, he knew he knew that place and he couldn't think why, and it was pissing him off.

"Baku... Morpheus... Which do you prefer? I'd like to ask a favour, if that's alright with you," he said, giving in to his irrational need to glance back at the front of the building when he finished speaking.

Dream just shrugged his shoulders. "You name me," he said, "I answer to whatever you prefer. That's just the way it works."

He let his gaze travel in the direction of the building that Eames was avoiding looking at. "Is there something in that warehouse you need to confront, Lieutenant?"

"I have no idea. I can't remember yet," he admitted, crossing his arms as he looked back round at Dream, "but that's what I'd like to ask you. Is there some way you can help me to remember? Or speed up my getting memories back? If you're used to training the other version of me, it must be incredibly frustrating for you to wait for me to even begin getting close to my previous skill level. I know it's pissing me off. So, yes. Is there any way you can help?"

Dream looked from the warehouse to the dreamer, folding his arms in kind. "Barring any subconscious blocks our captors may have set in place to keep me from accessing my full power, yes."

"I wouldn't be surprised if they had," Ariadne said, still looking at the warehouse. "I mean, otherwise you'd be able to leave, wouldn't you?" She stepped forward, placing a hand on the center of the door. "What do you think, Eames, did you put something important in here? It doesn't feel like it." And why did she say that? Maybe being here with Morpheus was increasing what she could do.

"Excellent. And now, would you help?" he asked Dream, after realising he'd phrased things slightly incorrectly.

When he looked back at the warehouse (and started thinking that his head should be put on a swivel), he frowned to see Ariadne so close to the doors. "What is here? Do you recognise it?" he asked, even as his Heckler & Koch reappeared in his hands. The whole place was familiar, he just didn't know why. Yet. That said, if they were going in, he was going to go first.

Walking up to Ariadne, he put a hand on her shoulder and motioned for her to move back a bit, then carefully opened the door and stepped inside. And then stopped.

Arthur was there, scowling at a laptop. And Ariadne, surrounded by models and drawings. A blond man who had a look of Phillipa about him (Cobb, his memory supplied) was reading over notes at a corner desk, and oh, bloody hell, that was Yusuf sitting beside his older self, who appeared to be hooked up to a PASIV. Nobody looked up as he started walking closer to them, which was quite odd. He was sure of that. He kept a hold of his gun for the time being, and made his way over to see what was pissing Arthur off so much.

"To the best of my abilities," Dream replied, adding to himself, which ought to be pretty damn good.

He followed the pair inside, keeping his eyes, ears, and various other senses alert. The sound of the PASIV machine whispered to him softly, almost mockingly as he and his companions halted in the doorway. He held his breath, nerves coiled for action, but none of the figures in the warehouse seemed to notice them.

Good. Perhaps it was best if they keep it that way, and remained unnoticed until they were ready to be noticed. For now, he would observe.

Ariadne's heart seemed to skip a beat as she walked in, but nobody inside moved. If they were projections, was that a projected PASIV? Would it work the same as the ones they had had to create the second and third levels - and to go into limbo?

She skirted around the edge of the warehouse, looking out the windows. They were showing the view that she remembered from Paris, which must have been Eames bleeding over. With a frown she shifted things again, watching her cartoon city reassert itself. The projection behind her glanced up, as if hearing her name spoken across the room, but went back to her drawings without further incident.

This was weird.
