who: arthur and merlin
what: making up?
when: that evening
where: arthur's room

Peanut butter and scraps of food he'd left Arthur before going into his impromptu retreat. That was all that was left of the food in Arthur's kitchen. The prince would never survive more then a few weeks if Merlin was sent back to Camelot before him. Never mind demons and sorcery threatening his life, it would be his own inability to take care of his own basic needs. Arthur could go out and kill his own meat, but when it came time to clean and cook it, and find some kind of vegetable to have with it he'd be totally useless.

Merlin sighed, setting the brown paper bags in either arm on the counter, and set to putting the food away. Much of it was food that Arthur could easily manage himself; apples, oranges, bananas, cereal, carrots, bread, sliced cold meats, and cheese. Then there were a few things that Merlin figured he would end up coming over to cook for the prince in the evenings. Assuming Gwen wasn't already tending to things like that for him, no doubt she was much better at it.

He glanced at the time, yawning briefly, and pulled out a large plastic container containing beef and vegetable soup he'd helped make at work to reheat on the stove. (It still amazed him, but now he was far too tired to be interested beyond not burning himself) He'd returned to work today early in the morning when he'd found the nightmares had stopped, he hadn't woken to things being magically altered around him on accident in his sleep, and with general control over his magic again. The overwhelming feeling of fear had some how lifted the night before.

Of course, that didn't mean he was in fantastic shape again. After weeks of nightmares, and the unwilling use of his magic several times a day -- then returning to work for a good portion of the day...The dark circles under his eyes served as some indication of how tired he was. Still, he needed to make it up to Arthur for what he'd put him through. Despite his promise, he had lied to him at the start out of fear of what Arthur would think of him if he couldn't control his magic. He'd hidden away, and refused to see him. They'd barely spoken in his time away, and when they did it wasn't the best of conversations -- they only further fueled Merlin's worries. As it was, he half expected Arthur to have been here, to be fed up with him, and slam the door in his face. Of course, now he'd discovered that instead the prince would have taken the food first -- then thrown him out.

Merlin had set dinner out on the table for Arthur, and had started cleaning up the room when he finally heard the door open, doing his best to seem as casual as possible.

"Do you listen to a thing I say?" Merlin closed his eyes for a moment, and breathed a small sigh. How many times would he have to reassure Arthur of his trust? For someone who had struggled to do something so small as call Merlin friend, and privately no less, between only the two of them. Merlin doubted Arthur had ever referred to him as such in conversation with anyone else...And yet, he felt entitled to all of Merlin's secrets, and was hurt when he discovered that Merlin kept some for himself. Usually out of the desire to live or protect Arthur himself, one might at.

"I trust you, Arthur. I trust you. I trust you with my life." Merlin started. "Need I say it again? I trust you." He lifted his head and looked at Arthur patiently, speaking in soft, calm tones that showed both how tired he was (enough to keep any frustration or annoyance that might have been in his tone otherwise) and was perhaps a little coddling.

"My worst fear was losing control of my magic and hurting you. I was afraid to let you see me like that. So I hid. It wasn't because I didn't trust you. I didn't trust myself not to hurt you is all." Merlin wasn't about to admit he had in fact jumped out the window to avoid Arthur when this began, but there it was. He also avoided mention of his constant nightmares during the whole ordeal, ones that he had on occasion regardless of so called demons to stir them from the place in the far back of his mind that Merlin tried to force them.

"Why do you care so much if I trust you or not anyways?" He ran an idle hand through his hair, and looked elsewhere -- anywhere but Arthur as he continued, particularly at the floor. "It's not as if you trust me. Sometimes I wonder if you care at all either way, and just keep me around to entertain you because I was so awful at being a servant, and one of the few people back home who would be honest with you when you were being a prat. And here...Well, I see to your food, and get your clothing washed, and beyond that -- we've done nothing but argue if we speak for too long."

"You really are a complete idiot. You ask if I listen to you, but do you ever bother to listen to me?" Arthur stood abruptly, chair skidding out backwards and toppling behind him as he began to pace in tight circles behind Merlin's chair.

"You say your worst fear is hurting me?" Arthur stopped pacing and gripped the back of Merlin's chair so tightly his knuckles bled white. "Have you stopped to consider, for even a moment, that you were not the only miserable person suffering from their own paranoia."

Merlin sat back against the chair, not bothered when he felt Arthur grip the frame near his shoulders, and just holding a steady gaze on the table in front of him.

"Forgive me. I'm sure it was just as awful for you, experiencing your worst fears. I am sorry I wasn't there to help." The words 'I can't protect you from everything' danced dangerously on the tip of his tongue, something between sincerity and bitter sarcasm, but he held it knowing that would only make things worse.

"Still, as hard as it may have been at least you were miserable and safe. Your worst fear wasn't causing things to explode around you at random, or burst into flame, or be thrown violently across the room." Let Arthur be upset with him, like it or not, Merlin had kept him away, and in doing so kept him safe.

Not yet. Arthur stood uncertainly, willing his arms still as he fought with the knowledge of what he experienced versus the truth of it. He had resisted searching for information that seemed readily available to everyone else in this city, information on them and their lives, for fear of what he'd find, but the insistent urge to seek out knowledge had been creeping along the edges of his mind since he'd awoken, frightened and filled with and undefinable amount of dread.

Merlin's fear had been physically manifested.

What did that mean about the rest of theirs.

"You're right. It didn't."

Arthur backed away from Merlin and slouched against the counter, staring but not apologizing.

Merlin finally stood to face Arthur again. Honestly, he did feel bad about not being able to assure him about his fears. Come to think of it, he wasn't even sure what they were. He hadn't asked. Not that he expected Arthur to tell him, but he supposed if ever there was a time to ask it was now.

"What was yours, Arthur?" Merlin moved to his side again and waited. He didn't expect any sort of apology, that hadn't even crossed his mind. That Arthur even said he'd been right was certainly enough. The question was would he trust Merlin with his fears? Would his pride let him say it to anyone.

It was exactly like magic. As soon as Arthur backed down Merlin came back to his side as close as possible without touching, invading without permission and expecting things to be easy. Arthur supposed, for Merlin, these sorts of things were.

The worst of it was Arthur had no excuse to withhold this from Merlin, of everyone. Gwen would be too mortified and Morgana, well, Arthur was worried enough about her sanity on a good day. Why weigh her down more?

Tilting his head back so he was staring up at the ceiling, he began to answer slowly, "The future."

He grimaced. "Do you still believe I'll be a good king, Merlin?"

"I know you will be a great king." There was no doubt. For all Arthur's faults, he cared about his people and was a good man at heart. Even if they couldn't get along all the time, Merlin didn't question that Arthur would be a good king in the future.

"I plan on being at your side then too, arguing with you about something new I'm sure." He teased. Merlin couldn't say he was surprised if that was the root of Arthur's fears, not being a good king. A lot was expected of him. Not that it would be difficult to be good when one had to follow Uther. Uther could make anyone look like a saint in comparison.

"Are you?" Arthur snorted, for once wishing Merlin could be absolutely certain of that. He swung his gaze around to Merlin and frowned, puzzled. "I'm not."

A bit cryptic, but if Merlin was being observant, he'd be able to pull the answer to his initial question out of that answer immediately without question. Merlin would not be there for the entire duration. At some point, Arthur's mercurial temper would send Merlin away, would drive them all away.

He bowed his head, unable to look at Merlin any longer.

Merlin stood looking more then a little puzzled for a long while. He's not? Not what? Planning on still having Merlin around to argue with? No more talk about his being a king, just that -- He couldn't be afraid that Merlin would leave...right? However, when the prince turned his gaze elsewhere, Merlin was more then a little shocked. The sorcerer did sometimes worry that Arthur would just replace him one of these days. He never imagined that the prince would be thinking something similar.

"I'm not going to leave, Arthur." He said softly. "You're stuck with me for good." They had their arguments, but they couldn't stay angry at each other for very long. Merlin had every intention of staying at Arthur's side for good, as a friend, an adviser, and to protect him.

Arthur's jaw twitched in response to that declaration. Why did he even want Merlin around that long? Merlin was absolutely hopeless and yet his betrayal stung the worst of all of them.

"And how, Merlin, can you be so certain of that? Can you tell me the future now as well as Morgana? Should we go and ask her?"

Though, that was probably unwise. If she did know, Arthur wanted no part of that knowledge. The little he had was enough to freeze the blood in his veins.

He thought that might have been Arthur's worry, but his responses kept telling him different things. Merlin thought he might want him around, maybe feared loosing him, then he went and said things like that.

"It's our destiny." Merlin smiled and shrugged. "I have to make sure you live long enough to be the great king I know you will be." The idea that it was destiny sounded ridiculous saying it out loud, but wasn't that what he kept being told?

"Royal prat or not -- you're my friend." He said it with the hope that maybe Arthur would say they were friends.

"Destiny?" Arthur mulled the word over and then dismissed it as folly and idiocy. Fate was not decided that way. They wouldn't be here otherwise. "And when that happens, will you stay?"

Because, as hard as it was to imagine being king, it was hard to deny he would one day be just that and have responsibility to the whole kingdom in a way he didn't quite yet have. In twenty years? Thirty years? When they were going grey and getting stuck in their ways would Merlin stay with him then?

"I know you are." Which, Arthur reflected was about as close to admitting to Merlin that he felt the same as he had ever got before.

"Of course." There was a certainty in it just as he had been sure that Arthur would be a great king. No question or doubt. It wasn't like he stayed with Arthur just because he was royal.

"When I was changed into that old man, you remember I still called myself your friend. I hadn't left at that age." He added reassuringly. The idea that he they would grow that old together was -- well, it made him feel better about these arguments they had. It helped assure him that they would get over it eventually at any rate.

Grimacing, Arthur drummed his fingers on the underside of the counter. He'd almost forgotten that, repressed it into the back of his mind. But he'd noticed that Merlin had been more comfortable then than Arthur could recall him ever being now.

Perpetually amused by everything.

"I'd forgotten."

Merlin was tired, and he was sick of this. Of dancing around the subject. Of never getting straight answers from Arthur. Not knowing how he felt about anything. Even when Merlin thought he understood the round about ways that Arthur expressed himself, Arthur did or said something that just threw him through a loop again.

"Arthur...You think of me as a friend, right?" He asked, staring so earnestly at Arthur that if he said no or avoided it he might crush every bit of hope Merlin had. "That's why -- I mean, all the questions about me taking off?"

Merlin had that expectant puppy look about him again, all wide-eyes and ears, waiting for Arthur to dole out a treat or punishment. And he almost always gave out the latter. It wasn't hard to understand why Merlin would leave him, even if he had been reassured by an older and odder-how on Earth did Merlin manage to get odder?-self at the beginning of their stay here.

The understanding wasn't enough for him. A hundred or more things could divide them.

He was doing a fair job of it now, wasn't he?

"Yes." Had he answered any softer or more reluctant he wouldn't have spoken at all.

Merlin seemed to start breathing again. There wasn't much more shown in the way of relief, but he kept smiling slightly all the same. After a minute he offered a whispered, "Thank you." Because that had really been all he needed to hear. For all their arguments, at least he knew Arthur did consider him a friend regardless to how they acted sometimes.

"I'm going to run you a bath, and get your bed ready..." Merlin commented absently, disappearing off into the other rooms. The sound of the bath started, and then continued -- and kept going. Some time had passed, and Merlin didn't come back out of the bath room. The water just kept running.

Merlin had turned on the hot water, sat down beside the bath, and put his head down for just a second. The room warmed up, his eyes closed long enough for him to finally drift to sleep.

Could Merlin be any more of a little girl? Arthur smiled, nearly against his own will, his lips stretching over his teeth. It hadn't been as painful to admit as it could have been. Relaxing inch by inch, he let Merlin go and do, whatever it was Merlin wished to do, listening to the sound of water being turned on.

After a minute or more without Merlin's return, or shout, Arthur pushed off the counter and crossed to the bathroom, peering into the room.

"Merlin," Arthur grumbled, snorting in exasperation as he reached for the tap over the top of Merlin's incredibly dense head and twisting it off. He sat on the edge of the tub, eying the water that threatened to spill over the curved ledge should anything disturb it further. Arthur cleared his throat, waiting.

Merlin didn't stir because of anything Arthur did. He probably would have slept there contently beside the bath had his arm not slipped a little, fingers lightly brushing over the surface of the water. The hot water made him flinch suddenly, and pull back -- rubbing his eyes and pulling himself to his feet as he started to call out.

"Arth -- Oh." He'd opened his eyes mid yell, and flushed a bright pink. "Er..your bath is ready." Merlin stated, hands clasped behind him, and slowly turning to leave the room.

Arthur bit his tongue to stifle his laughter and grabbed Merlin by the wrist as he went to leave. He couldn't quite keep his amusement in check. Squeezing Merlin's wrist lightly, he released him and shook his head.

Really, what would have happened had Arthur not come in and shut off the water? "Go and get some rest, Merlin, for God's sake, you look awful."

Merlin truly did too. It wasn't even a fabrication, or meant in mean spirits, for once.

Merlin paused and watched Arthur just restrain himself from laughing at him. Merlin's blush had spread from his cheeks to his ears, most of his face a bright red already, waiting for some smart ass remark.

"I'm fine." Merlin insisted, barely getting the words out before yawning. "I'll go get some sleep. Good night, Arthur."

Grinning to himself, Merlin headed out of the bathroom, glad that they'd set things right between them. Now he could really get some rest.

Arthur said nothing and waited for Merlin to stumble out of the bathroom before unstopping the drain and climbing to his feet. The amount of space between their rooms was exceedingly limited, less, in fact, then when they were home, but that didn't stop Arthur from following Merlin as stealthily as he could. To make sure he didn't trip over and invisible bump in the carpeting and break his too-thin neck.

The fact that it was a very real possibility was sad.

Hugging the open door, he leaned out into the hall, reassuring himself that Merlin would in fact make it into his own room before passing out again.

Merlin managed to get to his room just fine on his own, thank you very much. He didn't notice Arthur watching him, which was probably a good thing. Moving slowly, Merlin made his way to his apartment and disappeared. Off to bed, to get some real sleep.
