who: arthur and merlin
what: making up?
when: that evening
where: arthur's room

Peanut butter and scraps of food he'd left Arthur before going into his impromptu retreat. That was all that was left of the food in Arthur's kitchen. The prince would never survive more then a few weeks if Merlin was sent back to Camelot before him. Never mind demons and sorcery threatening his life, it would be his own inability to take care of his own basic needs. Arthur could go out and kill his own meat, but when it came time to clean and cook it, and find some kind of vegetable to have with it he'd be totally useless.

Merlin sighed, setting the brown paper bags in either arm on the counter, and set to putting the food away. Much of it was food that Arthur could easily manage himself; apples, oranges, bananas, cereal, carrots, bread, sliced cold meats, and cheese. Then there were a few things that Merlin figured he would end up coming over to cook for the prince in the evenings. Assuming Gwen wasn't already tending to things like that for him, no doubt she was much better at it.

He glanced at the time, yawning briefly, and pulled out a large plastic container containing beef and vegetable soup he'd helped make at work to reheat on the stove. (It still amazed him, but now he was far too tired to be interested beyond not burning himself) He'd returned to work today early in the morning when he'd found the nightmares had stopped, he hadn't woken to things being magically altered around him on accident in his sleep, and with general control over his magic again. The overwhelming feeling of fear had some how lifted the night before.

Of course, that didn't mean he was in fantastic shape again. After weeks of nightmares, and the unwilling use of his magic several times a day -- then returning to work for a good portion of the day...The dark circles under his eyes served as some indication of how tired he was. Still, he needed to make it up to Arthur for what he'd put him through. Despite his promise, he had lied to him at the start out of fear of what Arthur would think of him if he couldn't control his magic. He'd hidden away, and refused to see him. They'd barely spoken in his time away, and when they did it wasn't the best of conversations -- they only further fueled Merlin's worries. As it was, he half expected Arthur to have been here, to be fed up with him, and slam the door in his face. Of course, now he'd discovered that instead the prince would have taken the food first -- then thrown him out.

Merlin had set dinner out on the table for Arthur, and had started cleaning up the room when he finally heard the door open, doing his best to seem as casual as possible.

"Destiny?" Arthur mulled the word over and then dismissed it as folly and idiocy. Fate was not decided that way. They wouldn't be here otherwise. "And when that happens, will you stay?"

Because, as hard as it was to imagine being king, it was hard to deny he would one day be just that and have responsibility to the whole kingdom in a way he didn't quite yet have. In twenty years? Thirty years? When they were going grey and getting stuck in their ways would Merlin stay with him then?

"I know you are." Which, Arthur reflected was about as close to admitting to Merlin that he felt the same as he had ever got before.

"Of course." There was a certainty in it just as he had been sure that Arthur would be a great king. No question or doubt. It wasn't like he stayed with Arthur just because he was royal.

"When I was changed into that old man, you remember I still called myself your friend. I hadn't left at that age." He added reassuringly. The idea that he they would grow that old together was -- well, it made him feel better about these arguments they had. It helped assure him that they would get over it eventually at any rate.

Grimacing, Arthur drummed his fingers on the underside of the counter. He'd almost forgotten that, repressed it into the back of his mind. But he'd noticed that Merlin had been more comfortable then than Arthur could recall him ever being now.

Perpetually amused by everything.

"I'd forgotten."

Merlin was tired, and he was sick of this. Of dancing around the subject. Of never getting straight answers from Arthur. Not knowing how he felt about anything. Even when Merlin thought he understood the round about ways that Arthur expressed himself, Arthur did or said something that just threw him through a loop again.

"Arthur...You think of me as a friend, right?" He asked, staring so earnestly at Arthur that if he said no or avoided it he might crush every bit of hope Merlin had. "That's why -- I mean, all the questions about me taking off?"

Merlin had that expectant puppy look about him again, all wide-eyes and ears, waiting for Arthur to dole out a treat or punishment. And he almost always gave out the latter. It wasn't hard to understand why Merlin would leave him, even if he had been reassured by an older and odder-how on Earth did Merlin manage to get odder?-self at the beginning of their stay here.

The understanding wasn't enough for him. A hundred or more things could divide them.

He was doing a fair job of it now, wasn't he?

"Yes." Had he answered any softer or more reluctant he wouldn't have spoken at all.

Merlin seemed to start breathing again. There wasn't much more shown in the way of relief, but he kept smiling slightly all the same. After a minute he offered a whispered, "Thank you." Because that had really been all he needed to hear. For all their arguments, at least he knew Arthur did consider him a friend regardless to how they acted sometimes.

"I'm going to run you a bath, and get your bed ready..." Merlin commented absently, disappearing off into the other rooms. The sound of the bath started, and then continued -- and kept going. Some time had passed, and Merlin didn't come back out of the bath room. The water just kept running.

Merlin had turned on the hot water, sat down beside the bath, and put his head down for just a second. The room warmed up, his eyes closed long enough for him to finally drift to sleep.

Could Merlin be any more of a little girl? Arthur smiled, nearly against his own will, his lips stretching over his teeth. It hadn't been as painful to admit as it could have been. Relaxing inch by inch, he let Merlin go and do, whatever it was Merlin wished to do, listening to the sound of water being turned on.

After a minute or more without Merlin's return, or shout, Arthur pushed off the counter and crossed to the bathroom, peering into the room.

"Merlin," Arthur grumbled, snorting in exasperation as he reached for the tap over the top of Merlin's incredibly dense head and twisting it off. He sat on the edge of the tub, eying the water that threatened to spill over the curved ledge should anything disturb it further. Arthur cleared his throat, waiting.

Merlin didn't stir because of anything Arthur did. He probably would have slept there contently beside the bath had his arm not slipped a little, fingers lightly brushing over the surface of the water. The hot water made him flinch suddenly, and pull back -- rubbing his eyes and pulling himself to his feet as he started to call out.

"Arth -- Oh." He'd opened his eyes mid yell, and flushed a bright pink. "Er..your bath is ready." Merlin stated, hands clasped behind him, and slowly turning to leave the room.

Arthur bit his tongue to stifle his laughter and grabbed Merlin by the wrist as he went to leave. He couldn't quite keep his amusement in check. Squeezing Merlin's wrist lightly, he released him and shook his head.

Really, what would have happened had Arthur not come in and shut off the water? "Go and get some rest, Merlin, for God's sake, you look awful."

Merlin truly did too. It wasn't even a fabrication, or meant in mean spirits, for once.

Merlin paused and watched Arthur just restrain himself from laughing at him. Merlin's blush had spread from his cheeks to his ears, most of his face a bright red already, waiting for some smart ass remark.

"I'm fine." Merlin insisted, barely getting the words out before yawning. "I'll go get some sleep. Good night, Arthur."

Grinning to himself, Merlin headed out of the bathroom, glad that they'd set things right between them. Now he could really get some rest.

Arthur said nothing and waited for Merlin to stumble out of the bathroom before unstopping the drain and climbing to his feet. The amount of space between their rooms was exceedingly limited, less, in fact, then when they were home, but that didn't stop Arthur from following Merlin as stealthily as he could. To make sure he didn't trip over and invisible bump in the carpeting and break his too-thin neck.

The fact that it was a very real possibility was sad.

Hugging the open door, he leaned out into the hall, reassuring himself that Merlin would in fact make it into his own room before passing out again.

Merlin managed to get to his room just fine on his own, thank you very much. He didn't notice Arthur watching him, which was probably a good thing. Moving slowly, Merlin made his way to his apartment and disappeared. Off to bed, to get some real sleep.
