WHO: George Kirk & Amanda Grayson
WHAT: Unexpected Arrivals
WHERE: Outside the Library
WHEN: Before this
RATING: PG
STATUS: In Progress

This...was a library. It wasn't often that a starship looked like a library unless one was in the library of a starship, but this was most definitely a library. She had to have ended up in the wrong place. Her eyes lifting to the empty spot where her son should have been standing, Amanda was more than certainly of it. She was in the wrong place. It was really such a shame that she didn't know what that place was other than a very immense library. But all answers come in time, and when one was deposited into the middle of an unfamiliar library by sheer dumb luck, one does not pass up the opportunity to peruse the reading material.

Amanda had to say that she was more than disappointed when each book that she opened was blank, "What's the use of a book without pictures or conversation?" Amanda recited, quietly amusing herself as she tried another. Still blank. What's the use of a library for blank books? the sound of melt on melt, however, distracted her from her attempt to read nothing. Eyes lifting from the blank pages, the line of animated suits of armor heading towards her provoked a soft, surprised noise.

Curiouser and curiouser. This place certainly seemed odd. How far off had the transporter beam thrown her? She couldn't recall any planets near Vulcan with this sort of life or technology.

As they closed the distance between them and her rather rapidly, snatching her by both arms, Amanda was taken off guard, a frustration building her gut, "Get your hands off of me, you melt monstrosities!" She growled, yelping as she met with the pavement outside the library face first soon after, something that looked similar to a comms device laid next to her before the knights retreated inside, closing the doors behind them. By then, she had flipped over onto her rear, glaring up at the doors with a huff.

"And stay there!"

"I've found," Amanda started, reaching out and taking his arm to guide him if the feeling that she was getting that he might not move otherwise was correct, "that when in an area that one has no prior knowledge of, the best way to deduce things about the place is to explore," She said, offering him the most patient and understanding look at that she could. Despite the youth in his appearance as a product of being pulled out of a prior point in time, by all right, they were the same age. Which meant that he was likely going to have things to adjust to, information to take in that he'd missed.

They might as well get the information about the place out of the way immediately.

"Doesn't appear as though the inhabitants are hostile," Amanda said, frowning slightly at their sheer obliviousness to what seemed to be going on around them. "So that least that should make it simpler."

The hand that took his arm helped to center him and he snapped out of his shock as he peered down at the woman with a somewhat sheepish look. She looked to be his age, or close enough, yet somehow he felt... younger. Far less mature than she was, and most definitely not as emotionally secure at the moment.

"They don't look like they've even noticed we're standing here," he muttered before heaving a soft sigh and clearing his throat as a young woman passed by. "Excuse me," he greeted her, faintly surprised when the stranger actually stopped and turned to face him.

"I'm afraid my companion and I are a bit lost. Do you happen to know the name of this place?" he asked politely. He refrained from identifying himself or Amanda, not wanting to mention things like starships, or actual names, until he knew a bit more about wherever they'd ended up. So instead he waited for an answer to his question as patiently as he could... which wasn't very, truth be told.

"Colligo," came the soft, somewhat airy response. "You are in Colligo."

George nodded, silently urging the stranger to say more. When she didn't, he pressed a bit further. "Do you have any-"

Before he could even get the question fully asked, she was interrupting. "That's for you to discover. Excuse me." And with that, she brushed past them and continued on her way down the street. George watched her go, torn between feeling annoyance and confusion, then looked back to Amanda with a shake of his head and soft sigh of frustration.

"They want to play a game, do they?" Amanda muttered, talking mostly to herself as she stared after the retreating resident. Clearly there was something to this that was not completely kosher with a response like that. Someone knew that they were here. Someone thought they were meant to be here. It was a shame that that simply wasn't the case.

"Well, then, we'd better start discovering," She said, reaching down and rolling up the waist of her robe so that the hemline wouldn't get in the way of her when she was walking before turning her attention out over the streets that she could see from where she was standing. "Earth style architecture. Late 20th, early 21st century. Natives appear to be unaware of their surroundings and are cryptic at best when addressed. The horizon line appears to show evidence of native vegetation similar to that found in forested areas of the Americas," Amanda said, listing out details with the detail and precision of a woman who had spent her maturing years among Vulcans. "Presence of technology capable of animating the suits of armor which served as our welcoming party yet to be seen."

Amanda turned back to George, the detachment in her voice fading into a near playful expression, "Apparently, we're going to have to do this the old fashioned way."

George blinked, glancing with mild surprise down at the wisp of a woman who was speaking as though she were giving some sort of tour, or possibly a lecture, on the area. He'd never heard someone describe something quite that way before. So very analytical and lacking any real feeling behind it. Or, at least, he'd never heard it described that way by a human.

He blinked again when her tone shifted, and his own lips parted into a relaxed semi-smile. "Well, they say that nothing worth doing comes easy. I guess we'll put that theory to the test," he remarked. Peering back around at their surroundings, part of him almost felt as though he needed to make his own observations about the place. Yet as he looked, all he could think was, Looks like Earth to me. It doesn't feel like it, though.

Somehow, George felt almost ridiculous just thinking such a thing, nevermind saying it out loud. So instead he nodded his head the direction that seemed to lead to a building that appeared to be filled with various shops. "Anyone showing up here like us will probably need supplies. I say we start there. Maybe we'll run into someone with some actual answers," he suggested.

Very logical. Her husband would have certainly approved of his manner of deduction especially given the rather stressful situation that he'd likely been extracted from and the even more confusing situation that they'd been dropped into. All the same, he was correct that they should probably start someplace that likely other people had gravitated towards.

"If not, at least we can find somewhere to settle in," Amanda said. She had no illusions about getting out of this situation quickly. No, they were likely going to have to fight if they were able to leave. They had been brought her for a reason. She had that suspicious from the answer that the resident had given. That is for you to discover. Nobody said something like that unless they were trying to be purposefully ominous.

Settling in. George knew that there was a much better chance they were going to have to do that rather than simply find a way out, but he didn't want to think about it. That would mean conceding defeat - even if just temporarily - and he wasn't the type to give up without one hell of a fight.

He didn't respond as such, though, instead preferring to let the conversation end with Amanda's wisely spoken words as he led them in the direction of the nearest set of shops. As they walked, he took note of their surroundings and committed as many little, seemingly innocuous, things to memory as he could. Everything from the clear lack of pollution in the air that should have existed if this were the time period on Earth it appeared to be, all the way to the type of clothing being worn by the locals as they passed, was filed away for him to examine later when he wasn't so frazzled and overwhelmed.

After a few seconds, however, George grew tired of the albeit companionable silence and glanced at the woman beside him. "So what is it that you do, Amanda?" he questioned in a polite, yet clearly curious, tone. There was a flash of humor in his blue eyes as he added, "Besides finding yourself in strange locations without any idea how you got there to begin with, of course."

"I used to be a teacher," Amanda said, returning the humor with a smile of her own. "But that's quite a few decades ago from where I'm standing even if it's only a few years from where you are," She said, chuckling. "Lately, I've simply found myself being an Ambassador's wife with all of the pride, privilege, and headaches that come along with it."

Adjusting the shawl about her shoulders, Amanda paused as they reached the first street and the line of stores just beyond it, taking in the layout with a quiet and discerning eye, "It's almost like an old style main street before urban sprawl took effect. Quite fascinating especially if you take into account the fact that the rest of this place appears to be built like a major metropolitan area."

The stall in her gait was only temporary, though, as she turned back to George, chuckling, "Does give it a more homey feel, though."

A teacher. That explained a little of what he was sensing from the woman. The ability to stay calm in such an unsettling situation. That was what teachers were expected to do, when they had children looking up to them, right? The next bit, however, had George questioning if maybe that was the reason that she was reacting so... decidedly odd from how he would expect most human women in this situation.

He didn't question which Ambassador. That seemed rude, somehow. Instead he just nodded and listened as she spoke some more about their surroundings. Whether it was intentional or not on her part, George had to admit that Amanda was doing a great deal to help keep him calm. Ironic, really, since that should have been his job as a Starfleet officer.

"That it does," he agreed with a smile. He took in their surroundings at that point, but didn't see anyone who looked as out of place as they were. Refusing to be daunted by a lack of luck on their first try, he smiled once more at Amanda. "Where would you like to venture first?"

"Do you see a grocery store down the line?" Amanda asked, pushing up on her tip-toes and extending her view as far down the street as she could manage. It seemed the most likely place to find other people. While recreations were nice and would most likely be necessary someplace like this, food was the one requirement. It was impossible to say exactly how the natives got nourishment, but she knew how she did. "Seems like the most likely place to find others, if there are any here."

Even if there were far more interesting buildings on the strip, they had set out for a purpose, after all. They could explore more once they found what they had started looking for. And then again, if they were the only ones here... Well, they could worry about what that might mean later.

"After you," She said, grinning back at him as she gestured towards the street.

Being taller, George had a somewhat better line of sight and put it to good use looking for what she'd asked. It made sense, he admitted, and had a feeling that there were very few times when the woman beside him didn't make sense more than likely.

"It looks like there's a grocery at the far end, that way," he commented, giving her another grin and shrug before heading in that direction. A few of the shops they passed manage to catch his eye - everything from trinkets that appeared to be straight out of the late twentieth century to clothing from a similar period, all the way down to a small pet menagerie with yipping puppies and purring kittens in cages lined in front of the store.

"Whatever this place is, it seems to want us to settle in for the long haul," George commented as he took his gaze from the pet shop back to Amanda. After all, a pet - if nothing else - was a pretty long-term commitment as far as he was concerned.
